Chapter 6 - The Sacred Vow

The long, agonizing sound of the flatline shattered the room.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP—

“Clear!” Dr. Marcus yelled, slamming the defibrillator paddles onto Nora’s chest.

Her thin body jolted violently off the bed.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP—

“Again! Charge to 200! Clear!”

Thump.

Adrian slammed his shoulders against the door, trying to burst into the room, but two orderlies held him back.

“Nora! Don't you dare leave me!” Adrian screamed, tears pouring down his face. “You fought for ten years! Don't give up now! Please!”

Inside the glass room, something miraculous happened.

Right beside Nora’s bed, little Lily’s monitor was humming with a strong, rhythmic beat. On the gurney, Nora’s hand, resting limply on the sheet, gave a tiny, almost imperceptible twitch.

Beep...

A single spike appeared on the screen.

Beep... beep...

“We have a pulse!” a nurse shouted. “Blood pressure is returning! She’s stabilizing!”

Dr. Marcus wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and looked through the glass at Adrian, giving a short, tired nod.

Adrian collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the floor, shaking violently as he wept in pure relief.

I sat down on the cold tiles beside him, pulling him into a tight embrace. Two strangers bound together by a ten-year-old secret, now bound forever by the little girl sleeping peacefully in the next room.

By morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting golden rays across the hospital ward.

Lily’s blood test results came back normal. The aplastic anemia was in full remission. She was sitting up in bed, sipping orange juice through a straw, looking much healthier.

When Adrian and I walked into her room, she set her cup down. Her big brown eyes looked back and forth between us.

“Mom?” Lily asked gently, looking at me. “Who is this man? He’s been crying a lot.”

Adrian let out a breathless, half-sob laugh. He walked slowly to her bed and knelt beside her mattress, taking her small hand with trembling care.

“Lily...” I said softly, coming up on her other side. “Ten years ago, a very bad man separated you from your real daddy. But he never stopped loving you. He searched for you every single day.”

Lily looked at Adrian’s face, tracing the lines of exhaustion and tears around his eyes. Then, her eyes moved to the silver pendant around his neck—the twin to the one she had kept under her pillow her whole life.

“You... you have the other half,” Lily whispered, her voice trembling.

“I have the music, too,” Adrian said, pulling the faded handwritten notes from his pocket. “Your mother wrote it for you before you were born. And you played it perfectly last night, sweetie.”

Tears welled up in Lily’s eyes. She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around Adrian’s neck, burying her face into his expensive suit jacket.

Adrian wrapped his arms around her, holding his daughter for the first time in ten years, closing his eyes as if he were holding the most fragile treasure in the world.

“I’m here, baby,” Adrian sobbed silently. “Daddy’s here. I’m never leaving again.”

While they held each other, the door behind us creaked open.

A nurse pushed a wheelchair into the room. Sitting in it, hooked to a light oxygen tank but smiling through weak tears, was Nora.

Lily pulled back from Adrian, looking at the woman in the wheelchair.

“Is that... my mama?” Lily asked quietly.

Nora reached out her shaky arms. “My sweet little melody...”

The tearful reunion inside that hospital room felt like a sacred miracle. But outside those glass doors, the storm was far from over.

Suddenly, Eleanor stepped into the room, holding her tablet. Her face was grim.

“Mr. Vale,” Eleanor spoke quietly, trying not to interrupt the family. “We have a severe problem.”

Adrian stood up, adjusting his cuffs, his CEO persona instantly returning, sharp and protective. “What is it?”

“Your father’s lawyers just filed an emergency injunction in federal court,” Eleanor revealed. “They are claiming that because Richard Vale was the primary trustee of Vale Holdings, all personal assets—including your authority as CEO—are frozen pending a competence trial.”

“He’s using his legal team to trap us,” Adrian deduced, his eyes narrowing.

“It gets worse, sir,” Eleanor continued nervously. “Your father’s legal team has filed for temporary emergency custody of Lily.”

I snapped instantly. “WHAT?! On what grounds?!”

“On the grounds that Adrian is unmarried, Nora is medically incapacitated, and you, Clara, are an unrelated guardian with no legal biological tie,” Eleanor explained grimly. “They claim that as her biological grandfather with billions in trust, Richard Vale provides the most stable legal environment.”

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit.

They were going to use the law to steal my baby girl away.
