Chapter 18 - The Trial Everyone Was Watching

Richard’s custody hearing became a media event.

Maya hated that.

But sealing every element was impossible after the birthday video and criminal charges became public.

Reporters waited outside the courthouse.

Richard arrived through a side entrance.

He looked different.

No tailored arrogance.

No expensive watch.

Still, when he saw Maya across the courtroom, he smiled.

That smile reminded her of the birthday party.

He believed he could still control the narrative.

His attorney argued that Richard had made “serious mistakes under extraordinary marital stress.”

He claimed Maya’s sudden wealth created a power imbalance.

He accused Julian of manipulating her.

He suggested Vanessa fabricated recordings for immunity.

Then Richard testified.

He cried.

Maya almost admired the performance.

“I love my daughter.”

Maybe true.

“I never intended to frighten her.”

False.

“I only wanted to take her away from the chaos Maya created.”

False.

“I regret what happened at the birthday party every day.”

Maya watched him.

He regretted consequences.

Not the act.

Then Richard’s attorney called Maya.

Samuel whispered,

“Stay with facts.”

Maya nodded.

She took the oath.

Richard’s attorney began gently.

“Mrs. Vance, during your marriage you depended financially on your husband?”

“Yes.”

“You worked part-time?”

“Yes.”

“You had no significant assets you were aware of?”

“Correct.”

“So it is fair to say Mr. Vance provided the primary household support.”

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

The attorney continued.

“And after learning you controlled hundreds of millions of dollars, your behavior toward Mr. Vance changed dramatically.”

“Yes.”

“Would you say you became more aggressive?”

“No.”

“Yet you took control of his company.”

“I exercised voting rights belonging to a trust.”

“You suspended him.”

“After evidence of financial misconduct.”

“You froze assets.”

“Investigators did.”

“You removed your child from her father.”

“A judge restricted his access after he tried to take her to Portugal.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

The attorney changed direction.

“Mrs. Vance, is it possible wealth has influenced your perception of your marriage?”

Maya looked at Richard.

“No.”

“Not at all?”

“Wealth changed one thing.”

“What?”

“It gave me the ability to stop being afraid of his threats.”

The courtroom went quiet.

Richard’s attorney paused.

Then came the final attack.

“Isn’t it true that you are now romantically involved with Mr. Sterling?”

Samuel objected.

The judge allowed limited questioning.

Maya answered.

“No.”

Technically true.

“Do you have feelings for him?”

Richard stared at her.

Maya remained calm.

“That has nothing to do with whether Richard is safe around Lily.”

The judge agreed.

Then Samuel presented evidence.

The birthday video.

The attempted international removal.

Forged papers.

Messages calling Lily “leverage.”

Richard’s expression deteriorated.

But the strongest evidence came last.

Vanessa’s old phone contained one deleted video.

She had accidentally left it recording inside Richard’s office.

Date:

Two nights before Lily’s birthday.

Olivia sat opposite Richard.

Olivia said,

“Maya won’t leave unless you push her.”

Richard replied,

“What if she takes Lily?”

“She won’t have anywhere to go.”

“What if she does?”

“Then custody.”

Richard laughed.

“She doesn’t stand a chance against us.”

Olivia leaned forward.

“Make sure there are witnesses when she loses control.”

Richard asked,

“And if she stays calm?”

Olivia’s answer:

“Humiliate her until she doesn’t.”

The courtroom watched in silence.

Richard’s face turned gray.

Then came something even he apparently forgot was recorded.

Richard smiled.

“If the inheritance is real, once we prove she’s unstable, I control everything.”

Olivia answered,

“Exactly.”

Maya looked at Richard.

Eleven years.

A daughter.

A home.

Birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

Illness.

Arguments.

Apologies.

And underneath it, at least toward the end, a plan.

The judge removed Richard’s decision-making authority regarding Lily.

Any future visitation would require therapeutic supervision and a professional recommendation.

Maya received sole legal and physical custody.

Richard lowered his head.

Maya felt no triumph.

Only release.

Outside, reporters shouted.

She did not stop.

Then federal agents entered the courthouse.

They were not there for Richard.

Samuel took Maya aside.

“They found Olivia.”

“Where?”

“New Jersey.”

Maya blinked.

“She came back?”

“She never really left.”

Olivia had used Canada as misdirection.

She had been hiding less than forty miles from Manhattan.

Agents had also recovered a laptop.

The Orchid archival access logs were intact.

And with the master key, investigators decrypted them.

Samuel looked shaken.

“What did they find?”

“Payments connected to your mother’s oncology clinic.”

Maya gripped his arm.

“Did Olivia kill her?”

Samuel’s voice dropped.

“They found evidence someone paid to alter one medication shipment.”

Maya’s eyes filled.

“Who?”

Samuel looked toward the courthouse doors where Richard was being taken back into custody.

“Charles authorized the payment.”

Maya stopped.

Not Olivia.

Charles.

May you like

Then Samuel added,

“But Olivia approved the amount.”
