CHAPTER 5 — THE PRICE OF A DAUGHTER

Chapter purpose:

Create a hostage confrontation, reveal Isabel’s deepest motive, expose Elena’s mother’s hidden history, and force Matthew to sacrifice something valuable to save Elena.

The cellar became silent.

Isabel’s arm locked around Elena’s neck.

The gun pressed against her temple.

Federal agents raised their weapons.

Matthew did not move.

“Lower them,” Isabel ordered.

No one obeyed.

She pushed the barrel harder against Elena’s skin.

“I said lower them!”

The lead agent looked at Elena, then slowly lowered his weapon.

The others followed.

Matthew remained near the concealed office.

His eyes never left Elena’s face.

“Let her go,” he said.

Isabel laughed.

“You still believe commands are power.”

“No. But I know fear is weakening your hand.”

Isabel’s grip tightened.

“You know nothing about me.”

“I know you planned to sell Elena to Ambrose. I know you tried to have Lucia killed. I know you stole evidence from Sofia’s memorial.”

“You know what I allowed you to discover.”

Elena listened to Isabel’s breathing.

Fast.

Uneven.

Her stepmother had always seemed strongest when everyone else panicked.

Now Isabel was surrounded by witnesses, cameras, and evidence.

Control was slipping away.

That made her more dangerous.

“Why did you stab Ambrose?” Elena asked.

Isabel’s cheek brushed hers.

“He became impatient.”

“He threatened to expose you?”

“He forgot his place.”

Ambrose groaned from the floor while medics worked around him.

Isabel glanced toward the exit.

She wanted escape.

The gun was not her final act.

It was her bargaining tool.

“What do you want?” Matthew asked.

“My vehicle brought to the east courtyard. No tracking device. No officers within one mile.”

“And Elena?”

“She comes with me.”

“No.”

“Then she dies here.”

Elena looked at Matthew.

His expression remained calm, but she could see the calculation behind his eyes.

Distances.

Angles.

Reaction time.

The gun’s position.

He was searching for a way to save her without gambling with her life.

Isabel noticed.

“Don’t be heroic,” she said. “Your sister tried that.”

Matthew’s face changed.

“You were there when Sofia died.”

Isabel smiled.

“I watched her realize no one was coming.”

Victoria Carranza, standing near the cellar stairs, made a broken sound.

Matthew took one step forward.

Isabel cocked the gun.

Elena closed her eyes.

“Stop,” she whispered.

Matthew stopped.

Isabel looked satisfied.

“You see?” she said to Elena. “Men always believe power belongs to them until a woman places something precious in danger.”

“You don’t know anything about love,” Elena said.

“I know its value. I know how easily it can be used.”

“Is that why you married my father?”

Isabel’s smile vanished.

“I married your father because he inherited what should have belonged to me.”

Elena frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

“Your mother never told you?”

“My mother died when I was five.”

“That is the story Alejandro preferred.”

The room seemed to narrow.

Elena’s pulse hammered.

“What story?”

Isabel leaned close.

“Your mother did not die.”

Elena stopped breathing.

“She left.”

“No.”

“She discovered what Alejandro’s father had done to my family. She planned to take you and expose everything. Alejandro stopped her.”

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Isabel’s voice became almost tender.

“Why do you think there was no funeral you remember? Why do you think you were never allowed to visit her grave?”

Elena searched her childhood memories.

A framed photograph.

Her father telling her that her mother had become ill while traveling.

A closed casket.

No grave visits because, he said, grief should not become a destination.

“You hated my mother,” Elena whispered.

“I hated what she stole.”

“What?”

“My name. My father. My inheritance.”

The words made no sense.

Then Victoria spoke from the stairs.

“Isabel was born Isabel Marquez.”

Isabel turned sharply.

Victoria continued.

“Her mother worked for the Vargas family. There were rumors Alejandro’s father had another daughter.”

Elena stared at Isabel.

“You were my father’s half sister?”

“No!” Isabel screamed.

The gun jerked against Elena’s head.

“I was the legitimate daughter in every way that mattered. My mother loved him. He promised to leave his wife. Instead, he paid her to disappear and gave everything to Alejandro.”

The truth was uglier than Elena expected.

Not because it excused Isabel.

Because it explained how hatred had become her identity.

“You married your half brother?” Elena asked.

“Not by blood. Alejandro’s mother had an affair. Everyone knew it except the man who raised him.”

Matthew’s attorney spoke quietly.

“Do you have proof?”

“I had proof. Your precious Alejandro destroyed it.”

“So you punished him,” Elena said.

“I gave him the life he deserved.”

“You killed him.”

Isabel’s silence was the answer.

The federal agent shifted.

Isabel saw it.

She fired.

The bullet struck the stone wall near his shoulder.

People screamed.

Matthew moved, but stopped when Isabel returned the gun to Elena’s head.

“Bring the vehicle!” Isabel shouted.

The lead agent spoke into his radio.

Elena’s ears rang from the gunshot.

Matthew looked at her.

She saw a message in his eyes.

Wait.

Trust me.

But trust was difficult with steel against her skull.

Minutes passed.

A vehicle engine started outside.

Isabel began pulling Elena toward the stairs.

“Move.”

Elena obeyed.

At the top of the cellar, reporters waited behind officers. Cameras captured Isabel emerging with Elena at gunpoint.

For the first time, the world saw the woman beneath the charitable smiles.

The front hall opened toward the east courtyard.

A black SUV waited with its driver’s door open.

“Everyone back!” Isabel shouted.

Matthew followed at a distance.

“You won’t leave the property,” he said.

“I don’t need to.”

Isabel dragged Elena toward the vehicle.

Then Elena saw movement in an upstairs window.

Lucia.

Her shoulder bandaged.

She held something in her hand.

A remote control.

Elena remembered the estate’s security shutters.

Lucia pressed the button.

Metal gates crashed down over the courtyard exits.

Isabel spun toward the sound.

That half-second was enough.

Elena drove her heel down onto Isabel’s foot and threw her head backward.

Bone struck bone.

Isabel cried out.

The gun fired into the air.

Matthew crossed the courtyard before Elena hit the ground.

He struck Isabel’s wrist.

The pistol skidded across the stone.

Agents rushed forward.

Isabel clawed at Elena’s dress, screaming, “She belongs to me!”

Elena turned.

“No.”

Her voice carried across the courtyard.

“I never did.”

Agents forced Isabel to the ground and handcuffed her.

Reporters shouted questions.

Matthew placed himself between Elena and the cameras.

She was shaking violently now.

The danger had ended, but her body had not realized it.

He touched her face carefully.

“Are you hurt?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re safe.”

The words nearly broke her.

But before she could answer, Isabel began laughing from the ground.

“You think this ends with me?”

Elena looked toward her.

Isabel’s hair had fallen across her face. Blood ran from her nose.

Yet she smiled.

“Ask Matthew what he agreed to before coming here.”

Elena turned.

Matthew’s expression changed.

“What does she mean?”

He did not answer.

Isabel laughed louder.

“He traded Carranza Holdings for your life.”

Elena stared at him.

Matthew’s attorney looked horrified.

“What did you do?”

Matthew lowered his voice.

“Before entering the estate, I received a call from the lenders controlling our emergency credit line.”

Isabel continued from the ground.

“I gave them evidence that Carranza Holdings financed Alejandro’s illegal accounts. They froze everything.”

“That evidence is false,” Elena said.

“False evidence still creates real panic,” Isabel replied.

Matthew’s attorney grabbed her phone.

“Our board is calling an emergency vote.”

Elena’s stomach dropped.

“What vote?”

“To remove Matthew as chief executive.”

Matthew looked at Elena.

“I knew the risk.”

“You let your company collapse to help me?”

“It has not collapsed.”

“Not yet,” Isabel said.

An officer pulled her toward a police vehicle.

She leaned back and delivered one final blow.

“And when Victor Ambrose wakes, he will tell the world Matthew paid him to seduce Elena, frame Isabel, and steal Vargas Global.”

Ambrose was loaded into an ambulance.

His eyes remained closed.

But one of his hands shifted beneath the blanket.

In his palm was a phone.

The screen showed an active recording.

Someone had been listening to everything.

May you like

Then the phone sent a single message to an unknown number.

PHASE ONE FAILED. BEGIN PHASE TWO.
