Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Power

The executive suite on the top floor of the Cross Atlantic Tower offered a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline glowing beneath the amber light of dusk. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, holding a sleeping infant wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket against my chest. My son’s breathing was deep, steady, and strong—a testament to life conquering the coldest depths of death.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Adrian stepped into the room, holding two crystal glasses of sparkling water. He walked over, handing me one before gently resting a hand on my shoulder, looking down at his grandson with a rare, tender smile softening his weathered face.

"The federal prosecutors just finished their deposition prep," Adrian said quietly. "Victor’s defense team tried to file a plea deal for thirty years. The judge threw it out within five minutes. With the evidence our forensic team compiled, he’s looking at life without parole. Hale Tech has been fully absorbed into our portfolio, and Serena’s assets have been liquidated to establish a trust fund for child welfare and domestic abuse survivors."

I took a slow sip of the sparkling water, feeling the cool liquid soothe my throat. "And the insurance claim?"

Adrian chuckled, a low, rich sound. "Cross Atlantic officially closed the claim under subsection four: fraudulent misrepresentation and criminal conspiracy. Not a single penny of corporate funds was lost. In fact, after liquidating Victor’s personal assets and seizing his hidden offshore holdings, our legal department actually turned a three-million-dollar profit on the whole ordeal."

I looked down at my sleeping son, tracing the soft curve of his cheek with my thumb. The nightmare on that icy cliff in Aspen felt like a lifetime ago—a brutal crucible that had burned away every ounce of weakness, fear, and hesitation I had ever carried.

"My mother spent her whole life hiding from you, Dad," I said softly, turning my head to meet his steel-gray eyes. "She thought protection meant running away."

Adrian’s expression softened, a shadow of regret crossing his features. "She was afraid of my world, Elena. She thought the power I wielded would consume anyone close to me. But she was wrong about you."

"She was," I agreed, lifting my chin with absolute resolve. "Because the world doesn't belong to the people who push others off cliffs. It belongs to the ones who crawl back out of the snow and take everything back."
