Chapter 14 - The Last Box Michael Left Behind

Three years after Michael’s death, Laura received a package.

No threats.

No mystery sender.

It came from a storage facility.

ACCOUNT CLOSED. FINAL CONTENTS ENCLOSED.

Inside was a small wooden box.

Laura’s hands trembled.

Michael’s name appeared on the paperwork.

The box contained ordinary things.

A watch.

Old photographs.

A baseball ticket from their first date.

Ranger’s first collar.

And a video camera memory card.

Laura almost couldn’t watch it.

David sat beside her.

“You don’t have to.”

“Yes.”

The video showed Michael at the Pine Hollow cabin.

Healthy.

Smiling.

Alive.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Laura, hopefully you’re watching this when you’re eighty-seven and annoyed because I forgot this box existed.”

She laughed through tears.

“If not…”

Michael paused.

“Then I want you to know something.”

He talked about their marriage.

Their mistakes.

Sophia.

Ranger.

He apologized for keeping secrets.

“I told myself I was protecting you. Sometimes protection is just fear wearing nicer clothes.”

Laura closed her eyes.

That sentence reached somewhere deep.

Michael continued.

“If I’m gone, please love your life anyway.”

David looked away.

“Love people. Be ridiculous. Travel somewhere I would complain about. Let Ranger steal food even though I told you not to.”

Ranger barked from the floor.

Laura laughed.

“And if someday there’s somebody sitting beside you while you watch this…”

Michael smiled.

“I hope he knows how lucky he is.”

David stopped breathing.

Laura stared at the screen.

Michael ended simply.

“You were the best part of my life. Don’t let losing me become the worst part of yours.”

The video ended.

Laura cried.

Not violently.

Quietly.

David held her hand.

“I feel guilty,” she admitted.

“For what?”

“For being happy.”

David squeezed her fingers.

“Michael literally just ordered you not to.”

She laughed.

Two months later, David proposed.

No restaurant.

No giant crowd.

No dramatic speech.

They were at Pine Hollow.

Ranger was covered in mud.

David knelt beside the lake.

“I spent years thinking survival was the same thing as living.”

Laura’s eyes filled.

“You taught me the difference.”

He opened a small box.

“I don’t want to replace what you had. I want to build what comes next.”

Laura looked at Ranger.

“What do you think?”

Ranger barked.

David frowned.

“Was that yes?”

Laura smiled.

“That was absolutely yes.”

She kissed him before he could finish asking.

Later, sitting near the lake, Laura looked at the sunset.

Michael’s memory did not disappear because she loved David.

Love was not a room with only one chair.

She finally understood that.

Her past could remain precious without controlling her future.
