Chapter 4 - The Confession at Harrow House

Inside Maple's glass eye, Ethan found a memory card and a transmitter. The card held copies of every document destroyed in the mill, but one file mattered more than the rest: a scheduled message from Julian.

"Marcus watches accounts," Julian said on the screen. "He watches telephones. He does not watch a child's toy."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Julian continued. "The man beside Marcus on the night Adrian died wore the Harrow signet ring. I cannot prove which Harrow man wore it. Make him believe the proof survived, and he will identify himself."

Nora paused the video. "Charles will run if we accuse him."

"Then we do not accuse him," Ethan said. "We invite him home."

That evening, Harrow House filled again, not with birthday guests but with board members, police, and reporters Evelyn claimed she had summoned to announce her resignation.

Charles arrived in a black coat, his square signet ring visible on his right hand.

"What is this theater?" he asked.

Evelyn poured tea. "A family habit. We perform respectability while the walls rot."

Marcus entered through the side door with two officers.

"Mr. Cole is under arrest for kidnapping and destruction of property," he announced.

Ethan remained beside the fireplace. "Interesting. The warrant was signed ten minutes before the mill fire was reported."

Marcus smiled. "Efficient policing."

Nora stepped forward with a sealed envelope. "Julian made three copies. This one contains Adrian's full recording and the River Glass authorization page."

Charles looked at Marcus too quickly.

Marcus said, "Give it to the officers."

"Which officers?" Evelyn asked. "The ones you paid through the Civic Safety Fund?"

One of the men reached inside his jacket. Real detectives emerged from the library and disarmed them.

Marcus backed toward the door.

Ethan raised his phone. "The house security system is streaming to every reporter outside. Speak carefully."

"You have no evidence."

"Then why did you burn the station locker?"

"I did not."

"Why did you threaten Lily?"

"A necessary pressure. No child was harmed."

Nora's face hardened. "You chained her inside a burning building."

"The fire spread faster than planned."

The room fell silent.

Ethan said, "And Adrian's brakes? Did they fail faster than planned too?"

Marcus looked toward Charles.

"Do not drag me into this," Charles snapped.

Marcus laughed. "You were already in it. You held Adrian while I cut the hydraulic line."

Charles lunged at him. Detectives forced both men apart.

Evelyn's voice shook. "Why, Charles? He was your nephew."

"He was going to expose us," Charles said. "The foundation would have collapsed. Thousands of people depended on it."

"Thousands of people were your excuse," Ethan replied. "Thirty-two million dollars was your reason."

Marcus pointed at the envelope. "Open it. You are all celebrating a bluff. Julian never had the authorization page."

Nora tore the envelope. It contained blank paper.

Marcus's smile returned.

"A confession obtained by fraud," he said. "A competent lawyer will bury it."

Detective Lena Ortiz stepped from the library. "Not the kidnapping, arson, bribery records, or the original dashcam file already delivered to my office."

Ethan held up Maple's memory card.

Marcus's smile vanished.

Ortiz handcuffed him. "Marcus Vale, you are under arrest."

Charles stared at the floor. "I want immunity."

"You want another locked door," Evelyn said. "For once, you will receive what you earned."

As officers led them away, Marcus turned back.

"You still don't know who told me about the key," he said. "Someone in this house called me before the eighth chime."

Nora looked around the room.

One final betrayal remained.
