Chapter 6 - The Interrogation of Dr. Alistair Vance

At 9:30 AM on Friday morning, inside the subterranean reinforced concrete interrogation suite of the New York County District Attorney’s Office in Lower Manhattan, forty-eight-year-old Dr. Alistair Vance sat slumped at a bolted stainless-steel table.

His four-thousand-dollar bespoke cashmere blazer, his gold Rolex, and his manufactured medical arrogance had been stripped away and cataloged into criminal evidence.

He wore an oversized, coarse orange institutional inmate jumpsuit that hung loosely over his shivering frame.

His styled hair had collapsed into an unwashed, greasy tangle; his manicured hands were rough and trembling; and his face was gaunt, sallow, and pale with terror.

Across the scratched metal table sat Senior Assistant District Attorney Sarah Lin and Federal Marshal Cole.

Between them rested three thick, red-tabbed evidence binders containing the complete forensic mass spectrometry analysis from Johns Hopkins, the recovered pharmacy ledgers from northern New Jersey, and the subpoenaed records from Dr. Vance’s unlisted Swiss bank accounts.

"Let's review the finalized state indictment, Dr. Vance," Prosecutor Lin began, her voice flat, clinical, and completely devoid of human warmth.

"On Thursday evening, your private defense counsel submitted an emergency bail petition claiming that you were an innocent attending physician who made an honest diagnostic error regarding Thomas Hale’s progressive heart failure."

Dr. Vance swallowed dryly, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate whine:

"I was! I swear on my Hippocratic Oath, Prosecutor Lin! Thomas Hale presented with atypical cardiovascular symptoms! The electrocardiograms showed severe myocardial strain! I had zero reason to suspect foul play! A physician cannot be held criminally liable for an unexpected cardiac arrest!"

Marshal Cole opened Binder Number Two, slamming an enlarged photographic print onto the metal table:

SLAP.

It was a screenshot of an encrypted wire transfer manifest from Blue Ridge Holdings LLC directly into Dr. Vance’s private shell corporation in Zurich, timestamped forty-eight hours before my father’s death:

REMITTER: VANESSA HALE (BLUE RIDGE HOLDINGS)

BENEFICIARY: ESCULAPIUS ASSET MANAGEMENT (ZURICH)

AMOUNT: SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS ($750,000.00)

MEMO: EXPEDITED POST-MORTEM CREMATION CLEARANCE

Dr. Vance’s breath seized in his throat.

His jaw dropped open, his skin turning an apocalyptic shade of wet dough. His hands began to shake so violently that his heavy steel handcuffs rattled loudly against the metal table ring:

"Who... who gave you those records...?" Vance whimpered, his eyes bulging in pure, unadulterated horror.

"The Swiss Federal Banking Commission complied with the mutual legal assistance treaty two hours after Vanessa Hale was processed into the county jail, Dr. Vance," Prosecutor Lin said coldly.

Lin pulled out a heavy, red-stamped true bill of indictment:

"Under Title 18 of the United States Code and Chapter 125 of the New York Penal Law, the grand jury has returned a twenty-eight-count indictment charging you with:

Deprivation of Life under Color of Medical Authority;

Falsification of Public Vital Statistics and Death Certificates;

Receiving Bribes to Conceal a Capital Felony;

And Aggravated Conspiracy to Commit First-Degree Murder."

Lin leaned in, her eyes boring into the weeping physician:

"The State of New York will be seeking a consecutive sentence of Thirty-Five Years at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, with zero eligibility for parole."

Dr. Vance broke completely.

He threw his cuffed hands against his face, letting out a ragged, ugly, sniveling sob that shook his entire frame:

"Thirty-five years...?! In Dannemora?! I will die in prison!" he wailed like a broken child.

"Call Daniel Hale! Tell Daniel I will testify against Vanessa and Damien! I have the audio recordings of Vanessa asking me how many milligrams of thallium it would take to induce fatal ventricular tachycardia without triggering standard hospital screens! I have the text messages from Damien ordering the cremation! Just don't let them send me to Dannemora!"

Prosecutor Lin stood up, closing her binder with a sharp, heavy CLACK.

"Daniel Hale was in the Surrogate’s Court sixty minutes ago, Dr. Vance," Lin said softly, looking down at him with unvarnished, absolute disgust.

"And his only message to this office was that justice should be executed to the fullest extent of the law."

Lin looked at the armed marshals standing by the door:

May you like

"Take this criminal back to his cell."

As the officers dragged the weeping, thrashing doctor down the subterranean concrete corridor toward darkness forever, the conspiracy that had poisoned my father was officially, permanently destroyed.
