Chapter 9 - The Assassin at the Family Table

The threat came from inside.
That was the part Marco knew.
Not the identity.
Alejandro Vega had built his contingency system decades earlier.
One sleeper.
One payment.
One command.
If Mateo failed, the sleeper would eliminate competing heirs.
Sofia and Valeria were moved to a secure estate.
Alessandra refused protection.
“I’m the beneficiary. They won’t kill me.”
“That makes you bait,” Sofia said.
“Exactly.”
The plan worked.
At dinner that evening, a longtime Vega employee named Tomas entered carrying coffee.
Alessandra noticed his hand shaking.
“Put it down.”
He froze.
Ernesto looked up.
“Tomas?”
The man began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
He dropped the tray.
Then reached inside his jacket.
Security tackled him.
But he wasn’t reaching for a weapon.
He pulled out a photograph.
His family.
“My wife. My sons.”
He looked at Ernesto.
“They have them.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
The sleeper wasn’t Tomas.
Tomas was being forced.
A phone on the table rang.
Alessandra answered.
A distorted voice said:
“Midnight. Bring the three heirs to Vega Cemetery.”
Then the caller hung up.
Ernesto recognized the phrase.
Three heirs.
Not two.
Whoever was behind this knew everything.
At midnight, they went to the cemetery.
Not alone.
Investigators watched from hidden positions.
The Vega mausoleum stood open.
Inside waited a woman.
Ernesto stopped.
“Camila?”
Camila Vega.
His older sister.
Seventy years old.
Elegant.
Respected.
The family peacemaker.
She smiled sadly.
“Hello, little brother.”
Ernesto looked devastated.
“You?”
“Father never trusted either of you.”
“Mateo murdered people.”
“So did you.”
“And you?”
“I preserved the family.”
Sofia stepped forward.
“By killing us?”
Camila studied her.
“You really do have Ernesto’s eyes.”
“You don’t have to do this.”
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Camila smiled.
“I’ve been doing this since before you were born.”
She had financed the hospital operation.
Helped Mateo disappear.
Bribed officials.
Destroyed records.
Even Alejandro hadn’t controlled everything.
Camila had.
“Why?” Valeria asked.
“Because men like Ernesto and Gabriel confuse love with weakness.”
Camila looked at Alessandra.
“You were supposed to be different.”
“I am.”
“Yes.”
Camila’s smile disappeared.
“That is the problem.”
She wanted an heir without compassion.
Mateo had failed to create one.
Alessandra had inherited Isabella’s conscience.
Camila considered that unforgivable.
Federal agents moved in.
But Camila had anticipated them.
Explosions erupted outside the cemetery.
Smoke filled the mausoleum.
Camila escaped through a hidden passage.
Before disappearing, she called back:
“Ask Isabella who really started the hospital fire.”
Ernesto turned.
Isabella’s face revealed everything.
“You?”
She shook her head.
But she knew.
Lucia.
Valeria’s mother.
Lucia had started the fire.
Not to kill anyone.
To trigger the evacuation.
It was supposed to create enough chaos to move the babies.
But the flames spread.
Two nurses died.
Lucia had lived with the guilt for twenty years.
Valeria confronted her.
“You told me everyone else’s sins.”
“I was ashamed.”
“That doesn’t make yours disappear.”
“I know.”
Lucia turned herself in the next morning.
The fire had long passed the statute of limitations for several offenses, but she voluntarily testified about everything.
Valeria visited her afterward.
“Are you angry?”
“Yes.”
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
Lucia cried.
Valeria took her hand.
“I’m learning those can exist together.”
Meanwhile, Camila disappeared.
Her accounts vanished.
Her properties emptied.
But Alessandra understood her.
“Camila doesn’t run.”
“Then where is she?” Sofia asked.
“She finishes things.”
The final target wasn’t the girls.
It was Isabella.
Camila blamed her for corrupting Alessandra with compassion.
They rushed to Isabella’s house.
Too late.
The front door was open.
A broken glass lay on the floor.
Ernesto shouted her name.
No answer.
Then Sofia found a note.
ONE MOTHER CREATED THIS MESS.
ONE MOTHER WILL END IT.
Beneath the words was an address.
The ruins of St. Catherine’s Hospital.
May you like
The place where all three girls had been born.
Camila was taking the story back to where it started.
