Chapter 1 :The Christmas He Abandoned His Family

The message arrived on an icy December evening.
I was standing in my office overlooking downtown Austin when my phone vibrated.
Dominic Vance.
For a long moment, I simply stared at his name.
Eight years.
Eight years since the man who promised to love me forever disappeared the moment I told him I was pregnant.
Eight years since he accused me of lying.
Eight years since he filed for divorce, changed his number, and vanished before hearing the heartbeat of even one of our children.
And now...
He wanted me at his family's Christmas dinner.
I read the message once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Join us for Christmas dinner at my mother's house in Boulder on December 25. The family wants to see you one last time.
A quiet laugh escaped my lips.
Not because it was funny.
Because I understood exactly what he was trying to do.
Dominic still imagined I was the broken woman he had abandoned all those years ago.
He expected me to arrive alone.
Defeated.
Easy to pity.
He had no idea what my life had become.
“Audrey?”
My assistant, Paige, appeared in the doorway.
“Is everything okay?”
I handed her my phone.
She finished reading and looked up in disbelief.
“You're not actually going, are you?”
I turned back toward the city skyline.
“Oh,” I said with a faint smile.
“I'm absolutely going.”
Christmas morning arrived beneath a clear winter sky.
A helicopter lifted above the Texas skyline carrying the five people who mattered most in my life.
“Mama,” Logan asked excitedly, “are we finally going to meet Grandpa?”
“And Grandma?” Chloe chimed in.
“Maybe,” I answered with a gentle smile.
Across from me sat my four children, dressed in matching holiday outfits.
Two boys.
Two girls.
Eight-year-old quadruplets.
Every one of them carried unmistakable pieces of Dominic.
His blue eyes.
His smile.
His stubborn jawline.
Anyone who looked at them would recognize the resemblance instantly.
The irony was almost unbelievable.
The man who had fled from fatherhood had spent eight years without realizing he had four children.
As Colorado's snow-covered mountains came into view, my heartbeat grew faster.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I had waited years for this day.
The helicopter touched down on the front lawn of Victoria Vance's mansion in Boulder at exactly 11:47 that morning.
Snow swirled around us as the rotors slowed.
I stepped out first, letting the cold mountain air fill my lungs.
Then Logan climbed down.
Followed by Mason.
Then Chloe.
Then Lily.
Four children.
Four living reminders of the family Dominic had chosen to leave behind.
The mansion's front door burst open.
Victoria appeared first.
The instant she saw us, she froze.
The wineglass slipped from her hand and shattered across the marble floor.
Good.
Let the truth arrive all at once.
I gathered the children beside me.
“Ready?”
Four little heads nodded together.
Together, we walked toward the entrance.
The front door swung open wider.
There stood Dominic.
Older.
Sharper.
Wearing an expensive sweater and the easy confidence of a man convinced life had rewarded every one of his choices.
Beside him stood a beautiful blonde woman in a red holiday dress.
The velvet ring box in his hand suggested she was expecting a Christmas proposal.
Then Dominic looked at the children.
His smile disappeared.
His eyes moved from one small face...
...to the next...
...and then back again.
The resemblance was impossible to deny.
The color drained from his face.
“Dominic...”
the woman beside him whispered.
“Who are those children?”
He never answered.
He couldn't.
For years, I had imagined this exact moment.
The instant he realized what he had thrown away.
The second he understood the price of abandoning his own family.
The day he discovered that while he had erased us from his life...
...we had quietly built an extraordinary one without him.
I stepped across the threshold.
Every conversation inside the house stopped.
Every eye turned toward us.
“Merry Christmas,” I said calmly.
Silence filled the room.
I rested one hand gently on Lily's shoulder and looked directly at the man who had abandoned us.
“I brought the grandchildren your family never knew existed.”
The small ring box slipped from Dominic's hand and struck the hardwood floor.
His girlfriend gasped.
Victoria staggered backward, clutching the doorway for support.
And for the first time in eight years...
Dominic stood face-to-face with the family he had walked away from.
