Chapter 10 - The Baby Was the Lock

Richard Voss was eighty-one years old and dying.

They found him in a private nursing facility outside Boston.

He had advanced heart failure but remained mentally sharp.

When Luca entered, Voss smiled weakly.

“You finally figured it out.”

Luca nearly turned around.

Isabelle remained beside Naomi.

Elena chose not to come.

She had already spent twenty years carrying other people’s secrets.

“Explain the trust,” Naomi said.

Voss looked at Isabelle’s stomach.

“The unborn child is not the target.”

“Then what is?”

“The child is the lock.”

Luca frowned.

“On what?”

“Russo Maritime’s harbor assets.”

Voss struggled to sit higher.

“Your father knew Victor Hale intended to acquire the East Boston land through marriage leverage, debt pressure, or succession.”

“Marriage leverage?”

“Serena.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“Victor financed her education after she became involved with you.”

“What?”

“He recognized opportunity.”

Serena’s relationship with Luca had not begun as a plot.

But Victor Hale discovered it.

Encouraged it.

Funded her graduate training.

Kept contact.

After Luca married Elena, Serena became useful in another way.

“Your father learned part of the plan,” Voss said. “But instead of going to authorities, he built legal traps.”

Naomi’s expression became disgusted.

“He treated his family like chess pieces.”

“Yes.”

“What trap?”

“If Luca had children, control dispersed.”

Luca nodded.

“I know.”

“No. Not completely.”

Voss looked at Isabelle.

“If Luca later had another child with a spouse who was not connected to the original Hale-era agreements, that child’s trust would create a protected minority block for eighteen years.”

Isabelle stared.

“So Serena needed the divorce before birth.”

“Yes.”

“And if she succeeded?”

“Luca could be declared unstable, your marriage dissolved, and the trust amended before the child became a beneficiary.”

Naomi crossed her arms.

“Why would Serena control that?”

“Because Richard Voss’s successor counsel would recommend restructuring.”

Ethan looked up.

“Who is successor counsel?”

Voss smiled sadly.

“My son.”

Naomi immediately understood.

“David Voss.”

David was one of Luca’s current outside attorneys.

He had advised Luca to accept Serena’s family evaluation.

Luca looked physically ill.

“He told me Isabelle needed psychiatric review.”

“Yes.”

“He recommended Serena.”

“Yes.”

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

Luca slammed his hand against the wall.

Isabelle did not flinch.

“Where is David now?”

Ethan checked.

His phone location had gone dark that morning.

Voss closed his eyes.

“Then Serena has reached the final phase.”

“What final phase?”

“Luca’s incapacitation.”

Silence.

Naomi leaned forward.

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“You helped create this.”

“I created the trust. Not the operation.”

“You knew Serena was involved in Elena’s disappearance.”

Voss’s face changed.

“I suspected.”

“And did nothing.”

“Yes.”

Isabelle looked around the room.

Men with power.

Men with law degrees.

Men with companies.

Every one of them had suspected something.

Every one had stayed quiet because speaking threatened money, reputation, or control.

And women paid the price.

Elena lost twenty years.

Isabelle nearly lost her children.

Sophia had been psychologically manipulated.

Michael framed.

Anthony deceived.

Enough.

Isabelle stepped forward.

“Where would David take Luca?”

Everyone looked at her.

Voss whispered:

“Take him?”

“Serena doesn’t need Luca dead.”

Naomi realized it too.

“She needs him legally incompetent.”

“Exactly.”

Isabelle looked at Luca.

“She spent weeks creating psychiatric concerns around me. But the corporate motion also called you unstable.”

Ethan nodded.

“A medical crisis could support emergency guardianship.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“Who becomes guardian?”

Naomi searched the trust documents.

Then stopped.

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

“If Luca becomes incapacitated during an active marital dissolution and before the new child enters the trust, interim control passes to a court-approved corporate guardian.”

“Recommended by counsel,” Isabelle said.

“David Voss.”

The entire plan became visible.

Serena never needed to marry Luca again.

She needed him emotionally compromised.

Isabelle removed.

Children divided.

Elena discredited forever.

Then Luca incapacitated.

Hale-backed attorneys would control the harbor.

It had always looked like romance because romance was the perfect camouflage.

They left the facility immediately.

Halfway back to Boston, Luca’s car stopped at a red light.

His driver handed him a bottle of water.

Luca drank.

Isabelle sat beside him because Naomi’s vehicle was full.

Ten minutes later, Luca rubbed his eyes.

“You okay?” Isabelle asked.

“Tired.”

His speech sounded slightly slow.

Isabelle turned.

“Luca?”

He blinked.

“What?”

Her body went cold.

She grabbed the water bottle.

Seal broken.

“Pull over.”

The driver did not respond.

“Pull over!”

The locks clicked.

Luca’s head dropped against the seat.

Isabelle’s heart exploded into panic.

She reached for her phone.

The driver accelerated.

“Who are you?”

He looked at her through the mirror.

“Mrs. Russo, stay calm.”

“Stop the car.”

Luca tried to lift his head.

“Isabelle…”

She grabbed his hand.

“Stay awake.”

The driver turned onto an unfamiliar road.

Isabelle looked at the partition.

Then remembered the family signal.

One watch adjustment.

One collar touch.

Luca’s fingers moved weakly.

Once over his watch.

Then toward his collar.

He was telling her something.

Not panic.

Act later.

Wait.

Isabelle forced herself to breathe.

The baby kicked.

She slipped her phone between the seat cushions and activated emergency location sharing without looking down.

The driver took them into an underground garage beneath a medical office.

David Voss waited beside the elevator.

Serena stood next to him.

She smiled when Isabelle stepped out.

“This is inconvenient.”

Isabelle looked at Luca, barely conscious.

“You poisoned him.”

“Medicated.”

“You’re insane.”

Serena’s smile disappeared.

“No, Isabelle. That word has been used carelessly enough in this family.”

David took Luca’s arm.

“We need to move.”

Serena looked at Isabelle’s stomach.

“You were never supposed to be here.”

Isabelle stepped between them.

“You want the trust changed.”

Serena studied her.

“You finally understand.”

“You don’t love him.”

A strange sadness crossed Serena’s face.

“I did.”

“Twenty years ago.”

“Yes.”

“And when he chose Elena?”

“Victor showed me love was less useful than leverage.”

Isabelle stared at her.

“You destroyed a woman’s life because a man didn’t choose you.”

“No.”

Serena leaned closer.

“I destroyed Elena because she discovered the transaction.”

“What transaction?”

Serena smiled.

“The one Luca’s father made with Victor Hale.”

Before Isabelle could ask, Luca collapsed.

David shouted for help.

Serena turned.

And that was her mistake.

Isabelle grabbed the metal emergency extinguisher from the wall and smashed it against David’s knee.

He screamed.

She hit the fire alarm.

Sirens exploded through the garage.

Sprinklers activated.

Serena lunged.

Isabelle backed away, protecting her stomach.

Then headlights flooded the garage.

Anthony’s SUV tore through the entrance.

Michael beside him.

Federal vehicles followed.

Sophia had tracked Isabelle’s emergency signal.

Serena stared at the approaching agents.

For the first time, fear replaced control.

She ran.

But Luca, half-conscious on the floor, grabbed her ankle.

Serena fell.

Isabelle looked down at him.

His eyes barely opened.

“Didn’t… choose her.”

Despite everything, Isabelle almost laughed.

“Now is really not the time.”

Agents surrounded Serena.

Handcuffs closed around her wrists.

And as she was dragged upright, she looked at Luca and said:

“You still think your father saved the company.”

Luca stared.

May you like

Serena smiled.

“He sold Elena for it.”
