Chapter 12 - Betrayal in Dress Whites

"...and so, with deep regret," General Whitfield boomed into the microphone, his chest adorned with three rows of campaign ribbons, his silver hair gleaming beneath the stage spotlights, "the Department of the Navy has officially determined that Chief Petty Officer Dole’s actions constituted gross dereliction of duty, resulting in the catastrophic failure of Operation Sentry-Fire."

He paused, lowering his head in a practiced theatrical gesture of mournful solemnity for the rolling television cameras.

"We must accept that even among our elite, there are those whose moral courage fails when—"

The massive thirty-foot LED projection screen behind Whitfield suddenly flickered violently.

The image of Marcus Dole’s forged financial documents vanished, replaced by high-definition, thermal drone footage bearing the classified crimson seal: TOP SECRET // EYES ONLY // SPECIAL ACCESS REQUIRED.

The auditorium fell into stunned, breathless silence.

Marcus Dole’s voice exploded through the high-wattage PA speakers with concussive force, echoing off the wood-paneled walls:

"Command, this is Viper One-Actual! We have two wounded! Laser designator is on our position! Wave off! WAVE OFF—!"

Whitfield froze, his mouth half-open, his face instantly draining of all color until he looked like a corpse standing behind the presidential-style seal of the lectern.

Then came Whitfield’s own voice through the auditorium speakers, crisp, cold, and unmistakably distinct:

"Package is inbound. Danger close. Execute the scrub."

The footage showed the Hellfire missile detonating squarely in the dry creek bed, the thermal bloom consuming Marcus's fireteam in front of two hundred military commanders and civilian journalists.

"Cut the feed!" Whitfield roared, lunging away from the lectern toward the backstage technician's booth, his composure shattering into panicked hysteria. "Cut the power! Arrest the technician! That is classified material! Turn off the damn cameras!"

"Don't touch that switch," my voice rang out, clear and cutting through the stunned auditorium.

The heavy wooden double doors leading from the backstage area slammed open, crashing against the drywall with the sound of a gunshot.

I walked out onto the elevated stage in soaking-wet utility fatigues, salt-encrusted and streaked with sand, my bare hands at my sides.

Beside me walked Ares and Zeus, their eyes sweeping the room, holding the front row of high-ranking admirals in absolute, terrified paralysis.

And in the center walked Thor.

The massive Malinois didn't look at the crowd. He didn't look at the television cameras swinging wildly toward the stage.

His eyes locked onto General Daniel Whitfield.
