Chapter 4 - The Paper Cage

The air in Liam’s office suddenly felt thin. For months, every tear I had wiped away in secret, every panic attack about preterm labor I had poured into that app's daily journal—it wasn't just private grief. It was evidence being weaponized against me in real time.
Liam pulled up a draft affidavit that had been pre-filled on Grant’s encrypted cloud server. The title made my stomach lurch: Petition for Temporary Sole Custody and Medical Conservatorship due to Maternal Postpartum Instability.
"They were laying the groundwork before our daughter even took her first breath," I whispered, the paper trembling in my hand.
"Look at the dates," Liam pointed at the bottom of the screen. "Every time you logged high blood pressure or anxiety about the merger, Audrey forwarded the logs to Dr. Robert Kline—a high-priced private psychiatrist on Grant’s payroll. Kline has already drafted a preliminary diagnostic profile citing 'borderline psychotic depression with severe paranoia.' If they file this the day you deliver, a judge could grant Grant immediate emergency custody before you even leave the maternity ward."
The sheer cruelty of it knocked the breath from my chest. Grant had sat beside me at dinner every night, cutting my steak, asking if the baby had kicked, while orchestrating a legal execution of my motherhood.
"What do we do?" I asked, looking up at Liam. "If I confront him now, he'll accelerate the merger, liquidate the domestic accounts, and run."
Liam leaned forward, his eyes sharp. "We play his game, but we change the board. Right now, Grant thinks you're completely isolated, compliant, and spiraling. Next Thursday is the Whitaker Gala—the annual investor dinner where he plans to sign the final Vance-Harrington merger contracts. Audrey will be there as his lead strategist. Everyone who matters in this city's financial sector will be in that ballroom."
"You want me to expose him there?"
"Not with screaming or drama," Liam said coolly. "With legal finality. Under New York law, a spouse cannot transfer marital assets into an offshore LLC without written consent if a formal notice of corporate audit is served. If we file a covert injunction on Aegis Holdings forty-eight hours before the gala, Grant’s signature on that merger won't transfer forty million dollars to Audrey. It will trigger a federal investigation for corporate embezzlement."
"And the custody threat?" I placed a hand over my stomach.
"Dr. Kline is dirty," Liam replied, opening a secondary folder. "He lost his license in California ten years ago for fabricating mental health evaluations in contested divorces before changing his legal name and moving east. Grant hired him specifically because he's a mercenary. We expose Kline, and Grant’s custody petition becomes proof of premeditated fraud."

I took a slow, deep breath, feeling my daughter kick against my ribcage. The panic that had gripped me for the last twenty-four hours melted away, replaced by an icy, unbreakable focus.
"Let’s prepare the trap," I told Liam. "Grant Whitaker wanted a compliant wife. I'm going to give him a masterclass in corporate warfare."
