Part 4: The Master’s Legacy

The timer hit zero, the guard’s finger squeezed the trigger, and a deafening gunshot echoed through the sterile room—but the bullet never hit Marcus.
The brainwashed guard collapsed to the floor, a smoking hole in his armor. Standing behind him in the shattered doorway was an old man in a pristine white lab coat, holding a heavy pulse-pistol. It was Dr. Abraham Vance—Marcus’s father, the legendary founder of the empire, who had supposedly died three years ago.
The remaining brainwashed guards instantly dropped their weapons, their eyes blinking rapidly as their neural chips went offline. Marcus stood frozen, his jaw dropped, unable to comprehend the ghost standing before him. Even Liam stopped crying, staring at the old man with a strange, innate sense of recognition.

Dr. Abraham lowered the weapon, his eyes softening as he looked at the boy. "I had to fake my death to draw them out, Marcus. The voice on the monitor... it wasn’t a rival. It was the AI system I created to protect Liam. It was testing you."
Marcus’s shock turned to fury. "Testing me?! You let Evelyn torture him! You let a nanite get planted in his chest!" He stepped forward, shielding Liam defensively.
The old man sighed, typing a rapid sequence into a handheld device. The red glowing dot under Liam’s skin turned a safe, calm green, dissolving completely. "There was no bomb, Marcus. It was a biometric scanner. The AI needed to see if you would sacrifice your life for a child who doesn't share your blood. If you ran, the empire would have locked you out forever."
Dr. Abraham stepped closer, but he didn't look at Marcus. He looked directly at Liam. "And there is one last truth you need to know, Marcus. Evelyn’s DNA test wasn't wrong. She thought Liam wasn't a Vance because she compared his DNA to yours."
Marcus frowned, confused. "What do you mean?"
Dr. Abraham looked up, a heavy sadness in his eyes. "You are the one who was adopted, Marcus. I took you in when you were a baby. Liam is my biological son—born late in my life. He is my true blood. You are not a Vance by blood... but today, you proved you are a Vance by heart."
The revelation shattered Marcus's reality, but as he looked down at the boy clinging tightly to his neck, the truth didn't matter anymore. Blood didn't make a father; love did.

Marcus looked up at his father, then down at Liam. He smiled through his tears, tightening his grip on his son. "He is my son, Dad. Nothing will ever change that."
Dr. Abraham smiled proudly, placing a hand on Marcus's shoulder. "Then the empire is in safe hands. Welcome home, son." As the lab doors opened to the bright morning light outside, Marcus carried Liam out of the darkness, finally free, completely unbroken.
