Chapter 3 - The Little Genius Behind the Screen

I leaned against the doorframe, my voice barely a whisper. “Maya. Was that Aunt Monique on the phone?”
Maya finally stopped typing, lowered her tablet, and turned to look at me with eyes far too ancient and sharp for a fourth-grader. “She sounded mad, didn’t she? People who steal usually hate it when the lockbox gets changed.”
“Maya, what did you do?” I asked, stepping into the room and staring at the complex array of open windows, proxy servers, and remote desktop connections glowing on her screen. “Did you... did you get the money back?”
“Not just the money, Mom,” Maya said smoothly, sliding off the bed and walking over to her desk chair. She spun the monitor around so I could see a massive flow chart connecting our Atlanta IP address to a secure, multi-layered financial gateway routed through three different European servers and straight into Monique and Chad’s newly opened Dubai corporate shell accounts. “Aunt Monique forgot a very basic rule about digital money: digital trails are permanent, and smart contracts can be reverse-engineered if you know how to write a custom override script.”
She tapped the screen, bringing up a glowing ledger. “When she initiated the transfer, her banking app automatically cached her primary device token, her secondary user credentials, and Chad’s auxiliary login portal. All I had to do was write a localized penetration script, bypass their two-factor authentication using an automated session-hijack loop, and redirect the funds back into our account—with a small surcharge for emotional distress, of course.”
I stared at her, my jaw practically touching the floor. My daughter hadn't just recovered our savings; she had completely neutralized two adult grifters from her bedroom using advanced networking principles I barely understood as a data analyst.

“Does this mean... the rent is paid?” I asked weakly.
Maya grinned, her youthful innocence flashing back for a split second before she turned back to her console. “Mom, the rent is paid for the next ten years. But we’re not done yet. Aunt Monique and her boyfriend left a digital footprint across five different international financial platforms. And I’m about to show the world exactly where they got that money.”
