Chapter 10 - Ranger’s Third Warning
Ranger had been medically cleared only that afternoon.
Laura never intended to bring him.
David had.
The dog entered through a side corridor wearing a protective vest.
Cole fired toward the bark.
Missed.
Ranger changed direction.
David crashed through another doorway.
Megan dropped.
Laura pulled her away.
Cole fled downstairs.
Federal agents surrounded the building.
For the first time, he had nowhere to go.
They found him on the roof.
Cole stood at the edge.
Gun in one hand.
Phone in the other.
“Stay back!”
Agent Hale approached.
“It’s over.”
“No.”
Cole looked at Laura.
“There’s still one thing Michael never told you.”
Laura felt exhausted.
“I’m done listening.”
“You’ll want this.”
Cole held up the phone.
“Your husband recorded his own death.”
Silence.
Laura stared.
Cole explained that Michael had activated his phone recorder during their final confrontation.
Cole took the phone after killing him.
He kept the recording as insurance against Whitmore.
“Give it to me.”
Cole smiled.
“Come get it.”
He threw the phone.
Not toward Laura.
Over the edge.
Ranger moved before anyone else.
The phone struck a drainage ledge several feet below the roof.
David secured a rope.
Agents eventually retrieved it.
Cole was arrested.
No dramatic escape.
No final gun battle.
Handcuffs.
A squad car.
Exactly what Laura wanted.
Justice required him alive.
The recovered audio was damaged.
Technicians restored it.
Laura listened two days later.
Michael’s voice filled the room.
“Nathan, this ends now.”
Cole replied.
“You don’t understand what you’re destroying.”
“People are dying.”
“They were already sick.”
“That doesn’t make you God.”
Then footsteps.
A struggle.
Michael gasping.
Cole saying:
“Give me the drive.”
Michael laughed weakly.
“You’ll never find it.”
A blow.
Then Michael spoke his final words.
“Laura will.”
Laura cried harder than she had at the funeral.
Because this time she heard him fighting.
He had not simply died.
He had chosen to protect people he might never meet.
Cole was charged with murder, attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy and dozens of additional crimes.
Whitmore became a cooperating defendant.
St. Matthew’s board collapsed.
The hospital faced federal receivership.
But one mystery remained.
Who drugged Laura?
Cole insisted he didn’t know.
Emily didn’t know.
Ryan didn’t know.
Then Detective Hale brought Laura security footage from the charity event.
A woman approached Laura’s water glass.
She wore catering clothes.
Her face turned toward the camera.
Laura knew her.
Her name was Patricia Bennett.
Michael’s mother.
Laura’s mother-in-law.
A woman who had barely spoken to Laura since Michael’s funeral.
Laura stared at the screen.
“Why would Patricia poison me?”
