CHAPTER 1: THE GOLDEN CAGE

The chandelier in the grand dining room of the Barrett mansion hummed with a cold, artificial light. To anyone on the outside looking in through the frosted glass windows, Evelyn Vance was living a contemporary fairy tale. She was young, breathtakingly beautiful, and married to Julian Barrett, the charismatic heir to a burgeoning tech empire. And now, she was seven months pregnant with the next Barrett heir.

But fairy tales, Evelyn had learned too late, were often written in blood.

"You’re cutting the steak wrong, Evelyn," a sharp, aristocratic voice sliced through the silence.

Evelyn froze, her knife hovering over the medium-rare filet mignon. At the head of the table sat Victoria Barrett, her mother-in-law. Victoria was a woman sculpted from ice and diamonds. Every hair on her head was perfectly coiffed, and her dark velvet dress absorbed the light around her, making her look like a shadow lingering over Evelyn’s life.

"I’m sorry, Mother," Evelyn murmured, keeping her eyes cast downward. The pregnancy had taken a toll on her; her ankles were swollen, and a constant, dull ache throbbed in her lower back.

"Don't call me that," Victoria snapped, her voice dropping an octave, dripping with disdain. "You are a girl from nowhere. A nameless, penniless orphan Julian dragged in from the streets because he was blinded by a pretty face. You have no breeding, no class. And frankly, looking at your bloated face every evening makes me lose my appetite."

Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat. She looked across the long mahogany table at Julian, silently begging for him to say something. To defend her. To be the man who had promised to protect her until death do them part.

Julian didn't look up from his phone. He took a sip of his red wine, his expression indifferent. "Just listen to my mother, Evelyn. She’s only trying to help you fit into our world."

"Fit in?" Evelyn’s voice trembled, a rare spark of defiance lighting up her tired eyes. "Julian, she called me a parasite yesterday. She told the maids not to clean our quarters because I need to 'learn the value of labor.' I am seven months pregnant!"

Julian finally set his phone down, his brow furrowing in irritation. "And you never stop complaining about it! Millions of women get pregnant every day, Evelyn. Stop acting like you’re carrying a miracle. You’re stressed, and you’re making the entire house miserable."

The coldness in his voice cut deeper than any insult Victoria could throw. Evelyn felt a tear slip down her cheek, burning against her skin. This wasn't the man she married. A year ago, Julian was attentive, gentle, and fiercely protective. But ever since they moved into the Barrett estate, Victoria had been dripping poison into his ear, slowly eroding his love for her, replacing it with doubt and resentment.

"If you are finished ruining our dinner with your theatrics," Victoria said, standing up and smoothing her dress, "come with me to the upper gallery. The decorators sent the fabric samples for the nursery, and since you lack any aesthetic sense, I will choose them for you."

Evelyn wanted to refuse. She wanted to run to her room and lock the door. But she knew that causing a scene would only trigger Julian’s temper. Slowly, she pushed herself up from the chair, placing a protective hand over her round belly. Just a few more weeks, she whispered to her unborn child. Just hold on.

The grand staircase of the mansion was a masterpiece of dark mahogany, winding up three stories like a sleeping serpent. As Evelyn followed Victoria up the steps, her breath grew shallow.

Halfway up the stairs, Victoria stopped. She turned around, looking down at Evelyn with a chilling, vacant smile.

"You think this baby is your golden ticket, don't you?" Victoria whispered, her eyes darting toward the empty hallway above. "You think once the child is born, Julian will never be able to rid himself of you."

"I love Julian, and I love our baby," Evelyn said, her voice shaking. "I don't care about your money."

"Liars always say that," Victoria hissed. Suddenly, her face distorted with sudden, vicious rage. "But you will never inherit a dime of the Barrett fortune. I will make sure Julian divorces you, and we will take this child. You are nothing but a surrogate to us."

"No!" Evelyn cried, taking a step back. "You won't touch my baby!"

"Oh, really?" Victoria took a step closer, her hand reaching out.

Evelyn saw the movement too late. Victoria didn't just push her; she grabbed Evelyn’s wrist and twisted, purposefully unbalancing the pregnant woman on the steep, polished wooden steps.

Evelyn gasped, her foot slipping on the slick wood. Time seemed to slow down as gravity took hold. She reached frantically for the banister, but her fingers scraped uselessly against the polished wood.

"Julian!" Evelyn screamed, a sound of pure terror echoing through the high ceilings of the mansion as she pitched backward down the stairs.
