Chapter 10 - Evelyn’s Safe Deposit Box

The rain turned to sleet as Julian and Evelyn sat inside the back of a black unmarked federal transport van parked three blocks from the hospital. Alba was asleep on Evelyn’s lap, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, exhausted by the day’s relentless terror.

Clara’s immunotherapy had finally been restarted under direct federal injunction, supervised by Dr. Lin and guarded by two federal marshals outside Room 714. But Julian knew they were operating on borrowed time. The corporate entity behind the Sterling trust was a hydra; cutting off two heads only provoked the remaining executives to burn the evidence.

Evelyn reached into her leather purse and pulled out a small, tarnished brass key attached to an engraved silver tag.

The tag read: Continental Bank & Trust – Box 814.

"What is this, Evelyn?" Julian asked, staring at the brass key.

"Nine years ago, the night before I packed my bags and left you, I didn't just leave a note on the kitchen counter, Julian," Evelyn said, her eyes glistening in the dim green light of the van’s dashboard. "I went to Arthur Pendelton’s private townhouse in Gold Coast."

Julian turned to her, stunned. "You went to Arthur?"

"I thought he was your friend. I thought he would protect us from the threats," Evelyn whispered, a tear tracing the lines of her cheek. "I sat in his study and told him someone was threatening Clara with a rifle on her campus. And while Arthur was pouring me a glass of water in the kitchen, his desk phone rang. It was Marcus Gonzalo. Arthur had put the call on speakerphone in the other room, not realizing I could hear."

Julian’s chest grew tight. "What did they say?"

"Gonzalo laughed," Evelyn whispered. "He told Arthur, 'The photo worked. The wife is terrified. Julian will be so broken by the divorce he'll sign whatever probate assignments we put in front of him.' That was the moment I realized your best friend was the architect of our nightmare."

Julian felt a cold chill run through his veins. "Why didn't you come back to me?"

"Because Arthur walked back in with a glass of water, looked me dead in the eye, and told me that if I ever told you what I heard, Clara would never make it to her twenty-fourth birthday," Evelyn said, her voice shaking with nine years of buried agony. "So I played the role they wrote for me. I took the settlement. I took Clara. But before I left town, I broke into Arthur’s study safe."

Julian stared at her in sheer disbelief. "You stole from the Chief Justice?"

"I was married to a legendary trial attorney for twenty-one years, Julian," Evelyn said with a faint, fierce smile. "I know that without physical evidence, the truth is just a rumor. Inside Box 814 is Arthur’s personal offshore ledger from 2015 to 2017. Every bank account, every bribe paid to hospital billing directors, every forged judicial assignment. He kept it in a black leather notebook as life insurance against his own partners."

Julian reached out and closed his fingers over hers, holding the brass key tightly. For the first time in nine long, bitter years, the wall between them collapsed completely.

"Let's go finish this," Julian said.
