Chapter 8 - The Choice Luca Never Expected

The emergency board meeting began at noon.

Luca entered the Russo Maritime headquarters with Isabelle on one side and all three children behind him.

Reporters crowded the sidewalk.

The story had leaked.

CEO instability.

Kidnapped former wife.

Custody scandal.

Corporate takeover.

Luca could have entered privately.

Instead, Anthony insisted they use the front entrance.

“Why?” Luca asked.

“Because Serena’s entire strategy depends on making us look divided.”

Sophia took Isabelle’s hand.

“Then let people see us.”

Cameras exploded in flashes.

A reporter shouted:

“Mr. Russo, are your children supporting your removal?”

Another:

“Mrs. Russo, are you still seeking divorce?”

Isabelle kept walking.

Luca did not touch her.

That restraint mattered.

Inside the boardroom, Grant Hale appeared by video.

Silver-haired.

Expensive suit.

Calm smile.

“I regret that personal matters have compromised the company.”

Luca sat.

“You kidnapped Elena.”

Grant’s smile did not move.

“That accusation is defamatory.”

“Good. Sue me.”

The board chairman intervened.

“We are here to discuss governance.”

Grant continued.

“Mr. Russo has demonstrated impaired judgment. His family is in active litigation. His current wife has filed for divorce. His children recently stated they felt unsafe in the home.”

Luca’s face hardened.

There it was.

Serena’s architecture.

Every lie becoming corporate evidence.

Grant looked toward Anthony.

“Mr. Anthony Russo, as the eldest child and substantial beneficiary, perhaps you should address the board.”

Everyone turned.

Anthony stood.

Luca expected him to defend his father.

Instead, Anthony said:

“I support removing Luca Russo from unilateral family control.”

Luca went silent.

Grant smiled.

Isabelle stared at Anthony.

Michael looked shocked.

Sophia whispered:

“What are you doing?”

Anthony continued.

“My father has spent decades making decisions for everyone because he believes power equals protection.”

Luca’s face went gray.

Grant leaned back, satisfied.

“He ignored warnings from our biological mother twenty years ago.”

The boardroom became utterly silent.

“He ignored warnings from Isabelle recently.”

Luca looked down.

“And because of that, our family became vulnerable.”

Grant’s smile widened.

Then Anthony turned toward him.

“That is why my brother, sister, and I are exercising our beneficiary rights today.”

Grant’s smile disappeared.

Anthony placed documents on the table.

“We are transferring our combined family voting proxies.”

The chairman frowned.

“To whom?”

Luca finally looked up.

Anthony answered:

“Isabelle Russo.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Luca stared at his son.

Isabelle did not move.

Grant’s face hardened.

“That is impossible.”

Naomi stood from the observer section.

“It is not.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Under the family trust, adult beneficiaries may appoint a temporary protective voting representative during an active threat to trust assets.”

Grant snapped:

“Mr. Russo is the trustee.”

“Not during a conflict review,” Naomi replied.

Sophia looked at Isabelle.

“We chose Dad at the custody evaluation because Serena forced us.”

Then she looked at Luca.

“But today we choose Isabelle because she’s the only person in this family Serena never successfully controlled.”

Luca’s eyes filled.

That was the choice he never expected.

Not himself.

Not their biological mother.

Not the company.

Isabelle.

The woman he had allowed Serena to isolate.

The woman whose ring remained in his pocket.

Grant stood abruptly on the screen.

“This is theater.”

Isabelle finally spoke.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“This is governance.”

She opened the file Naomi had prepared.

“As temporary proxy holder, I oppose the Hale motion and request immediate suspension of any board member with undisclosed financial ties to Hale Urban Holdings or the Cross Foundation.”

Two directors went pale.

Ethan had found the payments that morning.

Naomi distributed the evidence.

The vote collapsed.

Within twenty minutes, the takeover attempt failed.

Within thirty, two directors resigned.

Within forty, federal agents arrived to interview the board.

Luca remained seated after everyone left.

Isabelle gathered her documents.

“Why did you do it?”

She looked at him.

“Do what?”

“Save my company.”

“I didn’t.”

He frowned.

“I protected our children’s interests.”

The distinction hurt.

But he accepted it.

“You could have taken control.”

“I don’t want your empire.”

“I know.”

“That’s something you should have known before Serena told you otherwise.”

Luca lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Anthony entered.

“We have movement in Maine.”

Everyone turned.

Federal agents had entered the lodge.

No Elena.

No Serena.

But they found medical restraints.

Drug supplies.

Burned documents.

And a satellite phone.

One number had been called repeatedly.

Boston.

The number belonged to a property management office.

Ethan traced the address.

It was less than six miles from where they stood.

A decommissioned private clinic owned through another Hale shell company.

Luca looked at Isabelle.

“She never took Elena out of Boston.”

“No.”

“She sent us north while keeping her nearby.”

Michael whispered:

“Restoration.”

They reached the clinic with federal agents before sunset.

The building had no exterior signage.

Basement doors were reinforced.

One room contained surveillance monitors.

Another contained old patient records.

Then Sophia saw something on a shelf.

A silver necklace.

She screamed.

“That’s it!”

Luca turned.

Sophia grabbed it.

“The necklace Mom gave me!”

Her hands shook.

There was a small pendant attached.

Ethan examined it.

“It opens.”

Inside was not a photograph.

It was a tiny old-fashioned microcassette insert.

A recording medium used decades earlier.

Luca stared.

“Elena gave this to Sophia the night before she disappeared.”

Naomi whispered:

“She was trying to preserve evidence.”

Agents searched deeper.

At the end of the basement corridor, they found a locked room.

Luca stood behind them as the door opened.

A woman was lying on a narrow bed.

Sophia screamed:

“Mom!”

Elena Russo opened her eyes.

For a long moment, she looked at the three adult children standing in the doorway.

Anthony.

Michael.

Sophia.

Her face collapsed.

“My babies?”

Sophia ran to her.

Federal agents tried to stop her.

Elena held out both arms.

Sophia fell against her chest.

Michael followed.

Then Anthony.

Twenty years disappeared inside one embrace.

Luca remained at the doorway.

He could not move.

Elena looked over their shoulders.

Their eyes met.

She whispered:

“You believed her.”

Luca began crying.

“Yes.”

Elena’s voice cracked.

“I told you.”

“I know.”

“You let me disappear.”

He looked like the accusation physically struck him.

“I know.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Then looked past him.

At Isabelle.

“Who are you?”

Isabelle placed one hand over her stomach.

“My name is Isabelle.”

Elena studied the children clinging to her.

Then the way Sophia reached backward for Isabelle’s hand without letting go of her biological mother.

Understanding slowly crossed Elena’s face.

“You raised them.”

Isabelle’s eyes filled.

“I helped.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“You raised my children.”

And for the first time in eleven years, Isabelle understood something she had never allowed herself to want.

Loving Elena’s children had never required replacing her.

There was room for both of them.

But Serena was still missing.

And when agents checked the clinic’s underground garage, they found one empty vehicle space.

The engine heat on the floor suggested a car had left less than ten minutes earlier.

Serena had escaped again.

This time, however, she left behind a message written across the concrete wall.

LUCA STILL DOESN’T KNOW WHO HELPED ME.
