Chapter 6 - The Raid on Ward Tower

At 6:30 AM, the first rays of a cold, pale winter sun illuminated the gleaming sixty-story glass monolith of Ward Sovereign Tower on Wacker Drive in the heart of downtown Chicago.
The streets of the financial district were just beginning to stir with early morning commuters, coffee carts, and delivery trucks.
Then, the avenue was locked down.
Fourteen marked and unmarked tactical vehicles from the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, and the United States Marshals Service converged on the building's circular granite plaza in a coordinated, multi-directional sweep.
SCREEECH!
Armored tactical carriers blocked the subterranean executive parking garage, while forty federal agents in tactical windbreakers, badges displayed prominently, marched through the towering revolving brass doors of the main lobby.
Senior Building Security Director Harold Vance sprang from behind the marble concierge desk, reaching for his radio:
"What is the meaning of this?! This is private corporate property! You cannot bring armed agents into—"
Special Agent Marcus Cole stepped forward, flashing a crimson-stamped federal search-and-seizure warrant signed by Chief Judge Katherine Harris:
"Federal warrant for the entire premises, Vance. Clear the lobby, freeze all elevators, and step away from the security consoles. If anyone touches a master keyboard, they are going to federal prison for felony tampering."
On the fifty-eighth floor, inside the sprawling, three-story executive penthouse suite of Dominic Ward, six private corporate attorneys and senior accountants sat paralyzed in their leather armchairs.
The double mahogany doors were breached with concussive force.
Stepping into the penthouse, flanked by four armed federal investigators, was Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Lin.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Sarah Lin spoke, her clinical voice slicing through the room like an icy scalpel.
"Under Title 18 of the United States Code and the Emergency Asset Forfeiture Order issued at three-fifteen this morning, every server, every safe, every commercial ledger, and every private communication device belonging to Dominic Ward and Ward Sovereign Developments is now the property of the United States Government."
Forensic cyber agents immediately swarmed the executive desk, deploying hardware cloners across Dominic’s encrypted terminals.
In the corner of the office, behind a hand-carved mahogany bookcase, an agent signaled with an acoustic resonance detector:
"Agent Lin! We have a hollow bulkhead behind the credenza!"
Two agents pulled the heavy shelving away from the wall, revealing a state-of-the-art biometric titanium wall safe.
Special Agent Cole stepped forward, holding the cryptographic master decryption keys seized from Dominic’s person during his arrest in my driveway.
BEEP-BEEP-CLACK.
The four-inch-thick titanium door swung open on pressurized hydraulic hinges.
Inside the vault rested:
Three million dollars in untraceable, banded one-hundred-dollar bills;
Four forged diplomatic passports bearing Dominic Ward’s photograph under false aliases;
An unlisted satellite communication transceiver registered to the Gulf Cartel’s logistics network;
And a thick, red leather ledger stamped CONFIDENTIAL DISBURSEMENTS // CITY OF OAK RIDGE.
Sarah Lin opened the ledger with gloved fingers.
Under the bright office spotlights, the handwritten bribery manifests of Dominic Ward illuminated the room:
SERGEANT THOMAS MILLER: $15,000 / MONTH (NARCOTICS INTERDICTION ESCORT)
CHIEF ARTHUR HENDERSON: $40,000 / MONTH (SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS SUPPRESSION)
COUNCILMAN BRADLEY VANCE: $250,000 (WATERFRONT REZONING VOTE)
Sarah Lin let out a low, terrifying whistle of professional vindication.
"Dominic didn't just buy a local precinct, Marcus," Sarah Lin whispered, turning the pages of the ledger.
"He bought the entire municipal government."
Agent Cole pulled out his phone, dialing my private line at the Dirksen Courthouse:
"Judge Sterling," Cole reported, his voice vibrating with triumph.
"We have the ledger. We have the passports. We have the offshore routing keys. The entire Ward syndicate is dismantled."
Across the line, my voice replied with the calm, immovable finality of an ancient bell:
May you like
"Notify the press, Marcus.
Let the city see what happens when a monster meets the law."
