Chapter 5 - The Gala Trap

By the time Thursday arrived, the tension inside the Whitaker penthouse was suffocating, hidden beneath layers of silk, dry martinis, and deceptive smiles.

I stood before the full-length mirror in our master bedroom, adjusting the drape of an emerald-green maternity gown. The color was deliberate—striking, elegant, impossible to overlook. Grant stepped behind me, adjusting his black bow tie. In the reflection, he looked like the golden boy of Manhattan finance: handsome, confident, completely untouched by guilt.

"You look stunning, Charlotte," he murmured, his hands resting on my shoulders. "Are you sure you feel up for tonight? If you're feeling overwhelmed, you could stay home. Rest."

He wants me out of the room so Audrey can stand beside him during the press photos.

I turned and met his gaze with a radiant, serene smile. "Nonsense, darling. It’s the biggest night of your career. I wouldn't miss it for the world."

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was filled with three hundred of the city's most powerful executives, venture capitalists, and socialites. Crystal chandeliers cast fractured light across tables set with white orchids and fine china.

Within ten minutes of our arrival, Audrey Vale appeared at Grant’s side. She wore an understated cream dress, her blonde hair pinned in a sleek chignon, exuding the effortless poise of a woman who believed she had already won everything.

"Charlotte," Audrey greeted me smoothly, her eyes darting over my baby bump with a cold, proprietary assessment. "You're glowing. Grant tells me you’ve been resting well."

"Wonderfully, Audrey," I replied, raising my glass of sparkling cider with absolute calm. "Especially now that I’ve taken complete control of my health and our family's assets."

A microscopic flicker of unease crossed Audrey's features, but Grant chuckled dismissively. "Charlotte’s just excited for the baby shower this weekend. Excuse us, Audrey, I need to introduce Charlotte to the lead partners at Harrington."

For the next two hours, the evening unfolded like clockwork. Grant worked the room, basking in the praise of investors, laughing loudly, drinking vintage champagne.

At nine-thirty, the master of ceremonies took the stage to introduce Grant for the ceremonial signing of the forty-million-dollar Vance-Harrington merger. A spotlight followed Grant as he walked up the stairs, radiating power and arrogance.

Audrey stood near the foot of the stage, a leather portfolio under her arm, waiting to present the final annex documents—the very pages that secretly routed the company's equity into her Delaware shell company.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Grant spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "Tonight marks the beginning of a transformative era for Whitaker Capital. Innovation requires trust, vision, and the right partners."

He smiled down at Audrey, then briefly glanced toward me at the VIP table.

"Before we sign," the lead representative from the regulatory board announced, stepping up with a silver pen, "we must verify the legal sign-off for corporate asset disbursement."

"Everything is already in order," Grant said, reaching for the pen.

The double doors at the back of the ballroom clicked open.

Liam Vance stepped into the hall, flanked by two uniformed federal process servers and a forensic accountant from the state attorney’s office.

The room fell into dead silence.

Grant froze, pen poised inches from the paper. "What is the meaning of this?"

Liam didn’t raise his voice; he simply walked down the center aisle, handing a thick, wax-sealed manila packet directly to the Harrington board members.

"Mr. Whitaker," Liam announced clearly, his voice carrying to every corner of the room. "The New York Supreme Court has issued an immediate freeze on all assets tied to Aegis Holdings and Whitaker Capital under suspicion of multi-state asset hiding and fraudulent conservatorship plotting."

Audrey’s face went chalk-white. She took an instinctive step backward toward the exit, but an investigator was already stationed at the side door.

Grant stared at Liam, then snapped his head toward me in wild disbelief. "Charlotte... what did you do?"

May you like

I stood up slowly from my table, smoothing down my emerald gown, and looked my husband dead in the eye across the sea of stunned investors.

"I removed your access, Grant," I said, my voice cutting through the silence. "To my life, to my daughter, and to everything you ever stole."
