Chapter 22 - LUCAS’S LETTER

I read Lucas’s letter three years after the fall.

Not because he earned timing.

Because I was ready.

It began:

I keep wanting to tell you I didn’t mean for you to fall, but I understand that sentence protects me more than it helps you.

Better than expected.

Then:

I wanted to stop you from leaving. I used my hands. The stairs were there. Your pregnancy was obvious. Whatever outcome I imagined, I chose the risk.

Yes.

Then finance.

I knew the second certificate was false. I told myself the Northpoint investor would fund before the bank noticed, and then we would correct everything. Dad taught me to call temporary deception “timing.”

That line hurt.

Then:

He did not tell me to push you. I need that to be clear even if it makes me worse.

Good.

Then:

I recorded you because we planned to use your anger against you.

There.

No minimization.

Then:

I am sorry Noah carried the phone. He should never have been in the middle of adult fraud or violence.

Important.

No request for forgiveness.

He asked only whether, someday, he could apologize to June.

No.

June was not a victim who needed his confession.

She had been inside me.

She did not remember.

I did not want her identity shaped around being the fetus at the staircase.

I replied through counsel:

Thank you for making Harrison’s role and your own distinct. Do not contact June. If I ever choose direct contact, I will initiate it.

That was all.

Lucas accepted.

Behavior.

Years later after release, he worked in a logistics company unrelated to development or finance approvals.

Lower status.

No family company comeback.

He remained close to some relatives.

Not us.

Evan exchanged birthday texts eventually.

May you like

Brothers at distance.

No hug montage.
