Chapter 2 - Locker 214

North Station smelled of rain, iron, and burnt coffee. Ethan reached locker 214 at midnight and found Nora waiting beside it.
"You followed me," he said.
"I know where Julian kept his secrets."
"You knew about this?"
"Not the locker. The habit. He trusted metal more than people."
Ethan held up the key. "Why did you sign the petition?"
Nora looked toward the empty platform. "Open it first. Hate me afterward."
The key turned with a dry click. Inside lay a black ledger, a flash drive, and an envelope marked FOR ETHAN AND NORA TOGETHER.
Ethan laughed without humor. "He still believed we could stand in the same room."
"Barely."
Nora opened the envelope. Julian's letter contained only three lines: Adrian found the river account. Marcus found Adrian. The signatures are false.
Ethan flipped through the ledger. Payments moved from the Harrow Foundation into shell charities, then into an account called River Glass.
"Thirty-two million dollars," he said. "Marcus didn't just frame me. He emptied the foundation for years."
Nora pointed to a page. "These initials. C.H."
"Charles Harrow. Your uncle."
"Or Claire Henson, the old finance director. Or anyone Marcus wanted us to suspect."
"You still defend him?"
"I defend facts. I learned that after I destroyed our marriage with assumptions."
Ethan stopped. "Say it clearly."
Nora's voice cracked. "Marcus showed me a recording after Adrian died. Your voice said, 'If he talks, stop him before the bridge.' He said you ordered the crash."
"I said, 'If he walks, stop him before the bridge.' Adrian was drunk and trying to drive. Marcus cut one word and built your betrayal around it."
"I didn't know."
"You never asked."
"He sent me photographs of Lily asleep in her bedroom. He said if I warned you, the next accident would involve a child seat."
Ethan's anger faltered, but did not disappear.
"So you testified that I stole the money."
"I thought prison would keep you alive. I thought hating me would keep you away from Lily."
"You let her believe I abandoned her."
"I told her you loved her every night."
"And every morning you obeyed the man who threatened her."
Nora wiped her eyes. "Yes. That is the part I cannot forgive either."
Ethan inserted the flash drive into his laptop. One video file opened: grainy footage from Adrian's dashboard camera. Adrian argued with someone outside the car.
Marcus's voice came through the speakers. "Give me Julian's copy."
Adrian answered, "You won't touch Ethan or my sister."
A second man stepped into frame, but his face remained outside the camera's view. A hand wearing a square black signet ring reached beneath the dashboard.
Nora whispered, "Uncle Charles wears that ring."
The station lights went out.
"Close the laptop," Ethan said.
Footsteps rushed from the stairwell. A bottle shattered against the locker, and flames climbed the metal doors.
Nora grabbed the ledger. "This way!"
They ran through the service corridor as smoke filled the platform. Behind them, someone shouted into a phone.
Outside, Ethan's mobile rang. Evelyn's name flashed on the screen.
"Where is Lily?" Evelyn demanded.
"With you."
"No. Marcus said you sent a driver for her. Nora's signature was on the release form."
Nora snatched the phone. "I signed nothing."
A photograph arrived while she spoke. Lily sat in the back of a dark car, clutching Maple. Marcus's message appeared beneath it.
Bring the ledger to the old textile mill before dawn, or the next photograph will be taken at the bottom of the river.

Ethan looked at Nora.
"Now," she said, gripping the scorched ledger, "we stop obeying him."
