Chapter 10 - Back to the Night We Were Born

The old hospital had been abandoned for eighteen years.
Its maternity wing still smelled faintly of smoke.
Ernesto entered first.
Valeria followed despite his objections.
So did Sofia and Alessandra.
At the end of the corridor, Isabella sat tied to a chair.
Camila stood behind her.
“You brought all three.”
“Let her go,” Alessandra said.
Camila smiled.
“I did all of this for you.”
“No.”
“For the family you would inherit.”
“I don’t want it.”
“You don’t understand power.”
“I understand exactly what it did to you.”
Camila’s face hardened.
She revealed the final truth.
Alejandro had never ordered the girls killed.
He had wanted them hidden until the feud ended.
Camila altered his instructions.
Mateo followed her.
The murders.
The disappearances.
The succession scheme.
Camila had manipulated everyone.
Even Mateo.
“You turned your own brother into a monster,” Ernesto said.
“No. Mateo was always a monster. I simply gave him direction.”
Alessandra stepped closer.
“And me?”
“I tried to make you strong.”
“You made me afraid.”
“Fear is useful.”
“So is love.”
Camila laughed.
“That word destroyed this family.”
“No,” Isabella said.
“Control destroyed it.”
Camila turned toward her.
That moment gave Alessandra the opening.
She lunged.
The weapon fired.
Ernesto shouted.
Isabella fell.
Sofia screamed.
But the bullet had struck the chair.
Alessandra wrestled Camila to the ground.
Federal agents rushed inside.
Within seconds, Camila was restrained.
She stared up at Alessandra.
“You could have had everything.”
Alessandra looked down at her.
“I already found what you spent your whole life trying to destroy.”
“What?”
“My family.”
Camila was taken away.
Outside, dawn appeared over San Aurelio.
Nobody celebrated.
Too much had happened.
Too many people had been hurt.
But the killing was over.
Or so they thought.
Three days later, investigators discovered Camila’s final instruction.
If she was arrested, every document connecting legitimate Vega businesses to criminal assets would automatically be released.
Banks froze accounts.
Companies collapsed.
Employees panicked.
Thousands of innocent workers faced losing their jobs.
Ernesto had a choice.
Fight the government.
Hide the assets.
Or surrender everything.
His attorneys recommended war.
He fired them.
Then he called a press conference.
Sofia stood beside him.
Ernesto faced the cameras.
“My family built wealth through legitimate work and through crimes.”
Reporters shouted questions.
He continued.
“I cannot change what happened. But I can stop lying about it.”
He announced the transfer of all questionable assets to a restitution fund.
Victims would be compensated.
Legitimate businesses would be placed under independent management.
Ernesto would cooperate fully.
Gabriel did the same the next day.
The old families were dismantling themselves.
Some called them weak.
Others called them traitors.
Valeria called it overdue.
Then federal prosecutors announced both men would face charges.
Sofia found Ernesto packing.
“You’re leaving?”
“For court.”
“You could run.”
“Yes.”
“Will you?”
He looked at her.
“No.”
She hugged him.
He froze.
Then held her.
“I missed your entire childhood.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have.”
“You can’t fix twenty years.”
“I know.”
“But you can be here for the next twenty.”
Ernesto closed his eyes.
That was more mercy than he believed he deserved.
Across town, Gabriel received a similar goodbye from Valeria.
“You’re really staying?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Even if you go to prison?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
He laughed.
“You have an unusual definition of support.”
“You need consequences.”
“I know.”
“And then you need to come home.”
Gabriel stopped smiling.
“Home?”
Valeria shrugged.
“We’re still figuring out the Dad thing.”
He hugged her.
May you like
For the first time in twenty years, both families entered court without buying a judge, threatening a witness, or hiding the truth.
And for the first time, their daughters watched them choose responsibility over power.
