Chapter 14 - Stripped of Command

The gavel fell with the finality of a closing tomb.
"By unanimous decision of this board of inquiry," General Vance declared, standing at full attention behind the center dais, "all charges against Specialist Owen Maddox are hereby dismissed with prejudice. His conduct in preventing the unlawful destruction of military evidence and protecting a decorated combat asset is commended."
Owen, standing beside the back row of seats, closed his eyes and let out a long, silent breath.
"Major Julian Vance," the General continued, his gaze shifting to his nephew who stood flanked by military police in the holding box, "is stripped of his administrative duties, reduced in rank to second lieutenant pending criminal trial, and remanded for court-martial proceedings on charges of conspiracy and theft of government funds."
The General paused, turning his cold stare onto Colonel Marcus Sterling.
"Colonel Sterling. The evidence of grand larceny, treasonous misappropriation of defense property, and the intentional falsification of casualty manifests to conceal financial crimes is overwhelming. You are relieved of command effective immediately. You will be held without bond at the regional confinement facility until your general court-martial convenes."
Two MPs stepped up on either side of Sterling, hauling him out of the defense chair. As they turned him toward the rear exit, Sterling caught sight of Adrian standing by the center aisle, with Viper sitting rigidly by his side.
For a moment, the disgraced former colonel’s eyes flickered with venom. "You think you won something, Morales?" Sterling sneered under his breath. "You’re still a broken cripple living on government handouts."
Viper didn't bark. The massive shepherd simply stepped forward, his ears pinning back, his golden eyes fixing Sterling with a stare so steady, so utterly fearless, that Sterling flinched and hurried through the exit doors under the escort’s iron grip.
When the courtroom began to clear, General Vance stepped down from the dais. He approached Adrian, stopping three paces away. The General’s eyes dropped to the scarred German Shepherd sitting quietly on the floor, then rose to meet Adrian’s gaze.
"Staff Sergeant Morales," the General said quietly.
Adrian snapped his heels together and delivered a crisp, immaculate salute.
General Vance returned the salute, holding it for three full seconds before lowering his hand.
"The United States Army owes you an apology that no medal can ever truly fulfill," the General said, his voice dropping to a personal, solemn tone. "What happened to you and your partner in that valley was an act of cowardice and greed disguised as operational authority. It tarnishes every man and woman who wears this uniform."
"The uniform didn't do this, General," Adrian replied steadily. "Two corrupt men did. My partner kept me alive in the dirt. All I wanted was to finish the job and bring him home."

The General nodded once, a faint trace of warmth softening his weathered face.
"Tomorrow morning at zero-nine-hundred, there will be a full garrison formation on the main parade deck. I expect you to be there, Sergeant. In dress uniform."
