Chapter 4 - The Bloodline Strain

The police sirens outside Riverside Hospital wailed into the night as Richard Vale was dragged away in handcuffs.
His desperate threats faded down the hallway, but there was no time to celebrate.
Lily was running out of time.
Inside the pediatric ICU, the red light above the door flashed continuously. The cardiac monitor’s alarm blared in sharp, terrifying spikes.
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP...
Dr. Marcus rushed out of the room, pulling off his gloves, his face grave.
“Her hemoglobin levels are plummeting,” Dr. Marcus said urgently. “The bone marrow suppression is advancing faster than expected. If we don't start the transfusion in the next hour, her organs will begin to shut down.”
Adrian didn't say a word. He immediately rolled up his sleeve and sat down on the nearest chair.
“Take whatever you need,” Adrian said, his voice deadly serious. “Every drop if necessary.”
I watched anxiously as the nurse inserted the large needle into Adrian’s arm. The dark red blood began flowing through the tube into the collection bag.
Adrian didn't even flinch. His eyes never left the small window where Lily lay motionless.
“She’s going to make it, Adrian,” I whispered, sitting beside him and gently placing my hand over his. “She’s a fighter. She survived on my porch in the dead of winter. She’ll survive this.”
Adrian turned to look at me. For the first time, the fierce anger in his eyes yielded to deep, overwhelming emotion.
“You raised her, Clara,” he said, his voice thick with gratitude. “While I was living in luxury, ignorant of the truth... you sacrificed your young adulthood to protect my child. You worked double shifts. You suffered under your toxic parents. How can I ever repay you?”
“You don't owe me anything,” I replied softly. “I love Lily with all my heart. She is my daughter.”
He squeezed my hand back tightly. “She’s our daughter now.”
Thirty minutes passed. The blood bag was filled, and the medical team rushed it into Lily’s room.
We stood by the glass, watching as the life-saving fluid began dripping into her tiny vein.
For a brief moment, a wave of relief washed over me. I thought the nightmare was finally over.
Then, the laboratory doors burst open.
A young technician ran toward us, clutching a paper report, her face completely pale.
“Dr. Marcus! We have a crisis with the donor match!” she yelled.
My blood turned to ice. “What do you mean? Adrian is her biological father!”
Dr. Marcus quickly grabbed the paper, scanning the lines of data. His brow furrowed in disbelief.
“Mr. Vale... your blood type is AB negative, which matches,” Dr. Marcus explained nervously. “But Lily has a rare genetic enzyme mutation—a blood protein anomaly. Your blood lacks this specific protein. If we complete this full transfusion, her immune system will violently reject it!”
Adrian stood up so fast his chair flipped backward.
“What are you saying?!” Adrian shouted, grabbing the doctor’s coat. “Is my blood going to kill her?!”
“It won't kill her immediately, but it won't cure her aplastic anemia either!” Dr. Marcus explained desperately. “She needs a donor who carries the exact same genetic protein anomaly! Statistically, that can only come from one person...”
I gasped, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.
“Nora,” I whispered.
“Her biological mother,” Dr. Marcus nodded grimly. “Only the biological mother’s blood carries the matching antibodies to save her life.”
Adrian stumbled back, clutching his head in pure agony.
“Where is she, Clara?!” Adrian turned to me, his eyes bloodshot, filled with wild panic. “Where is Nora?!”
“I don't know!” I cried, pulling out my phone. “She called me from an untraceable number! She was in a hospital somewhere—I heard a heart monitor in the background!”
Suddenly, the silent hallway echoed with the sharp sound of high heels clicking rapidly against the marble floor.
Eleanor, Adrian’s personal assistant, came running down the hall, holding an iPad.
“Mr. Vale! I traced the phone call Mrs. Bennett received!” Eleanor shouted, catching her breath.
Adrian grabbed Eleanor’s shoulders. “Where is she, Eleanor?! Speak!”
“She’s at St. Jude’s Hospice Care... fifty miles outside the city,” Eleanor revealed. “She’s listed under a fake name: Sarah Miller. Mr. Vale... her medical records show she’s in the end stages of lung failure. She’s on life support!”
Adrian didn't wait another second.
He looked at me, his jaw set in absolute determination.
“Stay with Lily, Clara. Keep her alive until I get back.”

“Adrian, it’s pouring rain outside! The roads are flooded!” I warned him.
“I don't care if I have to drive through hell itself,” Adrian spat, sprinting toward the exit doors. “I am bringing her mother home.”
