Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Back in the secure sanctuary of Alexander’s Museum Tower penthouse, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the despair consuming the Robles family.

Sofia sat propped up against a mountain of goose-down pillows in the guest master suite, wearing a soft cashmere robe. The swelling on her cheek had begun to subside into a faint, yellowish bruise, and the split on her lip was healing under the care of a private dermatologist. Though her eyes still carried the haunted shadows of that terrifying night, the paralyzing fear that had gripped her in the hallway of my apartment had finally begun to give way to a quiet, stabilizing strength.

I sat beside her bed, peeling an orange and handing her a wedge.

"How are you holding up, sweetie?" I asked gently.

Sofia took the orange wedge, nibbling on it slowly. "I keep waiting to wake up, Mom. I keep thinking this is all some horrible nightmare and I'm still in that hotel room."

"It's real, sweetheart," I said, squeezing her hand. "And it's almost over."

The heavy oak door of the suite clicked open, and Alexander walked in. He had removed his trench coat, rolling up his sleeves to reveal strong, muscular forearms. He looked tired, but there was an unmistakable spark of victory in his storm-gray eyes.

"How is she?" Alexander asked, walking over to the side of the bed and resting a large, warm hand on Sofia’s shoulder.

"I'm surviving, Dad," Sofia said softly, offering him a faint, tremulous smile. "I heard what happened downstairs. Marcus told me about the bank accounts... and the house."

Alexander’s expression softened instantly—the terrifying corporate titan melting away into a protective, devoted father. "You never have to worry about them again, Sofia. They will never come near you, your condo, or our family ever-more. The Robles empire is officially bankrupt, and Javier is signing his confession as we speak."

Sofia looked down at her hands, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I was so stupid, Dad. I saw the red flags from the beginning, but I wanted so badly to believe he loved me. I didn't want to listen to Mom, and I didn't want to admit I had made a mistake."

"You didn't make a mistake by loving someone, Sofia," Alexander said firmly, lifting her chin with two fingers so she had to look him in the eye. "The only mistake they made was thinking they could break a Vance. And I promise you, by the time the courts finish with them, the Robles name will be a cautionary tale taught in every law school in Texas."

Before either of us could reply, the secure intercom on the bedside table chimed.

Alexander pressed the speaker button. "Report."

"Mr. Vance," Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and urgent. "We have a major development. Carmen Robles just tried to board a private Gulfstream charter out of Love Field bound for the Cayman Islands. She had three duffel bags stuffed with bearer bonds and family jewelry."

A dark, dangerous smile touched the corner of Alexander’s mouth.

"Did she clear customs?" Alexander asked smoothly.

"No, sir," Marcus replied triumphantly. "Federal marshals intercepted her on the tarmac five minutes ago. Her assets are completely cleaned out, and she’s currently sitting in an interrogation room at the federal holding facility downtown."

Alexander clicked the intercom off, turning back to look at us.

"Well," Alexander said quietly, adjusting his cuffs. "It looks like the matriarch is finally ready to talk."
