Chapter 9 - The Ambush at Courtroom 4

Julian stared at the screen, his jaw set so tight his teeth ached. He didn't hesitate. He stepped out of the bathroom, pocketed the micro-transmitter, and immediately hit the emergency nurse call button above Clara’s bed.
Dr. Sarah Lin, the attending oncologist, hurried into the room with two junior nurses. Her face was flushed with frustration.
"Judge Vance, I don't know what’s going on," Dr. Lin said, holding a tablet displaying a red administrative block. "The regional health network’s board just overrode my clinical authority. They've flagged your daughter’s account for fraud and ordered her transferred to Cook County General immediately. They're telling me to pull the lines."
"They're not pulling anything, Doctor," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute, undeniable command. He pulled out his federal credential card alongside the emergency court order he had drafted in the car. "Northwestern Memorial is now a federal crime scene under Title Eighteen of the United States Code. Marcus Gonzalo and Chief Justice Arthur Pendelton have been indicted for health care fraud and extortion. This floor is under federal protection."
Before Dr. Lin could answer, the door swung open.
Four men in dark business suits strode into the room. They weren't doctors, and they weren't cops. Leading them was Eleanor Vance-Sterling, Richard Sterling's eldest daughter and the prime beneficiary behind Gonzalo’s shell trust.
Eleanor was fifty years old, draped in a bespoke cashmere coat, her face a mask of cold, predatory entitlement. Behind her stood two private security guards and a court process server holding a leather folder.
"Julian," Eleanor said, casting a disdainful glance at the hospital bed where Clara was struggling to keep her eyes open. "You always were so melodramatic. Did you really think cutting the head off our legal counsel would stop a fifty-million-dollar corporate restructuring?"
"Get out of this room, Eleanor," Julian warned, stepping between her and Clara's bed.
"We have an emergency ex parte order signed by Judge Hastings at four-thirty," the process server announced, stepping forward to thrust the folder at Julian. "Petition for Immediate Child Protective Custody. Based on the mother’s terminal medical incapacity and the grandfather’s pending federal corruption scrutiny, Alba Vance is declared a ward of the state. These officers are here to take custody of the minor child."
Alba gasped, burying her face into Evelyn's skirt, trembling violently.
"You're using Child Protective Services as an extortion weapon?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with a fury he could barely contain.
"We're using whatever tools are on the shelf, Julian," Eleanor whispered, leaning in close so only he could hear. "Alba’s signature—via her appointed guardian—is the only thing required to release the seventy-million-dollar medical patent to our family company. Clara refused to sign. Now, you will surrender the girl to our approved foster placement, or Clara gets wheeled out onto the street in the rain."
Julian looked down at the court order. The ink was still wet. Judge Hastings—another of Pendelton’s longtime political cronies on the family court bench.
"Hastings signed this without a hearing?" Julian said softly.
"He signed it because we run this county, Julian," Eleanor sneered. "Now step aside, or my guards will remove the child by force."
Julian looked at Alba, whose small hands were clutching her grandmother's fingers so tightly her knuckles were white. Then he looked at Clara, who was weakly reaching out from the bed, whispering her daughter's name through cracked, dry lips.
Julian straightened his posture. At sixty-two years old, the veteran Marine who had survived trial by fire long before he ever wore a judicial robe came roaring back to life.
"Deputy Miller," Julian spoke clearly toward the hospital hallway.
Deputy Miller stepped into the doorway, followed by four heavily armed Cook County tactical deputies with shotguns slung across their chests.
"Yes, Your Honor?" Miller said.
"Arrest these four individuals for felony witness tampering, child endangerment, and obstruction of federal justice," Julian commanded coldly. "And if anyone reaches for their pockets, treat them as hostile combatants."

Eleanor’s sneer vanished instantly. "You can't do this! I am an executive of Sterling Global!"
"You're an inmate in Cook County Jail, Eleanor," Julian spat. "Take them away."
