Chapter 7 - Hostage to the Syndicate

The gunshot sounded like thunder inside the enclosed ballroom.
In a fraction of a second—faster than human thought—Lorenzo moved. He lunged across the corner of the table, shielding Elena and Mia with his own massive body. The heavy 12-gauge slug ripped through the back of Lorenzo’s tuxedo jacket, tearing through the fabric and grazing the thick muscle of his left shoulder blade, showering Elena’s emerald silk gown with fine red droplets.
Mia let out a sharp, terrified shriek, burying her face into Elena’s neck.
"Get down!" Lorenzo roared, drawing his Glock with his right hand and returning fire in one fluid, deadly motion.
Two of Donatello’s mercenaries dropped instantly, bullets catching them between the eyes before they could cycle their weapons. The ballroom instantly devolved into pure, unadulterated chaos. Capos scrambled for cover beneath the heavy mahogany tables, their personal bodyguards drawing concealed weapons and creating a crossfire that shattered crystal chandeliers, showering the room in a blizzard of falling glass.
"Marco! Secure the exits!" Lorenzo commanded, his teeth gritted against the burning agony tearing across his back.
Elena was on the floor, curled tightly over Mia, covering the child’s ears as the roar of automatic gunfire vibrated the floorboards. "Lorenzo! You’re bleeding!"
"I’m fine! Crawl to the kitchen corridor! Move!"
Donatello, realizing his surprise strike had failed to eliminate Lorenzo, panicked. He knew he had seconds before the estate’s outer perimeter guards encircled the ballroom. Through the drifting smoke and plaster dust, his eyes locked onto Elena as she crawled toward the side exit, clutching Mia.
"Cover me!" Donatello screamed to his remaining men.
He charged through the smoke like a rabid dog. Before Marco could intercept him, Donatello reached the side archway, lunging forward and grabbing Elena by her auburn hair.
Elena screamed, kicking backward with all her strength. "Let go of her! Lorenzo!"
Mia was torn from Elena’s arms as Donatello’s heavy combat boot kicked Elena hard in the ribs, sending her sprawling across the broken glass. Donatello hooked his forearm violently around Mia’s tiny neck, pulling the three-year-old up against his chest as a human shield, pressing the cold steel barrel of his revolver directly to her temple.
"STOP! ALL OF YOU, CEASE FIRE OR I BLOW HER BRAINS ACROSS THIS FLOOR!" Donatello shrieked at the top of his lungs.
The gunfire died instantly.
The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the whimpering sobs of a three-year-old child and the heavy drip of blood onto the floor.
Lorenzo stepped out from behind a shattered marble column. Blood soaked the entire left side of his crisp white shirt, running down his sleeve and dripping from his fingertips. But his face—his face was devoid of pain, devoid of fear, devoid of any recognizable human emotion.
It was the face of an executioner.
"Let her go, Donatello," Lorenzo whispered. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a demonic vibration that made the mercenaries behind Donatello take an involuntary half-step backward.
"Drop your gun, Lorenzo!" Donatello screamed, his finger twitching visibly on the trigger. "Drop it or she dies! Throw it across the floor! Now!"
Mia was crying uncontrollably, her tiny hands clawing at Donatello’s thick forearm. "Daddy! Daddy, help! It hurts!"
Hearing that word—Daddy—tore through Lorenzo like a lightning strike. Every vein in his neck bulged against his collar. Slowly, agonizingly, Lorenzo bent his knees and laid his customized Glock onto the glass-strewn floor, kicking it away.
"You have me," Lorenzo said, opening his empty hands. "Take me. Let the child go. She has nothing to do with this."
Donatello backed slowly toward the reinforced service doors leading out to the rear driveway, dragging Mia with him. "You think I’m an idiot? She’s my ticket out of this state. If a single car follows me, I dump her body in the bay!"
With a violent shove, Donatello backed through the service door, his men firing a final suppressing volley into the ceiling before slamming the heavy metal fire door and throwing the external deadbolt.
"LORENZO!" Elena screamed, dragging herself up from the floor, glass cutting into her palms, her emerald dress ruined and stained with soot. "HE HAS HER! HE HAS OUR BABY!"
Lorenzo didn't panic. He walked over to Elena, pulled her up into his arms, and pressed his forehead against hers. His blue-gray eyes were burning with an apocalyptic fury.
"He won't make it to the highway," Lorenzo promised her, his voice low, steady, and terrifyingly cold. "I put a GPS tracker inside the silver locket she’s wearing around her neck."

He reached to his waist, pulled a secondary combat blade from his boot, and looked back at Marco.
"Arm the gunships," Lorenzo commanded. "Tonight, we leave no survivors."
