CHAPTER 4 — THE DAUGHTER WHO CAME HOME

Chapter purpose:

Bring Elena back into Isabel’s territory under controlled circumstances, force a public confrontation, and reveal that the attempted exploitation was part of a larger ownership scheme.

By afternoon, every news station in the state was waiting outside the Vargas mansion.

Isabel had turned the estate into a stage.

Elena intended to take it from her.

Matthew’s team arranged the plan carefully.

Elena would not enter secretly.

She would arrive in daylight, accompanied by attorneys, independent journalists, federal observers, and a private medical specialist prepared to challenge the psychiatric documents Isabel had submitted.

Matthew would remain nearby but out of sight.

“You cannot stand beside me,” Elena told him.

They were inside an armored vehicle parked several miles from the estate.

“If you appear, Isabel will say you’re controlling me.”

“She will say that regardless.”

“But the cameras need to see me walk in alone.”

Matthew’s jaw tightened.

“You will not be alone.”

“I need to look like I am.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

The connection between them had formed in less than twenty-four hours, forged by fear, shared grief, and enemies who had tied their families together long before they met.

But Elena knew dependence could become another cage.

She needed to reclaim herself publicly.

Matthew seemed to understand.

He handed her a small earpiece.

“If you say the word ‘rain,’ security enters.”

“What if they block the signal?”

“Press the button beneath your sleeve.”

“What if they search me?”

“Then I will assume the situation is compromised and enter anyway.”

Elena almost smiled.

“You’re not good at staying out of things.”

“No.”

The vehicle stopped near the estate gates.

Elena stepped out.

The rain had ended, leaving the sky pale and cold.

Reporters shouted the moment they saw her.

“Elena!”

“Were you kidnapped?”

“Did you attack Victor Ambrose?”

“Are you involved with Matthew Carranza?”

“Did you steal company records?”

She continued walking.

Her borrowed navy dress reached below her knees. Makeup could not fully hide the bruise on her cheek, and she had refused to conceal the marks on her wrists.

Let them see.

The gates opened.

Isabel stood on the front steps.

For one second, the perfect grieving stepmother vanished.

Rage flashed across her face.

Then the cameras turned toward her, and concern replaced it.

“Elena!”

She descended the steps with her arms open.

Elena stopped six feet away.

“Do not touch me.”

The words carried across every microphone.

Isabel froze.

“My darling, you’re confused.”

“I am not confused.”

“You’ve been through something traumatic.”

“Yes. You locked me in a bedroom with Victor Ambrose.”

The reporters erupted.

Isabel’s face remained composed.

“That is a terrible delusion.”

Elena turned toward the cameras.

“Last night, my stepmother told me that my body was payment for her business debt. When I refused, she struck me and locked the door from outside.”

“That is a lie!” Isabel shouted.

The performance cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Elena held up a copy of Dr. Lane’s medical report.

“These injuries were documented by an independent physician. My statement has been provided to federal investigators.”

Captain Hale appeared at the doorway.

“You need to come inside, Ms. Vargas.”

Elena looked directly at him.

“You issued a false missing-person alert claiming I was armed.”

“We had reason to believe you were dangerous.”

“To whom?”

Hale stepped closer.

“Our priority is your safety.”

“No. Your priority is Isabel’s protection.”

Jonathan Price emerged behind him.

“Elena, legally, your stepmother has temporary authority over your medical care. You must comply.”

Elena faced him.

“My father named me sole beneficiary of a protected trust.”

Jonathan’s complexion changed.

Only for a second.

But Elena saw it.

“So you found the watch,” he said.

The microphones captured every word.

Silence fell.

Jonathan realized his mistake.

Elena’s heartbeat quickened.

“I never said where the trust information was stored.”

Isabel turned toward him with murderous fury.

Jonathan recovered quickly.

“Alejandro once mentioned—”

“No,” Elena interrupted. “He did not.”

She stepped closer to the cameras.

“My father’s attorney just revealed that he knew about hidden evidence he claimed did not exist.”

Jonathan retreated toward the doorway.

Captain Hale moved to block the reporters.

“This gathering is over.”

Elena raised her voice.

“Victor Ambrose tried to assault me.”

A reporter shouted, “Where is Mr. Ambrose now?”

Isabel answered too quickly.

“He left the estate last night.”

Elena looked at her.

“That’s strange.”

“What is?”

“Because security records show his car never passed through the front gate.”

Isabel’s eyes narrowed.

Elena did not actually know whether security records proved that.

But Isabel’s reaction told her something important.

Ambrose had not left normally.

“Where is he?” Elena demanded.

Isabel stepped close enough that only Elena could hear her next words.

“You should have stayed in the car.”

Elena’s blood chilled.

Isabel knew more about Matthew’s car than a security photograph revealed.

“You arranged it,” Elena whispered.

Isabel smiled faintly.

“Arranged what?”

“The road. Matthew. The tracker.”

For the first time, uncertainty entered Isabel’s eyes.

Elena continued.

“You wanted me to run into someone important. You wanted a scandal.”

Isabel’s smile disappeared.

Behind Elena, reporters continued shouting questions.

Jonathan tried to guide Isabel inside.

Elena saw a fresh scratch along his neck.

Then she noticed something through the open front door.

Mud on the marble floor.

A trail leading toward the west corridor.

The old wine cellar.

As a child, Elena had been forbidden from entering it.

Her father had once told her the cellar contained more secrets than bottles.

She turned toward the entrance.

Captain Hale blocked her.

“You are not entering.”

“This is my family home.”

“Not under the guardianship order.”

Elena raised her voice.

“Why are you preventing the legal beneficiary of the Vargas estate from entering her own residence?”

Cameras pushed closer.

Hale knew touching her publicly would look bad.

He stepped aside.

Elena entered.

Isabel followed, whispering, “You are making a fatal mistake.”

“Like my father did?”

Isabel stopped.

Elena kept walking.

The muddy trail continued through the west corridor.

In her earpiece, Matthew’s voice spoke quietly.

“Your security feed shows Hale moving two officers toward the rear entrance.”

“I see the trail,” Elena murmured.

“What trail?”

“Someone went to the cellar.”

“Do not go down alone.”

Elena reached the cellar door.

A new electronic lock had been installed.

Jonathan appeared behind her.

“That area is restricted.”

“Why?”

“Company records.”

“Then you won’t mind federal investigators reviewing them.”

Elena pressed the old brass handle.

Locked.

She looked at Isabel.

“Open it.”

“No.”

One reporter had managed to enter with the legal team.

His camera remained live.

Elena addressed it.

“My stepmother refuses to open a room inside the estate after a man accused of attacking me disappeared from the property.”

Isabel’s face tightened.

“Open it,” she told Jonathan.

He entered a code.

The lock clicked.

The smell reached them first.

Wine.

Mold.

And blood.

Elena descended the stone steps.

The cellar lights flickered on.

Rows of bottles lined the walls.

At the far end stood a chair.

Rope lay beside it.

A dark stain marked the floor.

But Victor Ambrose was gone.

Elena approached the chair.

Something glittered beneath it.

A gold cuff link engraved with the initials V.A.

The reporter filmed it.

Jonathan lunged for the camera.

Matthew’s security team entered instantly through the rear corridor, followed by federal agents.

Captain Hale shouted, “This is private property!”

One agent displayed a warrant.

“A valid one.”

Isabel stared at Elena.

“You planned this.”

“No,” Elena said. “You did.”

Agents began searching the cellar.

Behind a wine rack, they discovered a concealed door.

Inside was a narrow office filled with shredding machines, empty file boxes, and a wall of monitors connected to cameras throughout the mansion.

One monitor showed Elena’s former bedroom.

Another showed the upstairs guest room.

The room where Isabel had locked her with Ambrose.

The camera footage from that night had been deleted.

But the system archive contained earlier recordings.

Elena watched in horror as videos appeared.

Other women entering rooms with wealthy guests.

Employees being threatened.

Documents being signed under pressure.

Isabel’s company had not merely hidden financial crimes.

It had created leverage over powerful people.

Matthew entered the cellar.

The cameras turned toward him.

He ignored them.

“Elena.”

She pointed at the monitors.

“My father knew.”

“He tried to stop it.”

An agent called them into the concealed office.

They had found a contract on a desk.

It was dated the previous week.

Under the terms, Isabel would transfer controlling influence over Vargas Global to Victor Ambrose in exchange for a massive private investment.

But one condition had to be met.

Ambrose required marriage to the legal heir.

Elena Vargas.

Elena read the paragraph twice.

“She wasn’t giving me to him for one night.”

Matthew’s face hardened.

“She planned to force you into marriage.”

Jonathan moved toward the stairs.

An agent blocked him.

Isabel remained perfectly still.

Then Elena saw another document beneath the contract.

A medical declaration stating Elena was incapable of making legal decisions.

It had been prepared before the party.

Before Elena escaped.

Before the supposed psychotic break.

The entire night had been planned.

A scream came from the rear of the cellar.

One of the agents opened a refrigerated storage room.

Victor Ambrose lay on the floor, unconscious, his shirt soaked with blood.

He was alive.

Barely.

As medics rushed toward him, his eyes opened.

He saw Elena.

Then Isabel.

His hand lifted weakly.

Not toward Elena.

Toward her stepmother.

“She stabbed me,” he whispered.

Every camera in the cellar recorded the accusation.

Isabel did not deny it.

She looked at Elena and smiled.

May you like

Then she reached into Jonathan’s coat, pulled out a pistol, and pressed it against Elena’s head.

“Tell Matthew to move,” Isabel said, “or your inheritance ends here.”
