Chapter 15 - Bright Horizons

The afternoon sun began to sink below the western mountains, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, gold, and deep crimson.
We sat together on the wide porch steps—Daniel, Chloe, Carter, and me—watching the evening light dance across the leaves of the ancient maple trees in our front yard.
Chloe was sitting on the bottom step, happily unboxing her birthday gift from Carter—a high-powered astronomical telescope for viewing the night stars.
"Look, Mom! Dad! Tonight we can see the rings of Saturn!" Chloe cheered, pointing the brass scope toward the darkening sky.
"We certainly can, sweetie," Daniel smiled, leaning back against the wooden porch railing.
He looked over at me, his brown eyes warm and full of unspoken words. He reached out, taking my hand in his, thumb gently stroking my knuckles.
"What are you thinking about, Evie?" he asked softly.
I looked out over our peaceful land, listening to the gentle rustle of the wind through the trees, the distant call of a red-tailed hawk, and the happy laughter of our healthy, safe daughter.
I thought back to that terrible call at 3:17 p.m. in the sterile, fluorescent-lit office room. I thought of the chemical smell in our kitchen, the terrifying chase on the bridge, the cold steel doors of the sub-basement, and the blinding storm on the rooftop helipad.
We had walked through the deepest valley of death and shadow, pushed to the absolute limits of human endurance and fear. But we hadn't broken. We had fought back, stood our ground, and reclaimed our lives from the darkness.
"I was just thinking," I said, a soft, genuine smile spreading across my face as I squeezed Daniel's hand tight, "about how strong a family becomes when they refuse to give up on each other."
"We made it through the storm, Evie," Daniel whispered, pulling me closer and kissing my cheek gently. "The horizon is completely clear now."
As the first bright stars began to glitter in the clear Vermont night sky, Chloe pointed her telescope upward with a squeal of joy.
"I see it! I see the star, Mom!" she called out, turning to look back at us with a beaming face.
I looked at my daughter, then at my husband, feeling a deep, unshakeable warmth fill every corner of my soul.
The nightmare was over. The secrets were buried.
