Chapter 5 – The Paper Trail of Betrayal

Chapter 5 – The Paper Trail of Betrayal
The hotel room was a quiet sanctuary compared to the battlefield we had just left behind.
While Paige sat at the small desk, her laptop screen illuminating her face as she fired off urgent emails to her legal team, I focused entirely on the children. I tucked them into the two queen beds, smoothing the heavy blankets over their shoulders. Within minutes, exhausted by the emotional turbulence of the day and the long drive, all four of them were fast asleep.
I stood between the beds for a long moment, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of their chests. They were safe. The world outside could shake all it wanted, but inside this room, they were untouched.
I walked over to the small sitting area where Paige was working. She looked up, rubbing her temples, a grim but satisfied smile on her lips.
"My office just confirmed the filings," Paige whispered, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the kids. "The moment the courthouse doors open after the holiday weekend, the Vance family is going to hit a wall of litigation they can't bribe their way out of."
"And Dominic?" I asked, sitting down heavily in the armchair opposite her.
"Dominic has been calling my cell phone every ten minutes," Paige said, sliding her vibrating phone across the table to prove her point. His name flashed on the screen. "I'm not answering. Not until we have the upper hand on paper."
Before I could reply, a soft, tentative knock echoed at the hotel room door.
An Unexpected Ally
Paige instantly stood up, her posture defensive. "Did he follow us?"
"He doesn't know which hotel we're at," I murmured, walking cautiously toward the door. I looked through the peephole.
It wasn't Dominic. It wasn't Victoria, either.
Standing in the dimly lit hallway, shivering in a damp wool coat and holding a thick manila folder, was Dr. Benjamin Carter.
I unlocked the deadbolt and opened the door a crack. "Dr. Carter? How did you find us?"
"I've known Paige’s senior partner for twenty years, Audrey. It wasn't hard to guess which boutique hotel your firm retains in town," the doctor said, his voice weary. He looked over his shoulder before stepping quickly into the room. "Please. May I come in? I shouldn't be here, but my conscience won't let me sleep."
I stepped aside, letting him enter. Paige closed the door behind him, locking it instantly.
Dr. Carter didn't look like the confident family physician who had calmly read the DNA results hours earlier. He looked like a man who had suddenly realized he was standing on a sinking ship. He placed the thick manila folder on the table.
"What is this, Doctor?" Paige asked, stepping forward, her legal instincts immediately on high alert.
"Eight years ago, I was asked to perform a routine blood panel on you, Audrey, right before you left town," Dr. Carter said, looking directly into my eyes. "Victoria told me it was for your exit medical clearance. But that wasn't the truth."
I felt the air leave my lungs. "What did she do?"
The Medical Cover-Up
Dr. Carter opened the folder, revealing yellowed medical charts, laboratory orders, and a handwritten note bearing Victoria Vance’s elegant, unmistakable signature.
"You came to my clinic complaining of fatigue. I ran the tests. I discovered you were pregnant with quadruplets," Dr. Carter explained, his voice trembling slightly. "But before I could call you with the results, Victoria intercepted the file. She forced my lab director to flag the file as 'inconclusive' and hand over the originals."
I gripped the back of the armchair, the room spinning.
"She knew," I whispered, the horror of it washing over me. "Before I even knew myself, before I could even tell Dominic... she already knew there were four babies."
"Yes," Dr. Carter nodded grimly. "She knew that if Dominic found out you were carrying quadruplets—the future of the Vance lineage—he would never let you go. He would have married you legally, protected you, and defied her. So, she fabricated the narrative that you were cheating on him, paid off Julianne to present that forged letter, and threatened to ruin your family if you didn't disappear."
"And you went along with it?" Paige snapped, her eyes flashing with fury. "You hid a multiple-pregnancy diagnosis from a patient? Do you know what kind of malpractice—what kind of criminal charges—"
"I was threatened, too, young lady," Dr. Carter interrupted, his voice cracking. "The Vance family funds my entire research clinic. They could have ruined me with a single phone call. But I kept the original records. I kept the proof that Victoria ordered the suppression of your medical data."
He pushed the folder toward me.
"It's all here. The original ultrasound scans from eight years ago, signed by my technician, dated three days before you were forced out of the city. Proof of intentional medical fraud."
The Final Piece of the Puzzle
I stared at the paperwork. This wasn't just a custody battle anymore. This was a criminal conspiracy. Victoria Vance hadn't just protected her son from an "opportunist"—she had systematically stolen eight years of my children's lives, denying them medical care, stability, and their father, all to preserve a pristine family image.
"Why give this to us now?" I asked Dr. Carter quietly.
"Because watching Dominic break down tonight made me realize the damage we caused," the doctor said softly. "He truly didn't know, Audrey. He is a victim of his mother's manipulation just as much as you were. But more importantly... those children deserve justice."
He stood up, adjusting his coat. "Do what you need to do with those files. I will testify if I have to."
After Paige escorted the doctor out, the room fell into a heavy, charged silence. Paige turned to me, her eyes bright with a dangerous, triumphant light.
"Audrey... this changes everything," Paige whispered, looking down at the original medical files. "We don't just have a civil suit anymore. We have the leverage to completely dismantle Victoria Vance's empire."
Before I could answer, my phone on the table lit up again.
It wasn't Dominic this time. It was an unknown number.
I pressed answer and lifted the phone to my ear.
"Audrey."
May you like
The voice on the other end was frantic, breathless, and entirely broken. It was Dominic.
"Please don't hang up," he begged, the sound of the howling wind in the background suggesting he was still outside somewhere. "I just found the rest of it. I found the financial records in my mother's private safe. I know what they did to you."
