Chapter 7 - The Unannounced Visit

The morning sun over El Paso County was bright, but it offered no warmth.
At precisely 9:00 AM, two vehicles pulled up to the curb of Aspen Ridge Lane. The first was an unmarked Ford Explorer carrying Detective Vance and a second uniformed officer. The second was a silver sedan belonging to Sarah Jenkins, the lead Child Protective Services investigator assigned to Lily's case.
Harrison and I parked down the street, keeping our distance as planned. My pulse hammered in my throat like a drum beat.
"Remember," Harrison warned, laying a hand on my arm. "We let the authorities do their job first. Vance has the warrant to inspect the garage and search for secondary evidence. When the timing is right, we step in with the footage."
I nodded, my eyes fixed on the front door of my former home.
Detective Vance and Sarah Jenkins walked up the driveway together. Vance knocked firmly on the heavy oak door.
A moment later, Taylor opened it. She wore a silk robe, a mug of coffee in her hand, her hair slightly messy. Surprise flickered across her face, quickly followed by irritation.
"Detective Vance? Ms. Jenkins?" Taylor said, standing in the doorway without stepping aside. "What is this? The judge made his ruling yesterday. Lily is resting."
"Mrs. Miller," Detective Vance said calmly, holding up a official folder. "As part of the active child endangerment investigation opened by CPS, we are conducting a mandatory, unannounced welfare check and site inspection. We need to examine the child and inspect the garage premises immediately."
Before Taylor could answer, Evelyn stepped into the foyer behind her, draped in an elegant cashmere cardigan. Her eyes narrowed as she saw the officers.
"This is harassment," Evelyn declared smoothly, stepping past Taylor to address Vance directly. "We were in court less than twenty-four hours ago. My attorney warned us you might attempt to intimidate us, Detective."
"Mrs. Carter," Sarah Jenkins interrupted, pulling a notepad from her bag. "Under state law, CPS has the authority to inspect any residence where a reported incident of severe physical abuse occurred within 72 hours. Please step aside, or you will be charged with obstructing an active investigation."
Evelyn’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening. "Of course. We have nothing to hide. Taylor, show Ms. Jenkins to Lily’s room. Detective, the garage is right through that side door."
I watched from Harrison’s car as Vance and his partner stepped into the garage while the CPS officer went upstairs with Taylor.
"Now," Harrison said, unbuckling his seatbelt. "It's time."
We got out of the car and walked up the driveway. As we reached the open garage, Detective Vance was standing near the large chest freezer. He was inspecting a heavy silver padlock hanging from the front latch.
"See, Detective?" Evelyn’s voice rang out from the garage doorway. She had followed him inside, her arms crossed calmly over her chest. "It’s locked. It has always been locked. My ex-son-in-law is a lunatic who made up a story because he couldn't accept losing his family."
"Is that so, Evelyn?"
I stepped into the garage, my voice echoing off the concrete walls.
Evelyn spun around, her eyes flashing with pure hatred. "Mark! You are violating a court order! Get off my property before I have you arrested!"
"He’s here as my guest, Mrs. Carter," Harrison said smoothly, stepping in beside me and pulling a tablet out of his leather briefcase. "And he isn't violating anything. We are here to deliver supplemental evidence to Detective Vance."
Detective Vance turned around, his brow furrowed. "Mr. Vance, what is this?"
"Detective," Harrison said, turning the tablet screen so both Vance and Evelyn could see it clearly. "Yesterday in court, Mrs. Carter swore under oath that the chest freezer was padlocked shut on Thursday night. She claimed Mark fabricated the entire event."
Evelyn scoffed, turning her head away. "I don't have to listen to this circus—"
"You might want to look at this, Mrs. Carter," Harrison interrupted, his voice dropping into a deadly calm tone. "Because old Mr. Henderson across the street has a 4K night-vision security camera mounted on his porch. And it recorded every single second of Thursday night."
May you like
Evelyn froze.
The color drained from her face so fast it was like someone had wiped it away with an eraser.
