Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Shadow

"Don't change your routine," Liam told me over the secure line as dawn broke in pale shades of grey across the city skyline. "If Grant suspects you’re gathering ammunition, he’ll shift the corporate assets offshore before lunch. Play the hurt, confused pregnant wife. Let him think his charm is working."

It was the hardest acting performance of my life.

At seven-thirty, I walked into our sunlit kitchen wearing a soft cashmere robe. The aroma of freshly brewed hazelnut coffee filled the space—Grant’s signature peace offering. He was already dressed in a sharp navy Tom Ford suit, adjusting his platinum cufflinks by the marble island.

When he saw me, his expression softened into a rehearsed mask of gentle concern.

"Morning, sweetheart," he said smoothly, stepping forward to press a kiss to my forehead.

I didn’t flinch, though every nerve in my skin screamed to shove him away. I allowed him to wrap an arm around my waist, keeping my eyes slightly downcast, playing the exact role he expected: the exhausted, insecure expectant mother.

"I made your tea," he murmured, pointing to a steaming mug of peppermint tea. "Look, Charlotte... about last night. I was harsh. The pressure from the upcoming merger with the Vance-Harrington group is running me ragged. Audrey is just an aggressive project manager. She sets up my calendar integrations, and she must have linked the shared accounts automatically."

Lies. Polished, effortless, executive-level lies.

"It just scared me, Grant," I said softly, letting a slight quiver enter my tone. "Seeing another woman's name tied to our baby."

"I know. It was sloppy on my part, and I’m sorry," he replied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was clinical, devoid of real warmth, but laden with the satisfaction of a man who believed he had successfully pacified a child. "I’ve already removed her credentials from my work portal. Let's focus on what matters: the baby shower next week, and our future."

"Of course," I whispered, offering him a fragile, compliant smile. "Have a good day at the office."

The second the private elevator doors closed behind him, the meek expression vanished from my face.

Ten minutes later, I was in a nondescript black sedan parked two blocks away from Liam Vance’s downtown office. I slipped through the private entrance in the back, carrying my laptop and a manila folder filled with our joint financial records.

Liam was waiting in his corner office, surrounded by stacks of financial briefs and digital displays. He didn't offer empty platitudes; he poured me a glass of water, pulled up a chair, and plugged my hard drive into his secure terminal.

"Let’s see what Grant Whitaker is so desperate to hide," Liam said, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard.

For two hours, Liam traced the corporate paper trail behind Audrey Vale. What we discovered turned my blood cold.

Audrey wasn't just a consultant hired through an agency. She was the sole managing partner of an LLC registered in Delaware called Aegis Holdings. And Aegis Holdings had just been quietly written into the bylaws of Grant’s upcoming forty-million-dollar tech merger as the primary beneficiary of his private shares—shares that were supposed to be our marital property.

"He's laundering his equity through her," Liam pointed out, turning the monitor toward me. "If this merger closes before you file for divorce, eighty percent of Grant’s net worth transfers directly into Audrey’s LLC under the guise of intellectual property consulting fees. You’d walk away with scraps, and under standard prenuptial agreements, you wouldn't even have legal standing to touch Aegis."

"And the pregnancy data?" I asked, my voice tightening. "Why was Audrey obsessed with my medical timeline?"

Liam clicked on a folder containing Grant’s trust documents, his jaw hardening as he read the fine print.

"The Whitaker Family Legacy Trust has an acceleration clause," Liam said slowly, looking directly into my eyes. "The patriarch's full inheritance—nearly fifty million dollars—releases to Grant only upon the birth of a living heir, on the condition that Grant has full legal guardianship. If you are deemed medically or psychologically unfit to share custody, the trust awards Grant—and his designated corporate proxy—total control of the estate immediately."

I gripped the edge of the mahogany desk until my knuckles turned white.

Grant hadn't just cheated on me. He wasn't just planning an exit affair.

He was building a legal trap to declare me emotionally unstable using my own private pregnancy journal entries, strip me of our daughter, and hand my child and my family's wealth straight to Audrey Vale.

"He wants a war," I said, a cold, lethal calm washing over the terror. "Then we give him one he won't survive."
