Chapter 4 - The War Begins

Thirty minutes later, Detective Vance walked into the ER waiting area. He was a tall, sharp-featured officer in his late 40s with tired eyes that had seen too much. Behind him walked Taylor.

Taylor looked frantic, her mascara slightly smeared, but as soon as she saw me sitting in the plastic chair outside Lily's room, her eyes flashed with pure anger.

"Mark! Where is she?!" Taylor demanded, stepping toward me. "How dare you take her! How dare you make up these sick lies about my mother!"

"Keep your voice down," I said, standing up to block her path. "She's sleeping. Her body temperature dropped to 94 degrees, Taylor. Your mother almost killed our daughter."

"That's a complete lie!" Taylor snapped, though her voice lacked conviction. "Mom told me what happened! You snuck into the garage, staged the whole thing, and scared Lily into agreeing with you just so you could get revenge for the divorce!"

I looked at Taylor, searching her face for any sign of the compassionate woman I had married eight years ago. There was nothing left—only the brainwashed echo of Evelyn's manipulative control.

"Do you really believe that, Taylor?" I asked quietly. "You think I would put our daughter in a freezer just to frame your mother?"

"Mr. Miller, Mrs. Miller, calm down," Detective Vance interrupted, stepping between us. He turned to me. "I spoke with the attending doctor. She confirmed the hypothermia diagnosis and the frostbite risks. CPS has officially opened a case file."

Taylor’s face went pale. "What? CPS? Detective, this is a misunderstanding! My mother is a respected member of the historical society! She serves on local charity boards!"

"A title doesn't prevent someone from being a monster, Taylor," I said coldly.

Vance pulled out a small notebook. "I inspected the garage before coming here, Mr. Miller. The chest freezer was running, but Mrs. Miller claims it was locked with a padlock and only used for storage."

"It wasn't locked tonight," I retorted. "And if you check the interior handle or the frost lining, you'll find Lily's fingerprints."

"We're sending a forensics unit to inspect the garage tomorrow morning," Vance said. Then he turned to look through the glass at Lily. "However, given the conflicting statements and the active CPS report, temporary emergency custody must be determined tonight."

Taylor immediately stepped forward. "She comes home with me, obviously! I have primary physical custody under the divorce decree!"

"Not tonight, Mrs. Miller," Vance said firmly. "Since the alleged incident occurred at your residence under your mother's supervision, CPS has issued a temporary safety hold. Lily will remain in the hospital overnight under police guard. Neither parent can remove her until the emergency hearing tomorrow afternoon."

"This is ridiculous!" Taylor shouted, her phone already in her hand. "I’m calling my mother's attorney right now!"

She stormed down the hallway, her heels clicking angrily against the floorboards.

I looked at Vance. "Thank you, Detective."

Vance looked at me with a heavy expression. "Don't thank me yet, Mark. Evelyn Vance-Carter isn't just a wealthy woman in this county—her family practically built half the business district. She hired Jonathan Reed, the most ruthless family law attorney in the state. If you don't have ironclad evidence by tomorrow's hearing, she will turn this entire narrative against you."

"I know," I murmured.

After Vance left, I sat back down on the hard plastic chair outside Lily's room. The war had officially begun. I knew Evelyn wouldn't just defend herself; she would try to destroy me completely—my reputation, my job, and my right to ever see my daughter again.

My phone screen lit up with a text from an unknown number.

You should have taken your boxes and left, Mark. Now you lose everything.

I stared at the screen, my grip tightening around the device until my knuckles turned white. Evelyn was signaling her move.

She thought her money and high-powered lawyers could bury the truth. But she didn't realize one thing: I wasn't the scared, compliant son-in-law I used to be.

I pulled up my contacts and dialed a number I hadn't called in five years—a former investigative journalist turned private attorney who specialized in tearing down powerful people.

"Harrison?" I said into the receiver as soon as he answered. "It's Mark Miller. I need your help. And it's going to be a bloodbath."
