Chapter 11 - The Chemo Ward Stand-Off

By 8:30 PM, the snow was falling heavily across downtown Chicago, coating the streets in slush.
At Continental Bank & Trust on LaSalle Street, Julian and federal agents accessed Box 814 under an emergency warrant. Inside, exactly as Evelyn had described, lay Arthur Pendelton’s private journal—hundreds of handwritten pages cataloging fifteen years of institutional rot, shell corporation routing numbers, and the specific names of six probate judges who had accepted kickbacks to strip elderly and dying patients of their estates.
Julian’s phone buzzed with an emergency alert from the hospital.
It was Deputy Miller. The background audio was filled with shouting, stomping boots, and the high-decibel squeal of an alarm.
"Judge Vance! We have a situation on the seventh floor!" Miller shouted over the receiver. "A private security tactical team—they’re claiming to be private bailiffs executing a contempt seizure from the Illinois Appellate Court! They’ve barricaded the elevators!"
"Hold your position, Miller!" Julian roared, leaping back into the federal SUV. "Do not let them into Room 714!"
"They’re cutting the auxiliary power lines to the oncology ward wing, Judge! They're trying to force an evacuation to snatch the girl and Clara!"
Julian turned to the federal driver. "Lights and sirens. Break every red light between here and Streeterville."
Ten minutes later, the SUV slid to a halt in front of Northwestern Memorial's emergency ambulance bay. Julian kicked open the door and sprinted into the building, his heavy coat flying open, federal agents trailing right behind him.
The seventh floor was bathed in eerie, flashing red emergency lights. The primary power had indeed been cut; the heavy fire doors had sealed shut, and the backup generator was humming with an uneven, strained vibration.
Standing outside Clara’s room were six men dressed in black tactical uniforms, carrying sidearms and zip-tie restraints. Leading them was none other than Marcus Gonzalo’s senior law partner, Vance Sterling Jr., flanked by a crooked appellate marshal.
They had their guns unholstered, pointed directly at Deputy Miller and two federal marshals who were shielding Clara’s door with their bodies.
Inside the room, Alba’s terrified screams could be heard through the heavy wood.
"Step aside, Deputy!" the marshal screamed. "We have an appellate extraction warrant! This patient is being moved to a state secure facility!"
"You take one more step, and I will put a bullet through your badge!" Miller shouted back, his service pistol leveled at the marshal's chest.
"Stand down!" Julian’s voice boomed down the corridor like a thunderclap.
The entire hallway froze.
Julian strode through the flashing red lights, holding Arthur Pendelton’s black leather ledger above his head like a flaming torch.
"Vance Sterling Jr.," Julian said, his voice cold, steady, and terrifyingly clear. "Your father didn't die of heart failure. He was poisoned with synthetic digoxin in a private hospice care clinic your firm owned. And right here, on page eighty-four of your partner Arthur’s ledger, is the wire transfer showing the two-million-dollar payment you made to the attending physician to falsify the autopsy."
Vance Sterling Jr. stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes bulged in absolute horror. "That’s... that’s a lie. That's impossible!"
"The FBI has already raided your home in Lake Forest," Julian said, taking three slow, deliberate steps forward until his chest was inches from the crooked marshal’s gun barrel. "The offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands have been frozen. Every man in this hallway has exactly ten seconds to drop their weapons and surrender, or you will spend the rest of your natural lives in ADX Florence for domestic terrorism and capital murder."
The six private guards looked at each other. The certainty in Julian's voice was absolute. He wasn't bluffing; he was an executioner reading a final decree.

One by one, the private guards dropped their weapons to the floor with a series of heavy metallic clatters.
Vance Sterling Jr. collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the floor, his hands covering his face in utter defeat.
