Chapter 4 - The Projection of Sins

The silence that clamped down on the grand ballroom was so dense, so terrifying, that the sound of a single dropped champagne flute in the back row echoed like a gunshot:
CRASH.
I wore an immaculate, custom-tailored charcoal three-piece suit that fit my broad, athletic frame with razor-sharp precision.
My dark hair was neatly cut; my posture was straight as forged titanium; my hazel eyes were calm, serene, and colder than the Arctic Ocean. The prison pallor was gone, replaced by a terrifying, sovereign stillness that radiated an aura of undisputed dominance.
Damienâs gold fountain pen slipped from his fingers, rolling across the eighty-five-million-dollar contract, leaving a dark, jagged smear of black ink across the signature line.
Vanessa froze on the dais.
Her face drained of every drop of blood in a fraction of a second, turning the shade of curdled milk. Her hands began to shake so violently that her champagne flute tilted, vintage Dom Pérignon splashing across the bodice of her four-thousand-dollar scarlet silk gown.
"D-Daniel...?" Damien croaked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic rasp that carried through the silent hall.
"Security!" Vanessa shrieked, her southern drawl instantly evaporating into shrill, feral panic.
She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at my chest:
"Security, remove this man! He is a convicted felon! He was released on parole this morning! He has an active restraining order prohibiting him from setting foot on this property!"
Four private security guards in black blazers rushed forward from the perimeter walls, their hands darting toward their concealed holstersâ
CLACK.
Senior Federal Marshal Cole stepped forward, flashing a crimson-stamped federal protective writ signed by United States District Judge Katherine Harris:
"Federal jurisdiction, gentlemen," Marshal Cole barked in a voice like grinding iron. "Take one step toward this man and you will be remanded into federal custody for obstruction of justice. Step back!"
The four private security guards froze, looked at the federal badges, and immediately stepped backward against the limestone walls, raising their hands in surrender.
I walked slowly down the center aisle of the ballroom, my hand-polished leather oxfords clicking against the marble floorboards with the rhythmic finality of an executioner stepping onto a scaffold.
The two hundred elite guests parted like the sea, backing into their banquet tables in stunned, breathless terror.
I stopped at the base of the raised mahogany dais, looking up at the stepmother who had worn my fatherâs silk robe and told me he died of a heart attack.
"You're having quite a celebration, Vanessa," I spoke.
My voice was not loud, but in the dead silence of the ballroom, it carried to every corner of the room:
"An eighty-five-million-dollar closing. A sixty-carat diamond necklace that belonged to my late mother. And a toast to the memory of the man you murdered in his bed."
A collective, unified gasp ripped through the two hundred guests.
Billionaire shipping directors gasped; municipal commissioners stepped back; and socialite wives covered their mouths in visceral horror.
"HOW DARE YOU!" Damien roared, lunging to the edge of the stage, his face contorting in manic, cornered fury.
"You're a disgraced thief! You stole four million dollars from our company! You broke my stepfather's heart, and now you come here with baseless, slanderous accusations to derail our closing! Officers, arrest him!"
"Let's talk about the four million dollars, Damien," Marcus Vance, Esq., spoke, stepping up beside me.
Marcus pulled a master cryptographic transceiver from his attache case, plugging it into the ballroomâs central audiovisual presentation console.
FLASH.
The massive, seventy-five-inch high-definition multimedia presentation screens mounted along the ballroom wallsâwhich had been displaying promotional slides of the shipping terminalsâflickered once, cutting off the corporate feed.
The screens illuminated in crystal-clear, uncompressed 4K forensic resolution.
The two hundred guests gasped in collective horror.
The screen displayed the unredacted digital audit from the night of my arrest:
On the left screen was the keystroke logger trace showing that the unauthorized wire transfers were authorized from the private IP address of Damienâs penthouse on 5th Avenue, using an administrative override script that Damien had purchased from an underground hacking syndicate in Romania.
On the right screen was the banking manifest showing that the four million dollars had been funneled directly into Blue Ridge Holdings LLCâwith Vanessa Hale listed as the sole authorized beneficiary.
"Thatâs an administrative forgery!" Vanessa screamed, her hands clawing at her emerald necklace, backing against the contract table. "Marcus Vance is his father's friend! They fabricated those slides!"
"Did we fabricate the poison, Vanessa?" I asked softly.
I reached into my breast pocket, pulled out the microcassette recorder from the crypt, and held it up to the stage microphone:
CLICK.
The sound of my fatherâs dying, rattling voice boomed through the ballroom sound system with terrifying, high-fidelity clarity:

"Daniel... if you are listening to this, then I am already gone... The tea started tasting like copper. They are poisoning me, Daniel. Arsenic and thallium, mixed into my daily blood pressure medication. Dr. Alistair Vance is falsifying the toxicology reports..."
The ballroom erupted into absolute, screaming pandemonium.
