Chapter 14 - The House Without Windows

Matteo recognized the wallpaper.

Tiny green leaves on cream.

His mother had taken him to the house once when he was six.

She said they were visiting an old friend.

They stayed only seventeen minutes.

Elena spent fifteen of those arguing with someone behind a closed door.

Matteo remembered a lake.

A broken stone angel.

A greenhouse without glass.

Carmine searched property records.

Three matches.

Only one belonged to a shell company connected to Mara.

A former convent estate in northern New Jersey.

Salvatore ordered surveillance first.

No rushing.

No anger.

Exactly the opposite of what Mara expected.

Drone images showed six armed guards.

Two vehicles.

Thermal readings: at least nine people inside.

Likely Mara, Isabella, Sofia and Victor.

Victor?

Gabriel frowned at the image.

“He’s there.”

A man with his arm in a sling crossed the courtyard.

Salvatore stared.

“Mara took him after we detained him?”

“Or someone inside our security moved him.”

Carmine’s jaw hardened.

Another betrayal.

They discovered the guard responsible within an hour.

He confessed before Salvatore needed to threaten him.

Mara had his brother in debt.

Always leverage.

Always weak points.

The rescue began before dawn.

This time Matteo stayed at the mansion.

Actually stayed.

Salvatore made him promise.

Matteo made Salvatore promise to come back.

Neither mentioned how much that promise meant.

At the convent house, Gabriel entered from the greenhouse.

Carmine took the east wing.

Salvatore moved through the chapel.

They found Isabella and Sofia in the old dining hall.

Guarded.

Gabriel shot one man in the leg and disarmed another.

“Sofia.”

The girl stared at him.

She knew.

Mara had told her.

“You’re him.”

Gabriel stopped.

“Yes.”

“My father.”

“Yes.”

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

“I’ve had that problem.”

Sofia’s face crumpled with anger.

“This is funny to you?”

“No.”

“Sixteen years.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Everyone says that.”

Isabella interrupted.

“Not now.”

Gunfire sounded outside.

Gabriel cut their restraints.

“Can you run?”

“Yes.”

“Then hate me later.”

Sofia glared.

“Count on it.”

Across the property, Salvatore found Mara in the chapel basement.

Victor stood beside her.

Not restrained.

Salvatore aimed his gun.

“So you chose her.”

Victor laughed.

“I chose the person who told me the truth.”

“She used you.”

“So did Father.”

“That doesn’t make her better.”

“No.”

Victor’s face darkened.

“But at least she admitted it.”

Mara watched like a grandmother observing children argue at dinner.

“Men always become boys around their brothers.”

Salvatore ignored her.

“Where are the others?”

“Already being rescued, I imagine.”

She smiled.

“You were always more disciplined than Gabriel.”

“What do you want?”

“Public confession.”

“From who?”

“Bianca.”

Salvatore frowned.

“About what?”

“That she knew Antonio killed Lucia.”

Bianca had admitted knowing suspicions.

Not certainty.

Mara wanted to destroy her sister publicly.

“You built all of this for revenge against Mother?”

Mara’s face changed.

“My sister took the life meant for me.”

“What life?”

“Antonio.”

Salvatore understood.

Mara had loved his father first.

He chose Bianca.

Then Lucia.

Every wound connected to Antonio.

“You destroyed families because a man didn’t choose you.”

Mara slapped him.

Hard.

Victor looked surprised.

Salvatore did not react.

Mara’s breathing shook.

“You know nothing.”

“I know enough.”

“You carry his face.”

“I didn’t choose that.”

“And his arrogance.”

“Maybe.”

Salvatore lowered his weapon slightly.

“But I don’t carry his debt.”

Mara stared.

“You cannot make children pay for what their parents did.”

Victor flinched.

Salvatore saw it.

“So what happens now?”

Mara smiled.

“You die.”

Victor raised his gun.

But he pointed it at Mara.

Her smile vanished.

“What are you doing?”

Victor’s hand shook.

Salvatore stayed still.

Victor looked at him.

“You’re right about one thing.”

“What?”

“She used me.”

Mara whispered, “Victor.”

“You knew Mother didn’t abandon me willingly.”

Mara’s face tightened.

“She was weak.”

“You told me she chose the Vescari name over me.”

“She did.”

“No.”

Victor’s eyes filled.

“I read Antonio’s confession.”

Salvatore realized someone had transmitted the recording to him.

Maybe the captured guard.

Maybe Victor had always had another route.

“You knew he lied to Lucia.”

Mara stepped backward.

“Victor, think.”

“I have.”

“For once.”

He looked exhausted.

“I spent forty years hating the wrong people.”

Mara’s expression became cold.

Then fast.

She pulled a small gun from her sleeve.

Salvatore fired.

The weapon flew from her hand.

Victor tackled her.

Carmine rushed in moments later.

Mara was taken alive.

Victor surrendered.

No dramatic death.

No martyrdom.

Just an old woman in handcuffs staring at the ruins of a revenge she had fed for half a century.

Outside, Gabriel stood with Sofia.

Awkward.

Destroyed.

Hopeful.

Matteo would later say it was the first time he had ever seen an adult look more frightened than a child.

But the story was not over.

When they returned home, police cars filled the Moretti driveway.

Federal agents stood beside them.

Carmine cursed.

Salvatore stepped from the SUV.

A federal prosecutor approached.

“Salvatore Moretti?”

“Yes.”

“You’re under arrest.”

Bianca rushed outside.

“For what?”

The prosecutor held up the Black Ledger.

“Conspiracy, racketeering, bribery and multiple counts of murder.”

Salvatore looked at Carmine.

The ledger had been stolen from their secure archive.

Mara smiled from the back of the transport vehicle.

One last trap.

May you like

She had never expected to escape.

She expected the truth to destroy them anyway.
