Chapter 7 - The Caldwell Mother

Emma's first reaction was disbelief.
“Evelyn Caldwell?”
Matteo nodded.
“Richard's mother killed my father?”
“I said she caused his death.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“No.”
Matteo smiled faintly.
“You're smarter than the men interviewing you.”
Emma ignored him.
“Explain.”
“Ask Evelyn.”
“I'm asking you.”
Matteo paced slowly beneath the warehouse light.
“On the night David died, Jonathan Caldwell asked him to come to the house.”
“Why?”
“Jonathan had finally understood what Martin was doing.”
“Martin was stealing.”
“Martin was doing much more than stealing.”
“What?”
“Selling Caldwell's shipping intelligence.”
Emma frowned.
“To whom?”
“Anyone who paid.”
“Competitors?”
“Sometimes.”
Matteo's expression darkened.
“Sometimes people moving cargo they preferred customs agents not to inspect.”
Emma understood.
“Smuggling.”
“Yes.”
“And you helped.”
Matteo didn't deny it.
“Why?”
“Money first.”
“At least you're honest.”
“Eventually survival.”
Emma stared.
Matteo continued.
“I tried to leave.”
“Because Luca was investigating?”
“Because Luca was going to die.”
Emma remembered David's video.
Matteo betrayed him to save his life.
“You staged your death.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Martin knew Luca was getting close. As long as I remained alive, Luca would keep investigating.”
“So you died.”
“I made Luca believe the trail ended with me.”
Emma felt disgust and pity at the same time.
“You let your mother bury an empty coffin.”
Pain flashed across Matteo's face.
“Yes.”
“Did she know?”
“No.”
Emma let that sit between them.
“Tell me about my father.”
Matteo's expression changed.
“David was better than all of us.”
Emma almost hated him for saying it.
“He discovered Martin's network. Jonathan confronted Martin privately.”
“What happened?”
“Martin denied everything.”
“Then?”
“Jonathan asked David to bring the evidence to his house.”
Emma's chest tightened.
“The night he died.”
“Yes.”
Matteo looked toward the dark warehouse doors.
“I was nearby.”
“Why?”
“Martin ordered me to retrieve the files.”
“You went to steal from my father.”
“Yes.”
Emma wanted to hit him.
She didn't.
“What happened inside?”
“Jonathan poured drinks.”
“Martin poisoned them?”
Matteo looked surprised.
“You're ahead of me.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
“Both?”
“Jonathan and David.”
Emma's breath caught.
“Why Jonathan?”
“Because Jonathan had decided to report everything to federal investigators.”
Emma slowly nodded.
“And Evelyn?”
“Came home unexpectedly.”
“What did she see?”
“Her husband collapsed.”
“David?”
“Still conscious.”
Emma felt sick.
“Then why didn't she call an ambulance?”
“She did.”
Matteo paused.
“For Jonathan.”
Emma stared.
“What?”
“Martin told Evelyn that David had poisoned her husband.”
“No.”
“She believed him.”
“No.”
“Jonathan was barely breathing. David was confused. Martin said David had been blackmailing them.”
Emma shook her head repeatedly.
“Stop.”
“Evelyn ordered the household staff to help Jonathan first.”
“My father?”
“Was left in the study.”
Emma covered her mouth.
“He was alive?”
“Yes.”
Tears blurred her vision.
“For how long?”
“Long enough.”
She turned away.
Matteo's voice softened.
“By the time someone returned, he had stopped breathing.”
Emma wiped her face angrily.
“So Evelyn killed him.”
“She made a choice based on a lie.”
“A choice that killed him.”
“Yes.”
“Why cover it up?”
“Because when Jonathan woke in the hospital, he remembered enough to know Martin had done something.”
“So why not expose Martin?”
Matteo laughed bitterly.
“Because Martin had spent years collecting evidence of every questionable decision Jonathan Caldwell had ever made.”
“Blackmail.”
“Yes.”
“Jonathan protected the company.”
“He protected the family name.”
Emma stared at him.
“And my father paid for it.”
“Yes.”
She hated the calmness of his answer.
Emma stepped closer.
“Why tell me this?”
“Because Martin is trying to kill us both.”
“Why you?”
“Because I have evidence.”
“What evidence?”
Matteo smiled.
“The only surviving copy of what David recorded that night.”
Emma stopped.
“My father recorded it?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
“Safe.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Then this meeting is over.”
She turned.
Matteo grabbed her wrist.
Emma spun back.
“Let go.”
He did.
“You don't understand.”
“Then make me.”
“Martin isn't the person who ordered the fire last night.”
Emma froze.
“Who did?”
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes.”
“You're supposed to be the criminal mastermind.”
“That story has been convenient for several people.”
Emma studied him.
For the first time, she wondered if Matteo wasn't merely lying.
Maybe he was also afraid.
“Who is above Martin?”
Matteo looked toward the ceiling.
“Someone who inherited Jonathan's network after he died.”
“Richard?”
“No.”
“Victoria?”
“No.”
“Trevor?”
Matteo almost laughed.
“No.”
“Then who?”
His gaze returned to hers.
“Find out who authorized Samuel Price's employment file.”
“You did.”
“No.”
“You were Samuel Price.”
“Yes.”
“Then—”
“I didn't create the identity.”
Emma's stomach tightened.
“Someone inside Caldwell Meridian gave it to you.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because three years ago, that person offered me a deal.”
“What deal?”
“My silence in exchange for access.”
“To what?”
Matteo looked at her.
“The man who killed our father.”
Emma frowned.
“Our?”
Matteo went still.
Emma stared.
“You said our father.”
He closed his eyes.
A mistake.
Tiny.
But real.
Emma's heartbeat changed.
“You and Luca's father?”
Matteo said nothing.
Emma suddenly remembered the photograph of David and Luca.
The way her father had trusted him.
The hidden past.
Her grandmother's grocery store.
Luca being placed there.
She whispered, “What aren't you telling me?”
Matteo stepped backward.
Before he could answer, a gunshot shattered the overhead light.
Darkness swallowed the warehouse.
Matteo shoved Emma behind a concrete pillar.
Another shot struck metal.
“Stay down!”
A vehicle engine roared outside.
Matteo fired back.
Emma crawled toward cover.
Then headlights flooded the warehouse.
Luca jumped from an SUV.
“Emma!”
Matteo shouted, “Get her out!”
Luca froze.
The brothers saw each other face to face for the first time in eleven years.
For one heartbeat, the shooting stopped mattering.
Luca whispered:
“You're alive.”
Matteo stared at him.
“I’m sorry.”
Then another bullet hit the pillar between them.
The reunion ended.
But Emma had heard Matteo's mistake.
Our father.
