Chapter 9 - The Enemy Inside the Family

Elena spent forty-eight hours under hospital observation.
The drugs in her system were powerful but medically common.
Nothing exotic.
Nothing that immediately proved illegal long-term detention.
Serena had hidden her crimes beneath paperwork.
Transfers.
False diagnoses.
Aliases.
Institutional signatures.
A prison built from documents instead of bars.
Elena remembered only fragments from recent years.
But she remembered the beginning clearly.
Serena had convinced her to attend three therapy sessions.
During the second, Elena disclosed her fears about Luca’s business enemies.
During the third, Serena told her that Luca had privately described her as unstable.
“He never said that,” Luca whispered.
Elena looked at him from the hospital bed.
“I know now.”
Her voice held no warmth.
“At the time, I believed her.”
Luca sat several feet away.
He had not approached unless Elena invited him.
“She showed me messages from you,” Elena continued. “Saying you planned to have me evaluated.”
“They were fake.”
“Yes.”
“She did the same thing to Isabelle.”
Elena looked toward Isabelle.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“You had to survive the same lie.”
Isabelle shook her head.
“I got luckier.”
Elena looked at her children.
“Yes.”
She had survived twenty years.
But lost twenty years.
There was no clean way to celebrate that.
Ethan arrived carrying evidence recovered from the necklace.
The microcassette contained a recording.
Poor quality.
But usable.
They played it.
Elena’s younger voice came first.
“If something happens to me, Serena Vale is involved.”
Luca closed his eyes.
Another voice entered.
Male.
Older.
Victor Hale.
“You’re becoming unreasonable, Elena.”
“You’re trying to steal the harbor.”
“We’re offering your husband a partnership.”
“He refused.”
“He may reconsider.”
“Serena promised you she could control him.”
Silence.
Then Serena’s younger voice.
“I promised nothing.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“You promised yourself Luca.”
The recording crackled.
Victor said:
“This does not need to become ugly.”
“It already is.”
Then Elena’s final sentence:
“If you touch my children, I will destroy both of you.”
The recording ended.
Sophia cried silently.
Anthony stared at the floor.
Luca looked broken.
But Ethan remained focused.
“There’s a problem.”
“What?” Naomi asked.
“The message Serena left says Luca doesn’t know who helped her.”
“Victor Hale.”
“He died eleven years ago.”
“Grant.”
“Maybe.”
Ethan pulled up access records.
“Someone inside the Russo structure has been feeding Serena information continuously.”
Luca looked at Anthony.
“My security director?”
“No.”
“Board member?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Your brother.”
The room went silent.
Luca stared.
“Matteo?”
Matteo Russo lived in Florida.
He had left the family company decades earlier after a bitter dispute with Luca’s father.
He rarely visited.
The children knew him mostly through Christmas calls and expensive gifts.
Luca shook his head.
“No.”
Ethan opened bank transfers.
Payments from Hale-linked entities to consulting companies connected to Matteo.
Twenty years.
Not continuous.
But regular.
Elena whispered:
“I knew someone inside the family helped Victor.”
Luca looked at her.
“You suspected Matteo?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“Your father.”
Luca froze.
“My father?”
“He knew Victor was threatening us.”
“That doesn’t mean he helped.”
“He refused to go to police.”
“Because he didn’t trust police.”
“He told me losing one family member was preferable to losing the company.”
The room became painfully still.
Luca whispered:
“No.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“I never knew whether he meant me.”
Luca stood and walked toward the window.
His father had been dead fourteen years.
A revered businessman.
A ruthless negotiator.
A man Luca had worshiped.
A man who taught him that Russo Maritime came before emotion.
Before weakness.
Before outsiders.
Suddenly the inheritance felt contaminated.
That evening, Matteo Russo arrived unexpectedly in Boston.
He walked into the hospital carrying no coat despite the freezing temperature.
Luca met him in the private waiting area.
“Did you help Serena?”
Matteo stopped.
“Hello to you too.”
“Answer.”
Matteo looked older than Luca remembered.
Tired.
Scared.
“Yes.”
Luca struck him.
Matteo fell against the wall.
Security moved forward.
Luca raised a hand.
“No.”
Matteo touched his bleeding lip.
“I deserve that.”
“Where is Serena?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe you?”
“I stopped helping her years ago.”
Ethan entered.
“Your bank records disagree.”
Matteo looked at him.
“They paid me to stay quiet.”
Luca grabbed his brother’s collar.
“About Elena?”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was alive?”
“Not at first.”
“When?”
“Six years after she disappeared.”
Luca nearly hit him again.
“You knew for fourteen years.”
Matteo’s eyes filled.
“Dad made me.”
“Dad was dead for most of that.”
“I was already trapped.”
“How?”
Matteo looked toward the hospital room where Elena slept.
“Because I drove the car.”
Silence.
Luca released him.
“What car?”
“The night Elena disappeared.”
Luca’s face went white.
Matteo began crying.
“Dad told me Elena was having a breakdown. Serena said she needed emergency treatment somewhere private. I believed them.”
“Where did you take her?”
“A clinic outside Worcester.”
“And when you realized?”
“Dad told me if I talked, Anthony, Michael, and Sophia could become targets too.”
Luca stared at him with pure hatred.
“So you chose silence.”
“Yes.”
“For twenty years.”
“Yes.”
Matteo lowered his head.
“I have no excuse.”
Luca turned away because if he kept looking at his brother, he might kill him.
Isabelle stepped into the waiting area.
“Matteo.”
He looked up.
“Where would Serena go now?”
“I don’t know.”
“Think.”
“She always planned exits.”
“What kind?”
“Properties under people who owe her.”
“Who owes her?”
Matteo hesitated.
“One person.”
“Who?”
He looked at Luca.
“Your father’s old attorney.”
Naomi’s expression changed.
“Richard Voss?”
Matteo nodded.
“He created the original Russo family trusts.”
Isabelle felt cold.
The same trusts Serena’s succession plan depended on.
Naomi immediately called her office.
Ethan opened financial databases.
Luca stared at Matteo.
“What does Voss have to do with Elena?”
Matteo whispered:
“He wrote the commitment papers.”
“And Isabelle?”
Matteo looked toward her stomach.
“He wrote the clause Serena is trying to defeat.”
“The baby’s voting trust?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father knew one day Hale would try again.”
Luca froze.
“My father knew?”
Matteo nodded.
“He wasn’t protecting Serena.”
Everyone stared.
“He was protecting the harbor.”
“And Elena?”
May you like
Matteo’s voice broke.
“He sacrificed her to do it.”
