PART 3: THE UNTHINKABLE TWIST

The study fell into a terrifying, dead silence. Lily looked up with wide, innocent eyes, using her tiny fingers to wipe the tears from Elena’s cheek: – "Mommy, don't cry. I want to go with you. I don't want to stay here anymore. They are always so scary..."
Seeing the child’s fierce devotion, the maternal instinct inside Elena flared to life. She wiped her tears and stood tall. She locked eyes with Mr. and Mrs. Vance, her gaze no longer reflecting the meekness of a servant, but the unbreakable fierce resolve of a mother protecting her cub. – "I don’t want your money. I am taking my daughter. The truth will be told."
Mrs. Vance turned to her husband in sheer panic. Mr. Vance let out a slow sigh, his eyes darkening with murderous intent. He walked calmly over to his desk, pulled open a drawer, and retrieved a small, sleek revolver. – "I gave you a choice, Elena. But you chose death. A maid caught stealing and shot in fear... that makes for a very clean headline."
Mrs. Vance turned her face away, unable to watch. Lily screamed in terror, burying her face into Elena's legs. Elena closed her eyes, shielding her daughter with her own body, bracing for the worst.
Click. The cold sound of the gun being cocked echoed through the room.
But Mr. Vance’s barrel wasn’t pointed at Elena.
In one horrifying fraction of a second, he spun on his heel and aimed the gun directly at the chest of... Mrs. Vance!
Bang!
The deafening blast shattered the room. Mrs. Vance’s eyes widened in absolute shock, staring at her husband in utter betrayal before collapsing heavily onto the floor, her blood pooling rapidly over her shimmering, diamond-encrusted gown. Elena shrieked in horror, instantly covering Lily’s eyes.
Mr. Vance calmly lowered the smoking gun, his face devoid of an ounce of remorse. He glanced down at his wife's corpse, then turned back to Elena with a dark, twisted smile.
– "Did you honestly think four years ago, that foolish woman could have orchestrated a flawless hospital kidnapping all on her own without leaving a single trace?" Mr. Vance asked, his voice chillingly casual.
Elena was paralyzed with shock, her voice cracking: – "What... what are you talking about?"
– "I mean..." Mr. Vance stepped closer to Elena, reaching out to gently stroke Lily’s blonde hair, "...She always believed she chose this child. But in reality, I was the one who chose Lily. I was the one who hired the kidnappers to take her from you."
Elena’s eyes widened to their absolute limits as a truth far more monstrous than the kidnapping began to unravel.
– "Four years ago, I discovered my wife was barren, yet she faked a pregnancy to secure her hold on my family fortune. To punish her, and to ensure I had an heir who actually carried my bloodline... I went searching." Mr. Vance leaned in close to Elena’s ear, his voice dropping to a sinister whisper. "Elena... have you forgotten? Five years ago, in that very ballroom, you were also a waitress. And that night, after I had too much to drink... we had an arrangement. Lily is not my wife's child. She is biologically mine... and YOURS."
Elena staggered backward, her mind spinning into chaos as the fractured, repressed memories of a dark night from five years ago came crashing back. It turned out Elena’s employment at the estate was no coincidence, and the kidnapping years ago was not a random twist of fate. Everything—from the child’s disappearance, to Elena finding her way into this mansion, to the bloody death of Mrs. Vance tonight—was a calculated move on a chessboard masterfully controlled by the man standing right in front of her.
– "Now, the only obstacle is dead," Mr. Vance smiled ruthlessly, extending his hand toward Elena. "Call the police. Tell them my wife lost her mind when she discovered the truth, tried to kill you, and I shot her in self-defense. After that, you will become the legitimate matriarch of the Vance estate, and Lily will have both her parents. Make your choice, Elena: rule this kingdom by my side, or become the next casualty."

Elena stared at his blood-stained hand, then at the lifeless body of Mrs. Vance, and finally down at the trembling little girl in her arms. She realized with chilling certainty that she hadn't escaped a trap at all—she had just walked right into a far more vicious, inescapable nightmare.
The real story... was just beginning.
