Chapter 10 - The Price of a Child

The textile mill smelled of rust and rain.

Claire entered alone.

At least Robert believed she was alone.

Police tactical units waited three blocks away.

Grant was inside their command vehicle.

Claire wore a hidden microphone beneath her coat.

She carried a leather case.

Robert stood in the center of the abandoned factory.

Richard Vale beside him.

Margaret was tied to a chair.

Leo sat twenty feet away.

Unhurt.

Terrified.

“Claire!”

She almost ran to him.

Robert raised a gun.

“Stay.”

Claire stopped.

“Let him go.”

“Sign first.”

Richard placed documents on a metal table.

Claire recognized them.

Renunciation of beneficiary rights.

Transfer of voting authority.

Grant’s empire in exchange for Leo.

Claire picked up the pen.

Robert smiled.

“You understand now.”

“No.”

He frowned.

Claire looked around the ruined mill.

“I understand Caroline.”

Robert’s smile disappeared.

“She came here too, didn’t she?”

Margaret raised her head.

Robert turned sharply toward her.

Claire continued.

“This was where she confronted you.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Sign.”

Claire ignored him.

“You didn’t plan to kill Caroline that night. You planned to frighten her.”

Robert’s eyes narrowed.

“But she wouldn’t give you the evidence.”

“Claire,” Margaret whispered.

“She fought you.”

Claire watched Robert.

“And Richard chased her.”

Richard reached for Claire.

She stepped away.

“Don’t.”

Robert said calmly:

“Enough.”

Claire opened the case.

Inside was the ledger.

Robert’s expression changed.

“Caroline’s book.”

“Yes.”

“Give it to me.”

“Leo first.”

“No.”

“Then burn your empire yourself.”

Claire removed a lighter.

Richard panicked.

“Wait.”

Robert raised the gun.

“Put it down.”

Claire held the flame near the ledger.

“Leo walks to Margaret.”

Robert’s hand tightened.

Claire remained still.

Finally:

“Richard.”

Richard untied Leo.

The child ran to Margaret.

Claire exhaled.

“Now Margaret.”

“No.”

“That wasn’t our deal.”

“We didn’t have a deal.”

Robert smiled.

“You are still naïve.”

Claire smiled back.

“So are you.”

Police sirens erupted outside.

Richard spun.

Robert fired at the ceiling.

Chaos exploded.

Claire dropped.

Margaret pulled Leo beneath the chair.

Police shouted through loudspeakers.

Robert grabbed Claire.

Gun against her neck.

“Back!”

Officers froze.

Richard ran toward a side exit.

Two officers tackled him.

Robert dragged Claire backward.

“You stupid girl.”

“You lost.”

“I built all of this.”

“You built a prison.”

He pulled Claire toward a stairwell.

Grant appeared above them.

Robert stopped.

“Son.”

Grant held no weapon.

“Let her go.”

Robert laughed.

“For the maid?”

“For my family.”

Something changed in Claire’s chest.

Robert pressed the gun harder.

“You always were weak.”

Grant descended one step.

“You killed Caroline.”

“She betrayed us.”

“She exposed you.”

“She would have destroyed the Ashford name.”

Grant looked around the decaying factory.

“You did that yourself.”

Robert’s face twisted.

For the first time, the controlled old man disappeared.

“I gave you everything!”

“You gave me fear.”

Grant took another step.

“You taught me money mattered more than people.”

Another.

“You taught Mother silence was survival.”

Another.

“You taught Caroline truth was dangerous.”

Another.

“And you almost taught Leo the same thing.”

Robert aimed at Grant.

That was his mistake.

Claire twisted away.

The gun fired.

Grant fell.

“Grant!”

Police surged forward.

Robert was tackled.

Claire ran.

Grant lay on the stairs.

Blood spread across his shirt.

She dropped beside him.

“No, no, no.”

His eyes opened.

“Leo?”

“He’s safe.”

Grant smiled weakly.

“Good.”

“Stay with me.”

Paramedics rushed in.

Claire held his hand all the way to the ambulance.

Leo cried for his father.

Margaret cried beside him.

Richard Vale was led away in handcuffs.

Robert passed Claire.

He looked at her with hatred.

“You think this ends because they arrested me?”

Claire stood.

“It ended when Leo chose someone you considered beneath you.”

Robert stared.

Claire’s voice remained quiet.

“You just didn’t know it yet.”

The ambulance doors closed.

Claire climbed inside.

Grant’s blood covered her hands.

The monitor began screaming.

A paramedic shouted.

May you like

“We’re losing him.”

And for the second time in her life, Claire found herself begging the universe not to take away a family just as she had finally found one.
