Chapter 11 - The Heart That Stopped

Grant’s heart stopped for forty-seven seconds.

Claire learned that number because she counted every second.

She stood outside the trauma room with Leo asleep against her chest.

Margaret sat beside her.

Neither woman spoke.

At 3:18 a.m., a surgeon emerged.

“He’s alive.”

Claire nearly collapsed.

The bullet had passed through Grant’s shoulder and damaged an artery.

He would recover.

Weeks, possibly months.

But he would recover.

Margaret covered her face.

Claire kissed Leo’s hair.

“Daddy okay?”

“He’s going to be okay.”

Leo nodded as if Claire’s answer could make it true.

Maybe that was what trust was.

The next morning, the story exploded across every major newspaper.

ROBERT ASHFORD ALIVE.

BILLIONAIRE PATRIARCH ARRESTED.

DECADES-OLD DEATH INVESTIGATION REOPENED.

Richard Vale was charged with conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping and obstruction.

Robert faced charges connected to Caroline’s death, kidnapping, arson and attempted murder.

Margaret voluntarily gave prosecutors a complete statement.

Her lawyers warned that she could face charges for her role in suppressing evidence.

She signed anyway.

“I’ve spent thirty years choosing fear,” she told Claire.

“I’m finished.”

Claire did not forgive her.

Not yet.

But she respected the choice.

Three days later Grant woke fully.

Claire sat beside him.

His first word was:

“Leo?”

“Watching cartoons with Margaret.”

His second question:

“You?”

“I’m here.”

Grant smiled.

“Apparently.”

Claire laughed through tears.

Then he reached for her hand.

“Don’t leave.”

She froze.

Those were the words Leo had spoken in the ballroom.

Grant noticed.

“Too much?”

“Maybe.”

“Okay.”

But he did not release her until she gently moved her hand.

Weeks passed.

Grant came home.

Not Hawthorne Hall.

The penthouse.

The mansion remained under investigation.

Claire technically no longer worked as his housekeeper.

The press had discovered her identity.

Claire Bennett.

Caroline Ashford’s half-sister.

Trust beneficiary.

Overnight, strangers called her heiress.

She hated it.

One morning Evelyn Hart brought financial documents.

“Your shares are worth approximately four hundred and eighty million dollars.”

Claire stared at her coffee.

“I preferred when I had sixty-three dollars.”

Evelyn laughed.

“I doubt that.”

“I understood sixty-three dollars.”

“What do you want to do?”

Claire looked at Leo playing nearby.

Then she knew.

St. Agnes.

Foster children.

Aging-out programs.

Legal assistance.

Emergency housing.

Everything she had needed when she was eighteen.

“I want the money to mean something.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Caroline would approve.”

Claire swallowed.

That afternoon Grant found her on the balcony.

“You’re staying.”

It was not a question.

Claire looked at him.

“I’m buying an apartment.”

His face fell slightly.

“Oh.”

“Five minutes away.”

“Oh.”

She smiled.

“You look disappointed.”

“I’m trying to look mature.”

“You’re failing.”

“Gunshot recovery affects facial control.”

She laughed.

Grant looked at her differently.

Not employer.

Not rescuer.

Man.

Woman.

Two people who had survived the same storm from opposite shores.

“I owe you my son’s life,” he said.

“No.”

“You saved him.”

“And you saved me.”

Grant shook his head.

“You saved yourself long before I met you.”

Claire looked away.

He continued.

“I don’t want gratitude to become confused with something else.”

Her pulse changed.

“What something else?”

Grant smiled faintly.

“I’m trying very hard not to say it.”

“Then don’t.”

“Okay.”

He walked back inside.

Claire watched him go.

Then whispered:

“Coward.”

Grant stopped.

Turned.

“What?”

She smiled.

“Nothing.”

But that night another problem arrived.

Evelyn called.

Robert had requested a private meeting with Claire.

He claimed he possessed one final piece of information about Caroline.

Claire almost refused.

Then Evelyn said:

“He says Caroline had a daughter.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“What?”

“A child born before she married Grant.”

Claire looked toward Leo.

If Robert was telling the truth, somewhere there might be another person Caroline had lost.

Another secret.

Another child erased by the Ashford family.

Claire closed her eyes.

The story was not over.
