Chapter 11 - The Breach

The rain began to fall as Adrian hobbled out into the darkness behind the motor pool, each strike of his rubber-tipped crutches splashing through oily puddles on the broken asphalt.
Behind him, Kennel Row rose like a gray fortress against the dawn sky.
Suddenly, the base sirens began to wail—a deafening, mechanical shriek that shattered the morning silence. Flashing amber beacons lit up the foggy perimeter walls. The voice of the automated emergency broadcast system crackled through the installation's loudspeakers:
“Attention all personnel. Security breach in Sector Four. Unauthorized access to restricted asset facility. Security teams respond.”
Adrian didn't slow down. Gritting his teeth against the searing agony tearing through his hip, he lunged forward, throwing his weight against the heavy side entrance of Kennel Bay Nine.
Inside, the scene was on the verge of bloodshed.
Vance stood with his sidearm drawn, pointing the barrel straight at Owen Maddox’s chest. Owen stood with his back pressed against the iron latch of cell four, his fists clenched, refusing to budge. On the floor lay the shattered plastic pieces of the lethal syringe, stepped on and crushed beneath Owen’s combat boots.
"Step aside, Specialist!" Vance roared over the wailing sirens. "I will fire on you! You are interfering with a lawful military execution!"
"Then pull the trigger, Major!" Owen shouted back. "Because I'm not letting you kill him!"
The heavy steel door slammed open against the interior wall with a thunderous crash.
Adrian stood in the opening, soaked with rain, his canvas jacket clinging to his chest, his eyes burning with the cold fury of a battlefield commander.
"Vance!" Adrian’s voice sliced through the chaos like an artillery shell.
Inside the iron cage, the giant German Shepherd went silent for a single, terrifying instant.
Then, the dog went berserk.
Smelling the rain, the blood, and the unmistakable scent of the only man he had ever loved, Viper launched his seventy-five-pound body directly into the welded steel mesh. The entire cage frame groaned under the impact. The latch, weakened by hours of relentless battering, buckled with a violent snap of sheared steel.
Viper broke through.
He didn't run for the exit. He didn't flee into the shadows.
The dog hit the concrete floor at full sprint, clearing twenty feet in the blink of an eye. He didn't touch Owen. He bypassed the tech with the catch-pole entirely.
Viper leaped straight toward Major Vance.
Vance gasped, raising his service pistol to fire. But Adrian was already moving.
Dropping his left crutch, Adrian threw himself forward, grabbing the barrel of Vance's weapon with his bare hand and shoving it toward the concrete ceiling just as the gun discharged with an ear-splitting CRACK!
The bullet shattered a fluorescent light tube overhead, raining sparks down into the aisle.
In the next fraction of a second, Viper struck Vance’s chest like a battering ram, knocking the major flat onto his back. The dog stood straddling the officer’s chest, his massive paws pinning Vance's shoulders to the wet concrete floor, his razor-sharp jaws inches from the man's throat, emitting a terrifying, guttural roar that rattled the walls of the entire bay.
"Viper! Heel!" Adrian commanded.
The roar stopped instantly.
The dog froze, his fangs hovering a millimeter from Vance's jugular vein. Viper didn't back down, but his ears turned back toward Adrian's voice, his powerful chest heaving with hot breath.
Vance lay pinned to the ground, his eyes wide with white-hot terror, his face completely drained of color.

"Call him off..." Vance whined, barely able to breathe. "Call him off, Morales... please..."
"He obeys me, Major," Adrian said, standing over them, resting his weight on his remaining crutch, breathing hard. "Not you. Not your orders. And not your lies."
