Chapter 12 - Richard Tries to Take Lily

Lily’s preschool called at 11:06 the following morning.

A man claiming to be Richard’s attorney had arrived with paperwork authorizing Lily’s release.

Maya was already moving before the teacher finished the sentence.

“Do not let anyone take her.”

“We won’t.”

“Lock the building.”

“Maya—”

“Please.”

Julian’s security team was closer.

Two officers arrived within seven minutes.

Maya arrived in twelve.

Richard was standing outside.

He wasn’t alone.

A private security driver waited beside a black SUV.

Richard held a folder.

When he saw Maya, he raised both hands.

“I’m her father.”

Maya walked toward him.

“You’re under supervised visitation.”

“I have new orders.”

Samuel grabbed the papers.

“They’re fake.”

Richard’s expression changed.

Police stepped closer.

“It’s a misunderstanding.”

Maya looked at the SUV.

On the back seat sat Lily’s purple travel backpack.

Her stuffed rabbit.

A jacket.

Snacks.

This was not a misunderstanding.

He had packed for her.

“Where were you taking my daughter?”

Richard scoffed.

“Our daughter.”

“Where?”

“You’re being dramatic.”

Maya walked to the SUV.

The driver tried to stop her.

Police intervened.

Inside the front compartment they found airline tickets.

JFK to Toronto.

Toronto to Lisbon.

Maya stopped breathing.

Departure: 2:35 p.m.

That day.

Richard tried to explain.

“A vacation.”

Samuel nearly laughed.

“You attempted to remove a child subject to a custody order using forged paperwork and international tickets.”

Richard turned toward Maya.

“This is because of you.”

Maya stared.

“You were taking her out of the country.”

“To protect her!”

“From what?”

“You!”

The words echoed across the sidewalk.

Parents had started watching.

Phones appeared.

Richard noticed.

His voice lowered.

“You’re destroying everything.”

“No.”

Maya stepped closer.

“You’re just finally being stopped.”

Police detained him.

The private driver agreed to cooperate almost immediately.

He had been paid in cash.

Richard had instructed him to avoid major bridges with traffic cameras on the way to JFK.

That detail transformed the custody dispute.

The district attorney became involved.

Richard’s supervised visitation was suspended.

His passport was surrendered.

Lily’s passport was recovered from the inside pocket of his coat.

When Maya finally entered the school, Lily ran toward her.

“Mommy!”

Maya dropped to her knees.

Lily hugged her.

“Daddy came.”

“I know.”

“He said we were going on an airplane.”

Maya closed her eyes.

“We’re not.”

“I told him I had school.”

Despite everything, Maya almost smiled.

“That’s my girl.”

That evening, Lily asked an unexpected question.

“Is Daddy bad?”

Maya sat beside her.

“No person is only one thing.”

“Then why did police take him?”

“Because Daddy made a dangerous choice.”

“Does he love me?”

Maya’s throat tightened.

“I think he does.”

That was the hardest truth.

Richard could love Lily and still be unsafe.

Love did not erase harm.

Richard had taught Maya that lesson.

She hoped Lily would learn it without paying the same price.

The next day, Vanessa contacted Samuel.

Her message contained only one sentence.

Richard is going to blame everything on me, and I have proof he planned this before the party.

Samuel arranged a meeting.

Vanessa arrived wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

Gone was the smug woman filming beside the cake.

She looked frightened.

Maya did not feel sorry for her.

“You recorded me.”

Vanessa removed the glasses.

“Yes.”

“You laughed.”

“Yes.”

“You slept with my husband.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

“Why should I help you?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because Richard told me your daughter was the insurance policy.”

Maya’s blood went cold.

“What does that mean?”

“He knew you might inherit something.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

Maya’s jaw tightened.

“He said if you ever found the money and tried to leave, Lily would keep you tied to him.”

Samuel activated a recorder.

“Continue.”

Vanessa opened her phone.

“I saved messages.”

Hundreds.

Richard discussing Maya.

Olivia.

The ring.

One message dated eighteen months earlier:

Mom says Maya still has the orchid. Once we know what it opens, we’re done pretending.

Another:

If she gets suspicious, remind her she can’t support Lily alone. She always folds when you mention custody.

Maya stopped reading.

Her vision narrowed.

Every threat had been calculated.

Every time Richard said she would lose Lily if she left.

Every time Olivia reminded her she had no money.

They were not casual cruelties.

They were a containment system.

Vanessa whispered,

“I didn’t know how bad it was.”

Maya looked at her.

“You knew enough.”

Vanessa cried.

Maya felt nothing.

Then Vanessa handed Samuel another phone.

“What is this?”

“Richard’s old phone.”

“How did you get it?”

“He gave it to me after upgrading.”

“Why keep it?”

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“Because I stopped trusting him months ago.”

Samuel connected it to a laptop.

Deleted messages began recovering.

One thread was with Olivia.

Most were ordinary.

Then they found a message sent two days before Lily’s birthday.

Olivia:

Make sure Maya breaks publicly. We need her unstable before custody becomes relevant.

Richard:

And if she doesn’t?

Olivia:

Then give her a reason.

Maya stared at the screen.

The birthday cake had not been a drunken outburst.

It had been preparation.

A manufactured public breakdown.

Except Maya had not broken.

She had picked up Lily.

Walked away.

May you like

And destroyed their entire plan with six words.

We’re leaving tonight.
