PART 2: THE VEIL LIFTED

A quiet chaos began to ripple through the room. To avoid attracting the attention of the remaining guests, Mr. and Mrs. Vance immediately ordered security to escort Elena and Lily into the private, soundproof study on the second floor. The heavy oak door clicked shut, completely cutting off the muffled music outside, leaving an suffocating, tense silence.
Lily continued to sniffle, her little hands gripping the hem of Elena’s uniform, refusing to let go. Elena remained on her knees, cradling the child, her tears flowing unconditionally.
– "Speak! Who are you? Why did you approach my daughter and teach her that song?!" Mr. Vance demanded, his voice low as he tried to maintain control, though his ragged breathing betrayed his inner panic.
Elena lifted her tear-drenched face, staring directly into the eyes of the wealthy couple. Her voice choked, but it carried a bone-deep resentment: – "I didn’t teach her. That is a lullaby that I wrote myself. And this child... she is not your daughter. She is the baby you stole from my arms four years ago!"
Hearing this, Mrs. Vance trembled violently, taking a sharp step back and throwing a manicured hand over her mouth to suppress a scream. Her eyes darted frantically around the room in absolute horror.
Four years ago, the Vances faced the threat of losing their massive family inheritance if they failed to produce an heir. Right at that critical time, their newborn daughter tragically died of a sudden illness. To cover up the truth, they used their immense wealth and political influence to orchestrate a kidnapping at a poor hospital in the suburbs, bringing home a healthy baby girl and claiming her as their biological child. That child was Lily.
Elena was the tragic mother from that night. For four long years, she had wandered from town to town, taking menial jobs with only one purpose: to find her missing child. The "Little star" melody was the only lullaby she had sung to her baby during their few brief days in the hospital. She never imagined that the sacred maternal bond would etch that melody so deeply into Lily’s subconscious that hearing it tonight would awaken the child's buried memories.
– "You’re lying! Security, throw this crazy woman out!" Mrs. Vance shrieked, desperately trying to mask her guilt with sheer rage.

But Mr. Vance raised a hand to stop his wife. He understood perfectly that if Elena caused a scene outside, the Vance family’s reputation and empire would crumble instantly. He stepped closer to Elena, lowering his voice to a chilling, calculated tone: – "Even if what you say is true... look at yourself. A penniless servant. What can you offer her? Here, Lily lives like a princess, wearing silk and pearls. If she walks out that door with you, she’s just another vagrant child. If you truly love her, keep your mouth shut and disappear. I will give you enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life."
Elena looked at Lily, who was clinging to her for dear life, and then at the implicit fortune Mr. Vance was offering. Her heart shattered. His words were monstrously cruel, yet they struck a mother's greatest fear: the inability to provide a good life for her child. She looked at her baby girl, torn apart by an agonizing choice. Should she selfishly reclaim her daughter, or let her continue living this gilded, artificial lie?
