CHAPTER 4: THE POINT OF NO RETURN

The smell of copper and expensive perfume hung thick in the air of the grand hall. Evelyn sat crumpled on the cold marble floor at the base of the staircase, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. The light blue silk of her maternity dress was stained with dust and her own blood. Her face was unrecognizable—a deep, purplish bruise had blossomed across her left cheek, and thin, angry scratches lined her neck, bleeding into the collar of her dress.
"Where were you?!" Julian’s voice boomed through the hall, a thunderclap of unbridled fury.
He stood three steps up on the staircase, looming over her like a vengeful judge. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild with a toxic mix of anger and frustration. He pointed a trembling finger directly at her face. "You left the estate without permission! You went out to meet someone, didn't you? Who were you with, Evelyn?! Who is the father of that damn child?!"
Evelyn looked up at him, her vision blurry with tears. The physical pain in her body was nothing compared to the agony of her heart breaking into a million irreparable pieces.
"Your mother..." Evelyn choked out, her voice cracking, filled with raw, unadulterated trauma. She pointed a shaking hand upward. "Your mother humiliated me... she beat me... and you... you stood there and listened to every single word! You did nothing!"
Behind Julian, standing elegantly on the upper landing, was Victoria. She adjusted her diamond bracelet, her face a mask of cold, aristocratic indifference. She looked down at Evelyn as if she were a piece of garbage that had accidentally been tracked onto her expensive rugs.
"Know your place, girl," Victoria said, her voice carrying a chillingly calm authority as she descended a step. "Look at yourself. A hysterical, pathetic liar. You never belonged to this family, and you never will."
Julian shifted his gaze from his mother back to Evelyn. There was no pity in his eyes. Only disgust. "My mother is right. You’ve been playing the victim since day one. You're a stain on the Barrett name. Get up. Get up right now and pack your bags. We are done."
Evelyn let out a broken, hysterical laugh. She was bleeding, she was in labor, and her husband was throwing her out onto the street to die. "You're a monster, Julian," she whispered. "God will punish both of you."
"There is no one coming to save you, Evelyn," Victoria sneered, reaching the bottom of the stairs. "You are entirely alone."
BANG.
The sound was explosive. The massive, ten-foot-tall mahogany double doors of the mansion didn't just open—they were violently thrown apart, slamming against the stone walls with a force that rattled the crystal chandelier hanging overhead.
Julian jumped, spinning around toward the entrance. Victoria froze, her hand flying to her throat.
Through the threshold walked a man.
He was an elderly gentleman, his hair a stark, commanding white, but he stood with the posture of a king ruling an empire. He wore a tailored royal blue suit that screamed old money, power, and absolute authority. His face was a mask of cold, lethal fury.
Flanking him were four massive, broad-shouldered men in identical black suits—vicious-looking bodyguards whose expressions made it clear they were authorized to use lethal force.
Arthur Vance had arrived.
The silence that followed was suffocating. The only sound was the heavy, rhythmic thud of Arthur’s leather shoes walking across the polished marble floor straight toward the staircase.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. His eyes widened, bulging out of his head in absolute horror. His skin turned a sickly shade of pale, and his knees visibly trembled. As the CEO of Barrett Enterprises, Julian knew exactly who that man was. Everyone in the country knew who he was.
Arthur Vance. The reclusive billionaire. The real estate tycoon who owned the banks that funded Julian’s company, the man who practically controlled the city’s economy. The man Julian had spent the last three years trying to get a five-minute meeting with, only to be rejected every time.
But Julian didn't understand. Why was Arthur Vance in his house?
Arthur stopped just three feet away from where Evelyn was crumpled on the floor. He didn't look at Julian. He didn't look at Victoria. His eyes fell upon the bruised, bleeding, pregnant girl on the floor.
A soft, broken sob escaped Arthur’s chest—a sound of a father seeing his worst nightmare come to life.
"My daughter..." Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of heartbreak and murderous rage.
He dropped to his knees, completely ignoring his expensive suit as it touched the bloody floor, and wrapped his powerful arms around Evelyn. "My sweet girl... Daddy’s here. I’m so sorry I’m late."
Julian’s mind went entirely blank. The world around him seemed to tilt.
Daughter?
Evelyn... the orphan? The girl with no family? The girl he had just allowed his mother to beat and humiliate... was the sole heiress to the Vance empire?
May you like
Julian looked at his mother, whose face had gone completely white, her mouth hanging open in sheer terror. Julian fell to his knees on the stairs, his voice a breathless, choked gasp.
"My... my daughter!" Arthur roared, standing up and turning to face Julian, his eyes burning with the wrath of a god. "You dared touch my daughter!"
