Chapter 17 - The New Moretti House

Salvatore did not return to running the family.
Not the old one.
The illegal operations had been dismantled.
Properties sold.
Crews dissolved.
Some men went legitimate.
Some left.
Some resented him.
Salvatore accepted that.
He converted the Moretti shipping company into a legal logistics firm.
Carmine became security director.
Gabriel handled international operations.
Sofia worked there Saturdays and criticized everything.
Matteo spent afternoons doing homework in Salvatore’s office and pretending not to listen to meetings.
“You’re listening,” Salvatore said one day.
“No.”
“You’re taking notes.”
“For school.”
“Your school assignment says ‘Why refrigerated freight improves margins’?”
Matteo covered the page.
Salvatore smiled.
Home changed too.
The mansion stopped being a fortress.
Some guards remained.
Fewer guns.
More children.
Rosa converted one unused wing into temporary housing for families leaving dangerous situations.
The idea came from Matteo.
“Mom needed somewhere safe,” he said.
“So maybe somebody else does too.”
Salvatore funded it.
They named it Elena House.
Gabriel cried at the opening.
Sofia saw him.
She did not tell Rosa.
That counted as love.
Bianca began therapy.
Nobody had expected that.
Least of all Bianca.
“I am paying a woman two hundred dollars an hour to tell me my family lies too much.”
Salvatore raised an eyebrow.
“Worth every dollar.”
She threw a napkin at him.
Victor wrote from prison.
At first to Bianca.
Then Salvatore.
Eventually Matteo.
Salvatore almost refused to give the boy the letter.
Matteo asked for it.
Victor wrote:
I do not expect forgiveness. I only wanted you to know Elena tried to save me once. Years ago, she told me that being abandoned did not give me the right to become the person who abandons others. I hated her for it because she was right.
Matteo read it twice.
He wrote back.
I don’t forgive you yet.
Victor replied:
That is fair.
Months passed.
No attacks.
No hidden ledgers.
No killers in alleys.
Normal problems replaced extraordinary ones.
Sofia applied to college.
Matteo broke his wrist falling from a bicycle after Gabriel specifically told him not to ride down the steep hill.
Gabriel nearly fainted in the emergency room.
Matteo found that hilarious.
Salvatore did not.
Then one evening, a woman arrived at Elena House.
Thirty-five.
Blonde hair cut unevenly.
Bruise along her jaw.
Holding the hand of a five-year-old girl.
Her name was Claire Donovan.
Her husband had ties to one of the old Moretti crews.
He had been arrested.
She had nowhere safe to go.
Salvatore met her in the foyer.
The little girl hid behind her mother.
Salvatore crouched.
“You’re safe here.”
The child stared at his scarred knuckles.
“Are you a bad man?”
Claire went pale.
“Emma!”
Salvatore almost laughed.
Matteo, standing on the stairs, answered for him.
“Sometimes.”
Everyone looked at him.
Matteo continued.
“But he’s getting better.”
Salvatore nodded.
“Accurate.”
Claire smiled despite herself.
It was small.
Tired.
Beautiful.
Something unfamiliar moved inside Salvatore.
He ignored it.
For two weeks.
Claire volunteered in Elena House’s kitchen while sorting legal issues.
She challenged Salvatore constantly.
“You scare people.”
“I’m standing.”
“You stand aggressively.”
“That’s not a thing.”
“It is when you do it.”
Matteo loved her.
Emma adored Rosa.
Bianca observed everything with dangerous interest.
Salvatore threatened to move out if she started matchmaking.
She said nothing.
Which was worse.
One night Claire found Salvatore on the back terrace.
“You really changed all this?”
“Matteo did.”
“He’s a child.”
“Children notice problems adults normalize.”
Claire looked toward the windows.
“He trusts you.”
“I hope so.”
“You don’t know?”
“Trust isn’t something you declare.”
She studied him.
“You sound like someone taught you that.”
“He did.”
Inside, Matteo watched from behind the curtain.
Gabriel caught him.
“Stop spying.”
“I’m observing.”
“Same thing.”
“Do you think Salvatore likes her?”
Gabriel smiled.
“Yes.”
“Does he know?”
“No.”
“Adults are exhausting.”
Weeks later, Claire’s husband was released on bail.
He came to Elena House angry.
Drunk.
Demanding Claire.
Salvatore met him at the gate.
No weapons.
No threats.
“You don’t own her.”
“She’s my wife.”
“She’s a person.”
“You think because people still whisper your name you can take my family?”
“No.”
Salvatore looked toward Claire standing behind the gate.
“She chooses.”
Claire stepped forward.
“I’m not going with you.”
Her husband raised his hand.
Carmine moved.
Salvatore stopped him.
Claire did not flinch.
The man lowered it.
Police arrested him minutes later for violating the protective order.
Matteo watched.
Later he asked Salvatore, “Why didn’t you hit him?”
“Would that have helped Claire?”
“Maybe.”
“No.”
Salvatore looked at the boy.
“Being able to hurt someone doesn’t mean you should.”
Matteo smiled faintly.
“You’re learning.”
May you like
Salvatore laughed.
“I am.”
