Chapter 2 - The Lion Awakens

The penthouse apartment of Alexander Vance on the forty-second floor of the Museum Tower in downtown Dallas was a fortress of glass, steel, and absolute isolation. By 5:00 AM, the city below was still draped in a pre-dawn stillness, but inside Alexander’s study, the lights blazed like a surgical theater.

Alexander stood before a massive floor-to-ceiling glass wall, staring out at the hazy skyline of a city he practically owned shares in. He hadn't sat down once since arriving at my apartment and transporting Sofia back to his secure tower. He had doctors—private, non-affiliated physicians bound by strict confidentiality agreements and massive retainers—examine Sofia, document every contusion, X-ray her ribs, and administer heavy painkillers before she finally drifted into an exhausted sleep in the master guest suite.

I sat quietly in a leather armchair across the room, watching him. Ten years of separation had aged him; silver ran thick through his dark hair, and deep lines etched the corners of his mouth. But the raw, terrifying power that had made him a legend in corporate takeover battles hadn't faded an inch. If anything, it had sharpened into a lethal edge.

Without turning around, Alexander spoke, his voice dangerously low.

"Javier Robles," he said, tasting the name like something foul on his tongue. "Junior partner at Sterling, Vance & Croft. A firm that owes its primary commercial real estate portfolio to a financing package I personally underwrote eight years ago."

"He watched his mother do it," I said, my voice tight as I gripped a mug of cold tea. "Or at least, he stood outside the door and made sure she didn't mark up her face too badly for the wedding brunch photos."

Alexander slowly turned around. His gray eyes were entirely devoid of emotion, which was always the warning sign that someone was about to be utterly destroyed.

"They wanted the Uptown condo," Alexander said, walking over to his mahogany desk where a thick stack of legal files sat unopened. He picked up a gold-plated Montblanc pen, rolling it between his fingers. "They thought a young bride, isolated from her family and intimidated by a circle of high-society harpies, would fold under physical coercion. They thought they could execute a quiet, forced transfer before the marriage certificate was even filed with the county clerk."

"What are you going to do?" I asked, leaning forward. "File police charges? Carmen has half the district judges in Dallas sitting in her pocket on charity boards."

A cold, humorless smile touched the corner of Alexander’s mouth. "Police charges are for people who want justice, Elena. I don't want justice for what they did to my daughter. I want total, unmitigated annihilation. I want the Robles name erased from the Dallas registry before the stock market opens on Monday morning."

He tapped the screen of his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a single speed-dial number. He didn't use speakerphone, but the absolute authority in his voice carried across the silent room like a whipcrack.

"Marcus," Alexander said smoothly. "Drop whatever you're doing. Wake up the corporate litigation team, the forensic accountants, and the real estate acquisition division. I want every single asset, liability, debt, and offshore holding associated with Carmen Robles, Javier Robles, and Robles Enterprises placed under immediate, aggressive microscopic audit."

There was a brief pause as the voice on the other end stammered in surprise.

"Yes, Marcus, you heard me correctly," Alexander continued, his tone dropping into an arctic chill. "Every commercial lease, every shell company, every trust fund, and every personal line of credit. If they own a square foot of dirt in the state of Texas, I want a lien slapped on it by 8:00 AM. And Marcus?"

He paused, his eyes locking onto mine through the dim light of the study.

"Prepare a complete injunction to freeze Javier’s personal bank accounts, revoke his partnership track at the firm, and initiate an emergency civil suit for extreme battery, extortion, and attempted property theft. Use the maximum statutory damages. I want zero negotiation. I want war."

He clicked the phone dead before the other man could even reply.

I let out a slow, shuddering breath. "Javier thinks he's safe because he's a rising star at his firm. His father, Roberto Robles, built that family name on old-school political intimidation."

"Roberto Robles suffered a massive quadruple bypass three years ago and is currently living off experimental heart medication that costs forty thousand dollars a month," Alexander replied calmly, walking over to the minibar to pour himself two fingers of neat bourbon. "Medication that is entirely imported through a specialty pharmaceutical distributor whose exclusive import license is held by a shell corporation wholly owned by... me."

My eyes widened. "Alexander..."

"They forgot who built this city," he said, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. "They saw Sofia as an easy mark—a wealthy girl with a divorced mother and a distant father. They had no idea that every brick in their precious empire was stacked on a foundation I laid down twenty years ago."

He turned back toward the window as the first pale streaks of dawn began to bleed across the Texas horizon.

"Call the wedding planner, Elena," Alexander said quietly. "Tell them to cancel the brunch. Tell them the wedding is officially annulled on grounds of fraud and physical violence. And then, get some rest."

May you like

He set his glass down with a sharp clack.

"Because at 9:00 AM sharp, Javier Robles is going to walk into his downtown office expecting to bask in the glow of his shiny new wedding and his stolen property. Instead, he’s going to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping bear."
