Chapter 2 - Behind Closed Mahogany Doors

The silence in the library felt thicker than blood. Outside the rain beat relentlessly against the reinforced bay windows, casting watery shadows across rows of ancient leather-bound books.

Lorenzo stood motionless, staring down at the woman who had vanished from his life like smoke after a catastrophic night in Milan three years ago. Back then, she wasn't a meek maid in an oversized gray uniform scrubbing floors with bruised knees. She had been Elena Vance—an exquisite, firebrand art conservator who had crossed into his dark world by accident, stolen his stone heart, and disappeared overnight after an explosion leveled his family's private estate.

He had buried an empty casket for her. He had waged a bloody, six-month campaign of retribution across two continents, burning down rival empires because he believed they had murdered his woman.

And now, she was kneeling on his floor, holding a child whose eyes carried the exact gold-flecked hue of his own mother’s portrait.

"Stand up, Elena," Lorenzo ordered softly.

Elena didn't move. Her fingers gripped Mia’s tiny waist, her maternal instinct roaring through her veins. "You promised me once, Lorenzo. Before the fire... before the bombs. You told me if I ever asked you for one mercy, you would grant it."

Lorenzo walked behind his massive desk. He leaned his palms flat against the green leather blotter, his knuckles white with suppressed adrenaline. "You think you are in a position to negotiate mercy after faking your death? After hiding my blood from me?"

"You don't understand the danger we were in!" Elena cried out, her voice finally breaking. She stood up, pulling Mia onto her hip. The little girl rested her head against Elena’s collarbone, her large eyes darting back and forth between the two adults, sensing the electric charge in the air. "Donatello told me you were dead! He showed me the execution orders with your signature! He said your own syndicate marked me because of what I found in the gallery ledgers!"

At the mention of Donatello’s name, Lorenzo went utterly rigid.

Donatello was his cousin. His right hand. The man who sat at his dinner table, managed the syndicate's Swiss bank accounts, and carried the Moretti crest on his signet ring.

"Donatello told you that?" Lorenzo’s tone turned deceptively calm, the kind of quiet that precedes a hurricane.

"He escorted me to the docks," Elena whispered, her chest heaving as memories of cold salt water and sirens came rushing back. "He told me if I ever returned to the United States, if I ever spoke your name aloud, your hitmen would hunt down my family. I had nowhere else to go. I didn't even know I was pregnant until two months later, hiding in a rat-infested studio in Boston."

Lorenzo closed his eyes for three long seconds. In his mind, three years of puzzle pieces clicked into place with horrifying, lethal precision. Donatello had been the one who handled the search efforts. Donatello was the one who presented dental records from the burned villa. Donatello had systematically pushed for an aggressive war with the Santoro cartel to divert resources away from the internal investigation.

Mia whimpered softly, frightened by the heavy silence.

Instantly, Lorenzo opened his eyes. The murderous rage directed at his traitorous cousin evaporated the moment he looked at his daughter. He pushed away from the desk and walked slowly toward them.

"Give her to me," Lorenzo murmured.

Elena recoiled an inch, her maternal terror flaring. "Lorenzo..."

"I swear on my mother’s soul, Elena, I will not drop her," he said, his voice cracking with a fierce, desperate plea. "Please. Let me hold my daughter."

Trembling, Elena loosened her grip.

Lorenzo carefully reached out his powerful arms. As he lifted Mia, his immense strength seemed to falter against her tiny weight. He held the little girl against his broad chest, supporting her back with a hand that had broken bones without a second thought.

Mia didn't cry. Instead, she giggled, her tiny fingers reaching for the heavy silver chain around Lorenzo’s neck. Tangled beneath his dark silk tie was a small silver locket—a relic from his youth.

"Shiny," Mia whispered, tapping the pendant.

A single tear—hot, bitter, and laden with three years of stolen time—slipped down Lorenzo Moretti’s cheek. He pressed his face into the soft curls of the child’s hair, breathing in the scent of baby soap and lavender.

"You are safe now, piccola mia," Lorenzo whispered against her temple, his voice thick with unshakeable resolve. "No one touches you. No one touches your mother. Anyone who tries will burn."

He raised his head and locked eyes with Elena. The look on his face was no longer just of a shocked father; it was the chilling, calculated focus of a Don preparing for war.

"Call Dr. Rossi," Lorenzo commanded, reaching into his pocket and tossing a gold-plated burner phone onto the desk. "We run the DNA test within the hour. Not for me—I already know whose blood runs in her veins. We run it for the council. Because tonight, the house of Moretti introduces its sole heir."

Before Elena could answer, the red emergency intercom on his desk let out three sharp, shrieking beeps.

Marco’s frantic voice crackled through the speaker: "Boss! Donatello just breached the outer gates with twenty armed men. He’s claiming you’ve compromised the family—and he’s demanding custody of the maid and the child!"
