Chapter 3 - The Price of One Life

The old Harrow textile mill stood beside the river like a burned-out cathedral. Ethan and Nora found Evelyn waiting at the locked gate with a pistol in one hand.

"You called her?" Ethan asked.

Nora shook her head.

Evelyn lifted her chin. "Marcus called me. He wants all three of us frightened enough to make mistakes."

"You brought a gun."

"I am eighty-one, not helpless."

Ethan held out Julian's letter. "He knew Marcus killed Adrian."

Evelyn read it once, then folded it with trembling fingers.

"I knew your records were forged," she said.

Nora stared at her. "Since when?"

"Six weeks ago. Julian told me before the stroke took his speech."

Ethan stepped closer. "You kept calling me a thief."

"Marcus controlled the foundation accounts, the board, and half the local police through donations. Julian told me to pretend ignorance until he could move the evidence."

"And Lily?"

"I filed for custody because Marcus demanded it. I thought keeping her inside my house would keep her visible."

Nora's voice rose. "You let him speak to her alone."

"I made the same mistake you did. I confused surrender with protection."

A loudspeaker crackled above the gate.

"Touching," Marcus said. "Three generations of Harrow women discovering their consciences before breakfast."

"Where is Lily?" Ethan shouted.

A light came on in the upper office. Lily stood behind dirty glass, crying but upright. Marcus appeared beside her.

"The ledger on the loading platform," he said. "Then the child walks out."

Evelyn raised the pistol.

"Shoot the window and you may hit her," Marcus said. "You were always better with balance sheets than consequences."

Nora took the ledger from Ethan. "I'll carry it."

"No."

"He expects you to fight. He expects Mother to threaten. He still thinks I obey."

Ethan caught her wrist. "I already lost two years with Lily. I will not lose you to prove a point."

"This isn't a point. It is my turn to choose courage before fear."

She crossed the yard and placed the ledger on the platform. Marcus sent a masked guard down to retrieve it.

Ethan whispered to Evelyn, "When Lily moves, cover the stairs."

"With pleasure."

The guard opened the ledger. Ethan had replaced the center pages with blank paper, but Marcus saw the deception immediately on a security monitor.

"Wrong choice," his voice boomed.

An alarm screamed. Fuel ignited along the lower floor, forming a wall of fire between the office and the stairs.

Lily pounded the glass. "Daddy!"

Nora ran toward the building.

Ethan tackled the guard, took his key card, and followed. Smoke rolled through the corridor. In the office, Marcus had vanished through a rear passage, leaving Lily locked to a radiator with a plastic restraint.

"I knew you'd come," she sobbed.

"Always."

Nora found a metal cutter, but the ceiling above them cracked.

Evelyn shouted from below, "The roof is going!"

Ethan saw a fireproof cabinet beside the desk. Through its open door he glimpsed the original River Glass contracts, Adrian's brake report, and a phone labeled M. VALE.

Nora followed his gaze. "That is everything."

Another beam fell, blocking the cabinet.

"Daddy, please!"

Ethan cut Lily free and lifted her.

Nora seized his sleeve. "The evidence—"

"Evidence can burn. She cannot."

They escaped through a loading chute seconds before the office collapsed. Evelyn pulled Lily into her arms, weeping openly for the first time Ethan had ever seen.

Across the river, a car sped away. Marcus had the real ledger, and the mill had swallowed the documents.

Nora sank onto the wet gravel. "We lost."

Ethan looked at Maple, blackened with soot but still clutched beneath Lily's arm. A tiny red light blinked behind one glass eye.

"No," he said. "Julian never trusted one hiding place."
